Uninstall HP Printer Software

Select your operating system from the following options, and then review instructions to uninstall the software.
Important: If you are trying to resolve a specific issue or an error message, removing the software or driver might not resolve the issue. Also, some issues require a more in-depth removal than this document covers. Unless you know that removing the software is the correct solution, search for help documents that pertain to your specific issue or error message.
Click the plus sign () next to your operating system for more information.
Important: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable or Ethernet cable, disconnect the cable from the HP printer now.
The software that comes with your HP printer usually comes packaged with other HP software components. Before you remove the HP software, consider whether you want to remove all of the software or only portions of it.
Use the following guidelines to determine which option to choose when you remove the software.

CAUTION:If you have other HP products, such as another printer or All-in-One, HP does not recommend that you use this software removal option.
Remove software componentsName in HP Uninstaller: Choose which HP printers to uninstallThis option allows you to designate HP software components to remove, but does not remove all of the HP software.

For example, if you want to remove the 'Shop for HP Supplies' item from your desktop, use this option to remove only that component.
The HP Uninstaller is available only if you have the full version of the software installed on your computer. If your software version is 'basic driver only,' proceed to the next method in this document.
  1. Click Start , and then click All Programs .
  2. Click the HP or Hewlett Packard folder, and then click the folder for your printer. The folder is labeled according to the printer series number.
    If there is no folder for your printer, continue to the next method in this document to uninstall the software.
  3. Click Uninstall or Uninstall Software , then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Use the following information to determine which option to choose when you remove the software:
    Uninstall all HP printers associated with this device Select this option if you do not have another HP printer or All-in-One that might be sharing some software.
    Choose which HP printers to uninstall Select this option if another HP printer or All-in-One shares some software, or if you want to remove only certain components that you don't use.
  4. If this method did not uninstall all printerss associated with your device, go to the next method and uninstall through Add or Remove Programs .
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , and then click Control Panel . The Windows Control Panel opens.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs . A list of programs installed on your computer opens.
  3. Click the HP item you want to uninstall, and then click Change/Remove .
    NOTE:You can uninstall only one item at a time.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
  5. Disconnect the printer from the power source, and then restart the computer.
    Important: If you have multiple HP printers installed on your computer, some of the software components could be shared. Use caution if the uninstaller asks whether you want to remove shared files. Other HP printers might not work correctly if you delete certain files. Review the following table of HP software components and descriptions to find out what various software components do.

    HP Solution CenterActs as a centralized point of access for printing tasks and print settings. When you perform a standard installation of the HP software, HP Solution Center installs automatically.

The HP uninstaller might be available on the printer CD, depending on the printer model. If you have the printer CD readily available, try this option to quickly check whether you have the HP Uninstaller, and then run it.
  1. Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer/uninstaller to start.
    NOTE:If it does not start automatically, click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. Click Uninstall , and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Use the following information to determine which option to choose when you remove the software:
    Uninstall all HP printers associated with this device Select this option if you do not have another HP printer or All-in-One that might be sharing some software.
    Choose which HP printers to uninstall Select this option if another HP printer or All-in-One shares some software, or if you want to remove only certain components that you don't use.
  3. If this method did not uninstall all printers associated with your device, go to Method two: Uninstall with Add or Remove Programs .

  4. If this method did not uninstall all printers associated with your device, go to the next method and uninstall through the Windows Control Panel.
Follow these steps to uninstall the software through the Windows Control Panel.
  1. Click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel .
  2. Access the program list:
    • Control Panel Home view: Under Programs , click Uninstall a Program .
    • Classic view: Double-click Programs and Features .
  3. In the list of installed programs, find your HP printer driver. The driver might not be listed by printer name. Look for the printer type, such as Photosmart, Officejet, PSC, or Deskjet. For example:
    • HP Deskjet product Driver Software 9.0
    • HP Photosmart All-in-One Software 8.0
    If your printer does not appear in the list of installed programs, continue to the next method to uninstall the software.
  4. Click the driver, and then click Uninstall . When the process completes, select the option to restart your computer later.
The HP uninstaller might be available on the printer CD, depending on the printer model. If you have the printer CD readily available, try this option to quickly check whether you have the HP uninstaller, and then run it.
  1. Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer/uninstaller to start.
    NOTE:If it does not start automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. Click the Uninstall option, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Use the following information to determine which option to choose when you remove the software:

  1. If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, unplug the USB cable from the HP printer.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then type uninstall in the Search programs and files box.
  3. Click Uninstall a program . A list of programs installed on your computer opens.
  4. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer and then click Uninstall . The HP Uninstaller opens.
    NOTE:If you do not see your printer in this list, the HP Uninstaller is not available for your printer. Try the next method in this document for removing the software.
  5. Select Uninstall all HP printers or Choose which HP printers according to the Common HP Software components and descriptions table below. Then click Next .
    Important: If you have multiple HP printers installed on your computer, some of the software components could be shared. Use caution if the uninstaller asks whether you want to remove shared files. Other HP printers might not work correctly if you delete certain files. Review the following table of HP software components and descriptions to find out what various software components do.
    Common HP Software components and descriptions

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    CAUTION:If you are asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  7. Disconnect the printer from the power source, and then restart the computer.
  8. If this method did not uninstall all printers associated with your device, go to Method two: Uninstall through the Windows Control Panel .
Follow these steps to uninstall the printer software through the Windows Control Panel.
  1. Click the Windows icon (), click Control Panel , and then under "Programs," click Uninstall a program .
  2. Find your HP printer driver in the list of installed programs. If you do not see the printer name, look for the printer type, such as Photosmart, Officejet, PSC, or Deskjet. For example:
    • HP Photosmart C4600 All-in-One Driver software 13.0 Rel .5
    • HP Photosmart All-in-One Software 13.0
    If your printer does not appear in the list of installed programs, continue to the next method to uninstall the software.
  3. Click the driver, click Uninstall/Change , and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Use the following information to determine which option to choose when you remove the software:
    Uninstall all HP printers associated with this device Select this option if you do not have another HP printer or All-in-One that might be sharing some software.
    Choose which HP printers to uninstallSelect this option if another HP printer or All-in-One shares some software, or if you want to remove only certain components that you do not use.
The HP uninstaller program might be available on the printer CD, depending on the printer model. If you have the prrinter CD readily available, try this option to quickly check whether you have the HP Uninstaller, and then run it.
  1. Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer/uninstaller to start.
    NOTE:If it does not start automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
    If the Uninstall option does not appear on the window that displays, continue to the next method to uninstall the software.
  2. Click the Uninstall option, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Use the following information to determine which option to choose when you remove the software:
    Uninstall all HP printers associated with this device Select this option if you do not have another HP printer or All-in-One that might be sharing some software.
    Choose which HP printers to uninstallSelect this option if another HP printer or All-in-One shares some software, or if you want to remove only certain components that you do not use.
  3. If this method did not uninstall all printers associated with your device, go to Method two: Uninstall through the Windows Control Panel .
Follow these steps to remove the print driver from your computer.
NOTE:If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

Step one: Uninstall the Basic Device Software

  1. Perform the following step for your connection type:
    • USB connection : If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the USB cable from the printer, and then disconnect the cable from the computer.
    • Network connection : If the printer is connected to the network through a wired (Ethernet) or wireless connection, disconnect the printer from the network.
      NOTE:If you plan to reinstall the printer software, leave the printer connected to the network.
  2. Right-click the Start button ( ) in the lower left corner of the screen, click Search , and then type Devices and Printers .
  3. Click Devices and Printers .
  4. Right-click the icon for your printer, and then click Remove Device . The computer uninstalls the printer software.

Step two: Uninstall other HP software

Remove any additional software specific to your HP printer through the Windows Uninstall a program feature. Follow these steps to uninstall the software.
Important : If you have multiple HP printers installed on your computer, some of the software components might be shared among them. Use caution if the uninstaller asks if you want to remove shared files. Other HP printers or software programs might not work correctly if you delete certain files.
  1. Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap Programs and Features . The Programs and Features window opens with a list of installed programs.
    NOTE:If you do not see any HP software in the list, there is no further software to remove from your computer.
  2. In the list of programs, click or tap an HP software title, click or tap Uninstall , and then click or tap Yes . Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.
  3. Repeat the preceding step to remove other HP software titles.
  4. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the HP printer, and then unplug the printer's power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Restart the computer.
Follow these steps to remove the print driver and software from a computer with Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5.
  1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD , and then click Applications .
  2. Click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
  3. Double-click the HP Uninstaller , and then click Continue .
  4. Select the printer to uninstall, and then click Uninstall .
  5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password, and then click OK .
  6. From the Macintosh HD menu, click Users .
  7. Click the correct user name.
  8. Click Library .
  9. Click Preferences .
  10. Click and hold the cursor on the first file that starts with "HP," and then drag the file to the Trash icon on the taskbar. Complete this step for each file that starts with "HP."
  11. Close out of Preferences .
  12. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
    NOTE:By clicking OK , all items in your trash will be permanently deleted from your computer. To delete one item in the trash, click that item to highlight it, and then click OK .
Choose the method you originally used to install the printer software, and then follow the steps to remove the print driver and other software from a computer with Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, or 10.8.
    1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD , and then click Applications .
    2. Click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
    3. Double-click the HP Uninstaller , and then click Continue .
    4. Select the printer to uninstall, and then click Uninstall .
    5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password, and then click OK .
    6. From the Macintosh HD menu, click Users .
    7. Click the correct user name.
    8. Click Library .
    9. Click Preferences .
    10. Click and hold the cursor on the first file that starts with "HP," and then drag the file to the Trash icon on the taskbar. Complete this step for each file that starts with "HP."
    11. Close out of Preferences .
    12. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
      NOTE:By clicking OK , all items in your trash will be permanently deleted from your computer. To delete one item in the trash, click that item to highlight it, and then click OK .
    1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD icon.
    2. Double-click the Library folder.
    3. Double-click the Printers folder.
    4. Right-click the HP folder, and then select Move to Trash .
    5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password for the computer, and then click OK . Wait for authentication to complete.
    6. Double-click the PPDs folder.
    7. Double-click the Contents folder.
    8. Double-click the Resources folder.
    9. Locate your printer in the printer list, and then right-click on your printer and select Move to Trash .
    10. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password for the computer, and then click OK . Wait for authentication to complete.
    11. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
      NOTE:By clicking OK , all items in your trash will be permanently deleted from your computer. To delete one item in the trash, click that item to highlight it, and then click OK .
    12. On the upper-left corner of the computer desktop, click the Apple menu icon ( ), and then click System Preferences on the drop-down menu.
    13. Double-click Print & Fax for Mac OS X 10.6, or Print & Scan for OS X 10.7.
    14. In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button ( ) to delete it.
