Installing the Printer Software on a Wireless Network

Introduction

This document contains instructions to install the product in an existing wireless network that uses an access point, such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your product.
NOTE:You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network:
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional: If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

Follow these steps to download and install the software.
NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

Step three: Connect your printer to the wireless network

Use the option that applies to your installation screen.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the USB wireless setup option.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.

Step two: Connect your printer to the wireless network
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Follow these steps to connect your printer to a wireless network using a USB cable.

Follow these steps in the order presented for the Windows 8 operating system.
NOTE:If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Follow these steps for Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.
NOTE:HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website. Apple Software Update installations do not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.
  • If you have not already installed your printer, follow the steps in 'Wireless installation'.
  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these instructions.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • WEP key or WPA security passphrase
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network.
    • Internet access. HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.
    • Your wireless-capable HP product. Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation).
    • Administrator privileges or password
  2. Make sure the product, access point, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connecting to the wireless network.
  3. Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.

Step two: Download and install the software

To install the HP printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.
Follow these steps to change the connection type with Bonjour.
NOTE:The printer software or the in-OS driver must be installed, and the printer must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Fax.
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ().
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.
Follow these steps for OS X v10.7 Lion.
NOTE:To install the printer software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website or from Apple Software Updates. The printer CD is not supported in Lion.
  • If you have not already installed your printer, follow the steps in 'Wireless installation'.
  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these steps to install your printer on a wireless network.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Turn on the printer, access point, and computer.
  2. Connect your computer to the wireless network.
  3. Click the appropriate installation option:

Step two: Download and install the software

The software CD that shipped with your printer is not supported in Lion. Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that uses the HP printer over the same network.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
NOTE:You must have a WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)-enabled router to connect the printer to the wireless network. If you do not have this type of router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.
Step one: Connect to the wireless network using WiFi Protected Setup
Use the push button or PIN to connect the printer to the network.
Push button
  1. On the printer control panel Home screen, touch the right arrow () to view more options.
  2. Touch Setup ().
  3. Touch Network.
  4. Touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
  5. Touch Push Button.
  6. Touch Start.
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to press the WPS button on the router.
  7. Press the WPS button on the router. The printer connects to the network.
PIN
  1. On the printer control panel Home screen, touch the right arrow () to view more options.
  2. Touch Setup ().
  3. Touch Network.
  4. Touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
  5. Touch PIN.
  6. Touch Start. The printer displays a PIN.
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to enter the WPS PIN.
  7. Enter the PIN on the router.
Step two: Download and install the software
Follow these steps to download and install the current software from Apple Software Updates.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences. The System Preferences window opens.
  2. Click Print & Scan. The Print & Scan window opens.
  3. Click the plus sign (). The name of your printer displays.
  4. Click Add Printer or Scanner.
  5. Select your printer, and then click Add.
  6. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
    NOTE:If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (), select your printer, and then click Add.
Important: The printer must already be connected to the wireless network to download and install the software.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Scan.
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ().
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.
  6. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the printers list.
    NOTE:If the printer was not added to the printers list, Click the plus sign (), select your HP printer, and then click Add.
Follow these steps to change an existing connection type to a wireless connection using Bonjour.
NOTE:The printer software must be installed, and the printer must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Scan.
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ().
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.
Follow these steps for OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion or OS X v10.9 Mavericks.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original product CD or from the HP website.
  • If you have not already installed your printer, follow the steps in 'Wireless installation'.
  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these steps to install your printer on a wireless network.

Step one: Prepare for installation

To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network using WiFi Protected Setup

Use the push button or PIN to connect the printer to the network.
Push button
  1. On the printer control panel Home screen, touch the right arrow () to view more options.
  2. Touch Setup ().
  3. Touch Network.
  4. Touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
  5. Touch Push Button.
  6. Touch Start.
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to press the WPS button on the router.
  7. Press the WPS button on the router. The printer connects to the network.
PIN
  1. On the printer control panel Home screen, touch the right arrow () to view more options.
  2. Touch Setup ().
  3. Touch Network.
  4. Touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
  5. Touch PIN.
  6. Touch Start. The printer displays a PIN.
    NOTE:The printer begins a timer that lasts approximately two minutes to allow time to enter the WPS PIN.
  7. Enter the PIN on the router.

Step three: Download and install the software

Follow these steps to download and install the current software from Apple Software Updates.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion or OS X v10.9 Mavericks. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click Software Update. Software Update checks for available updates and updates the database that your computer uses to determine available printer software.
  2. Click Show Details, select any available software updates, and then click Install.
    NOTE: Install all available software updates for best printer performance and functionality.
  3. Turn on the printer, and then make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
  4. Make sure that the printer is connected to the wired or wireless network, or is connected to the USB port of a Time Capsule or AirPort Base Station.
  5. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
  6. Click Print & Scan, and then click the plus sign () in the lower left corner of the window.
  7. Under Nearby Printers, click the name of your printer.
    NOTE:If your printer is not listed, click Add Printer or Scanner for a full list of printers.
  8. Under Name, click the name of your printer.
    NOTE:Make sure that the printer kind is Bonjour or Bonjour Multifunction.
  9. Click the Use box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu.
  10. Click Add to add the printer to the queue.
  11. If you are prompted to install any additional software for your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
    NOTE: Quit and restart any applications that were open before adding the printer to use the updated HP software features.
Follow these steps to change an existing connection type to a wireless connection using Bonjour.
NOTE:The printer software must be installed, and the printer must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Scan.
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ().
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.
