Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection

  • PrintPrint

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
NOTE:If you have not already set up your printer, click here for instructions to set up the printer hardware , and then return to this document to set up your printer on a wireless network.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network:

    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional: If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.

  3. Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.

Step two: Decide how to install the software

Review the following sections, and then decide how to install the software.
Adding a network-connected printer to the queue is a quick and easy software download method using Apple Software Update.
You do not need to download a driver from the HP Software & Driver Downloads page if you use Apple Software Update. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • Your wireless network uses a router that does not support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your printer released
Important: You must have a router that supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to install the software with Apple Software Update.
