Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection (Using an Access Point)

Introduction

This document contains instructions to install the product in an existing wireless network that uses an access point , such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your product.
NOTE:You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection.

Important : Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must already be set up. To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your particular access point.

Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

You must have the following items before you install the HP product on the wireless network:
Don't worry if you do not have all of the items yet! The HP Print and Scan Doctor can help you gather some of these items ( ).
  •   Network name: The network name is the SSID
  •   WEP key or WPA security passphrase
  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
    NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor . If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password.

NOTE:The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. This tool is available for all Windows operating systems except Windows RT. The tool is not available for Mac OS operating systems.


Follow these steps to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then locate your network login information.

  1. Click the following link to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  2. Make sure your computer meets the system requirements, and then click Download .
  3. Check to see if the Security Warning dialog box opens, and then click the Plus sign ( ) next to the corresponding option:
      If the Security Warning dialog box opens
      When the Security Warning dialog box opens, choose one of the following methods to download the wizard.
        Method one: Run the utility
        1. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Run .
        2. When the Download Complete dialog box opens, click Run , and then click Run again on the Security Warning dialog box. The Print and Scan Doctor opens.
        Method two: Save the utility
        1. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Save .
        2. When the Save As window opens, browse to your Desktop, and then click Save .
        3. When the download is complete, browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to install the utility. The Print and Scan Doctor opens.
      If the Security Warning dialog box does not open
      1. Click Run in the Notification bar to download the software.
      2. Click Yes in the User Account Control window.
  4. On the Menu bar in the Print and Scan Doctor window, click Network .
  5. Click Show Advanced Info .
  6. Click Show Wireless Info .
  7. Under the Wireless Settings pane, identify the name of your network under SSID , and then identify the Network Key next to it in the list.

Step two: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure the HP product, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  2. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the HP product.
  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

Step three: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software

Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD! You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:
    Install the software with the printer CD
    For a new printer:CD installation is a quick and easy method.
    For an older printer:CD installation might not work if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.

    For example, Windows Vista released in 2007. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Vista.
    About the software:The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release.
    Download and install the software from the HP website
    For a new printer:If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
    For an older printer:Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.

    Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released.
    About the software:The software you can download from the HP website is most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers after the printer and CD release to the market.

Step four: Install the product software

To install the product on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the product wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation will fail.
  1. Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:
    Click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
    If prompted to choose the type of installation, review the following information:
    Recommended typeCustom type
    Recommended , Full , or EasyCustom , Express , or Advanced
    For full use of all your printer features : This installation provides full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.

    HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.    		A custom type of installation might be available for your printer. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons:

    • The computer is low on hard disk space.
    • You attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the recommended installation, fix them before trying a custom installation.)
    The Recommended type of installation allows you to take advantage of all your printer features.
  3. In the Connection Type window that displays, select Wireless network connection (802.11). (not the USB type). The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  4. Click Next .
    NOTE:The installer determines if the computer is connected to a network.
  5. In the Printer Network Connection window that displays, select No (or not sure), my printer is not yet wirelessly connected to my network. Help me to setup the wireless network connection for my printer .
  6. The installer will prompt you to temporarily connect your USB cable in order to configure your wireless network. Connect the USB cable to proceed.
  7. The installer will prompt you to retrieve your network settings from the router. In the Network Setup window that displays, select Yes, access the router .
  8. Confirm and connect to the network using the detected settings.
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step one: Download the software
Many products have more than one driver option on the downloads page. Choices might include a Basic type, and Full Feature type. If both options are available, the following information might help you decide which driver to download.
Basic typeFull Feature type

(Strongly Recommended)
HP does not recommend installing the basic driver unless you have one of the following reasons:

  • You plan to use the All-in-One for printing only.
  • You plan to scan with Microsoft WIA drivers, Twain drivers, or third party scanning software.


The basic driver is smaller and downloads more quickly. However, it does not provide the software needed by most users to copy and fax from the computer, and to use all the scanning features of the product.		For full use of all your product features: This driver provides complete product functionality for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing.

HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product. The software varies by product , but here are some examples:

  • HP Solution Center : This important tool allows you to control settings for printing, copying, and scanning. It also helps you with product maintenance, troubleshooting, software updates, and links to buy supplies.
  • Searchable help files tailored to your product
  • Image-editing software


NOTE: During the Full Feature installation process, you can choose a custom installation, where you select the specific software items that you want to install.
Follow these steps to download the software and driver for your product.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download. If you need help deciding, see the information in the previous table.
  6. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  8. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  9. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    During a Full Feature installation, you choose what type of installation you want. The following information might help you decide which installation type to use.
    Typical (Recommended)Minimum
    For full use of all your printer features : This installation provides full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.

    This type of installation is designed to work for most users.    		A minimum type of installation might be available for your printer. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software.

    Use this type of installation only if the computer is low on hard disk space or you attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (Try to fix any errors before starting a minimum installation.)

    CAUTION:To avoid unintended loss of printer functionality, read the description of each software component carefully during the installation process.
    HP recommends the Typical (Recommended) type of installation to get the most out of your printer.
  4. In the Connection Type window that displays, select the Wireless network connection (802.11). type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  5. Click Next .

  1. Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:
    Click the Windows icon ( ), click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
    If prompted to choose the type of installation, review the following information:

    • The computer is low on hard disk space.
    • You attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the recommended installation, fix them before trying a custom installation.)
    The Recommended type of installation allows you to take advantage of all your printer features.
    NOTE:The installer determines the computer's network configuration.
  3. In the Printer Network Connection window that displays, select No (or not sure), my printer is not yet wirelessly connected to my network. Help me to setup the wireless network connection for my printer .
  4. The installer will prompt you to temporarily connect your USB cable in order to configure your wireless network. Connect the USB cable to proceed.
  5. The installer will prompt you to retrieve your network settings from the router. In the Network Setup window that displays, select Yes, access the router , and then click Next .
  6. Confirm and connect to the network using the detected settings.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.
Step one: Download the software
Many products have more than one driver option on the downloads page. Choices might include a Basic type, and Full Feature type. If both options are available, the following information might help you decide which driver to download.
Basic typeFull Feature type

(Strongly Recommended)
HP does not recommend installing the basic driver unless you have one of the following reasons:

  • You plan to use the All-in-One for printing only.
  • You plan to scan with Microsoft WIA drivers, Twain drivers, or third party scanning software.


The basic driver is smaller and downloads more quickly. However, it does not provide the software needed by most users to copy and fax from the computer, and to use all the scanning features of the product.		For full use of all your product features: This driver provides complete product functionality for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing.

HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product. The software varies by product , but here are some examples:

  • HP Solution Center : This important tool allows you to control settings for printing, copying, and scanning. It also helps you with product maintenance, troubleshooting, software updates, and links to buy supplies.
  • Searchable help files tailored to your product
  • Image-editing software


NOTE: During the Full Feature installation process, you can choose a custom installation, where you select the specific software items that you want to install.
Follow these steps to download the software and driver for your product.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download. If you need help deciding, see the information in the previous table.
  6. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  8. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  9. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    During a Full Feature installation, you choose what type of installation you want. The following information might help you decide which installation type to use.
    Typical (Recommended)Minimum
    For full use of all your printer features : This installation provides full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.

    This type of installation is designed to work for most users.    		A minimum type of installation might be available for your printer. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software.

    Use this type of installation only if the computer is low on hard disk space or you attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (Try to fix any errors before starting a minimum installation.)

    CAUTION:To avoid unintended loss of printer functionality, read the description of each software component carefully during the installation process.
    HP recommends the Typical (Recommended) type of installation to get the most out of your printer.
  4. In the Connection Type window that displays, select the Wireless network connection (802.11). type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  5. Click Next .
    NOTE:The installer determines if the computer is connected to a network.
  6. In the Printer Network Connection window that displays, select No (or not sure), my printer is not yet wirelessly connected to my network. Help me to setup the wireless network connection for my printer .
  7. The installer will prompt you to temporarily connect your USB cable in order to configure your wireless network. Connect the USB cable to proceed.
  8. The installer will prompt you to retrieve your network settings from the router. In the Network Setup window that displays, select Yes, access the router , and then click Next .
  9. Confirm and connect to the network using the detected settings.
  10. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

You must have the following items before you install the HP printer on the wireless network:
Don't worry if you do not have all of the items yet! The HP Print and Scan Doctor can help you gather some of these items ( ).
  •   Network name: The network name is the SSID
  •   WEP key or WPA security passphrase
  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
    NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor . If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password.

NOTE:The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. This tool is available for all Windows operating systems except Windows RT. The tool is not available for Mac OS operating systems.


Follow these steps to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then locate your network login information.

Step two: Prepare for installation

Follow these steps to prepare the printer for installation on the wireless network.

  2. Close all applications running on your computer.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that connects to the HP printer.
  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.

Step three: Download the software from the HP website

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the printer on.

Select an option to install the software, and then follow the instructions to install the software.
Installing with the product CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.
Important : If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work . Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads to install the latest product software for the newer operating system.
The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.

HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • Your wireless network uses a router that does not support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
  • The updated full-feature HP software is not immediately available on the HP Software and Drivers page after the public release of a new operating system
  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP printer released
Important : You must have a router that supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to install the software with Apple Software Updates. If you do not have a WPS router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.
Apple Software Update is a quick and easy software download method available directly through the Mac OS operating system.
You do not need to download a driver from HP Software & Driver Downloads if you install using Apple Software Update. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.
NOTE:If your printer supports scanning, the software that you use to scan might be different than the software you used before upgrading your operating system. Depending on your printer driver update, you can use Preview , Image Capture , or the Scan icon from the print queue to scan.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • You no longer have the software CD that shipped with your printer
  • The updated full-feature HP software for the new version of Mac OS is not immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page
  • You updated Mac OS to a new version that released after your printer released
  • You are doing a first time install of a new version Mac OS on a new Mac
  • You already installed HP software on a Mac running an earlier version of Mac OS and have updated to a new version of Mac OS
Step three: Download and install the software
The software CD that shipped with your printer is not supported in Lion. Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP printer over the same network.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
Follow these steps to download and install the software from the HP website. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE: Updated full-feature HP software might not be immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page after the public release of a new operating system.   6. When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK .
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
  8. When prompted to select a connection type, select Configure your device for a wireless network , and then click Continue .
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the product on the wireless network.
Important : The printer must already be connected to the wireless network to download and install the software.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Scan .
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign ( ) to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ( ).
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add .
  6. Click Install , and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
    NOTE:If the printer was not added to the queue, click the plus sign ( ), select your HP printer, and then click Add .
NOTE:You must have a Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)-enabled router to connect the printer to the wireless network. If you do not have this type of router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.
Step one: Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup
Use the push button or PIN method to connect the printer to the wireless network.
Push button
  1. On the control panel Home screen, touch the button next to Scan .
  2. Touch the button next to Wireless Menu .
  3. Touch the button next to WPS .
  4. Touch the button next to Push Button .
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to press the WPS button on the router.
  5. Press the WPS button on the router. The printer connects to the network.
  6. Touch OK on the printer control panel.
PIN
  1. On the control panel Home screen, touch the button next to Scan .
  2. Touch the button next to Wireless Menu .
  3. Touch the button next to WPS .
  4. Touch the button next to PIN . The PIN displays on the control panel.
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to enter the WPS PIN.
  5. Enter the PIN on the router.
  6. Touch Start . The printer displays a PIN.
  7. Touch OK on the printer control panel.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to download the current software from Apple Software Updates.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences . The System Preferences window opens.
  2. Click Print & Scan . The Print & Scan window opens.
  3. Click the plus sign ( ). The name of your printer displays.
  4. Click Add Printer or Scanner .
  5. Select your printer, and then click Add .
  6. Click Install , and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
    NOTE:If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign ( ), select your printer, and then click Add .
Follow these steps to change an existing connection type to a wireless connection using Bonjour.
NOTE:The printer software must be installed, and the printer must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Scan .
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign ( ) to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ( ).
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add .

  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the steps in the option to change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection.
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these steps to install your printer on a wireless network.
Step one: Prepare for installation
To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the router, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.
NOTE:Depending on your installation method, you might need to connect a USB cable to the printer and the computer. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 ft) long.
  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin.
    • Network setup : Before you can install the product, your wireless network must already be set up. (To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your router or access point.)
      If you set up device filtering on your access point and need to find your printer's IP or MAC address, see Additional Information at the end of this document.
    • Your wireless-capable HP printer : Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
    • Network name : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • Password : WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name (SSID) and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connected to the network.
  3. Exit all applications running on your computer.
Step two: Decide how to install the software
Select an option to install the software.
Adding a network-connected printer to the queue is a quick and easy software download method using Apple Software Updates.
You do not need to download a driver from the HP Software & Driver Downloads page if you use Apple Software Updates. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • Your wireless network uses a router that does not support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
  • The updated full-feature HP software is not available on the HP Software and Drivers page after the public release of a new operating system
  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP printer released
Important : You must have a router that supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to install the software with Apple Software Updates. If you do not have a WPS router, install the software using the other method in this document.
Apple Software Update is a quick and easy software download method available directly through the Mac OS operating system.
You do not need to download a driver from HP Software & Driver Downloads if you install using Apple Software Update. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.
NOTE:If your printer supports scanning, the software that you use to scan might be different than the software you used before upgrading your operating system. Depending on your printer driver update, you can use Preview , Image Capture , or the Scan icon from the print queue to scan.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • You no longer have the software CD that shipped with your printer
  • The updated full-feature HP software for the new version of Mac OS is not immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page
  • You updated Mac OS to a new version that released after your printer released
  • You are doing a first time install of a new version Mac OS on a new Mac
  • You already installed HP software on a Mac running an earlier version of Mac OS and have updated to a new version of Mac OS
Step three: Install the software
The software CD that shipped with your printer does not support Mountain Lion. Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP printer over the same network.
Important : The printer must already be connected to the wireless network to download and install the software.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Scan .
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign ( ) to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ( ).
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add .
  6. Click Install , and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
    NOTE:If the printer was not added to the queue, click the plus sign ( ), select your HP printer, and then click Add .
The OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion driver for your printer is available through Apple Software Update (ASU). Follow these steps in the order presented to install the printer software on your computer with a network connection using ASU.
NOTE:You must have a Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)-enabled router to connect the printer to the wireless network. If you do not have this type of router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.
Step one: Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup
Use the push button or PIN method to connect the printer to the wireless network.
Push button
  1. On the control panel Home screen, touch the button next to Scan .
  2. Touch the button next to Wireless Menu .
  3. Touch the button next to WPS .
  4. Touch the button next to Push Button .
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to press the WPS button on the router.
  5. Press the WPS button on the router. The printer connects to the network.
  6. Touch OK on the printer control panel.
PIN
  1. On the control panel Home screen, touch the button next to Scan .
  2. Touch the button next to Wireless Menu .
  3. Touch the button next to WPS .
  4. Touch the button next to PIN . The PIN displays on the control panel.
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to enter the WPS PIN.
  5. Enter the PIN on the router.
  6. Touch Start . The printer displays a PIN.
  7. Touch OK on the printer control panel.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to download the current software from Apple Software Update.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences . The System Preferences window opens.
  2. Click Print & Scan . The Print & Scan window opens.
  3. Click the plus sign ( ). The name of your printer displays.
  4. Click Add Printer or Scanner .
  5. Select your printer, and then click Add .
  6. Click Install , and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
    NOTE:If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign ( ), select your printer, and then click Add .
Follow these steps to change an existing connection type to a wireless connection using Bonjour.
NOTE:The printer software must be installed, and the printer must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Scan .
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign ( ) to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ( ).
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add .
