Fatal Error 'Error 1327, Invalid Drive: [Drive letter]:\, installation ended prematurely because of an error' (MSI Error 1327) Message Displays During Software Installation in Windows

  • PrintPrint

Issue

During installation of the HP software, the error message 'Error 1327, Invalid Drive: [Drive letter]:\, installation ended prematurely because of an error' displays on the computer.
The Microsoft Installer program generates this error. It occurs because the CD or DVD drive letter is different than the original drive letter. For example, the letter for your CD or DVD drive might change after you install or remove a second hard disk or external drive. So, the drive letter that that the Windows registry recognizes is no longer valid.
Choose your Windows operating system from the following options, and then follow the solutions and steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Reset removable drives

If you have any removable or portable disk drives attached the computer, disconnect and then reconnect each one. Then try the installation again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Uninstall and reinstall the HP software

Follow these steps to uninstall any partially installed software, copy the software to the hard drive, and then reinstall it.

Step one: Uninstall the HP software

HP installs an uninstall utility with the print driver to simplify the uninstall process. This uninstall utility removes the product driver, not the additional software that installed with the driver.
Follow these steps to uninstall the software. Even if the software installation failed, portions of the software might be on your computer.
NOTE:If the Install Wizard is still open, click Exit or Cancel to stop the installation.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the product to the computer.
  2. Open the uninstaller:
    • Click Start, click All Programs, point to HP, and then click the folder for the product, which is labeled according to the product series number.
If there is not a folder for your product, discontinue the steps in this procedure and try one of the other methods for uninstalling the software.
  3. Click Uninstall or Uninstall Software. The software uninstaller opens in a command prompt window.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.
CAUTION:If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.

Step two: Copy the software to the hard drive and reinstall

NOTE:If you do not have the software CD, skip to the next solution to download and install the software.

Solution three: Download and install the software from the Web

The software and driver downloads available from the HP Web site might include a basic driver option and a Full Feature Software and Driver option. The basic driver is sufficient to perform basic printing functions with your product. The Full Feature option installs extra software to allow full use of all features available with the product. The Full Feature option also allows you to do a custom installation.
Follow these steps to download the software from the HP Web site, and then install the software on your computer.
  1. Turn on the printer.
