Using Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Edition

This document pertains to HP and Compaq notebook computers with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Edition.
Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Edition includes Microsoft Word Starter and Excel Starter, simplified versions of Word and Excel. Office Starter does not include PowerPoint, OneNote, or Outlook. Purchase Microsoft Office to activate the full-featured software.
Follow these steps to install Office Starter:
  1. Click Start , All Programs , and then click Microsoft Office 2010 .
  2. Click Use .

  3. Click Open .
    Word Starter opens.
Follow these steps to purchase a product key for the full version of Office 2010. If you already have a product key, see the Activating the full version of Office 2010 section of this document.
  1. Click Start , All Programs , and then click Microsoft Office 2010 .
  2. Click Purchase .

    A Web browser opens to a Microsoft Web page where you can purchase the full version of Office 2010.
    You can also open the Web page by clicking Purchase on the Home tab of Excel Starter or Word Starter.

     Excel Starter
If you purchased an Office 2010 product key online, you can activate the full version by following these steps. If you do not have a product key, but would like to purchase one, see the Purchasing the full version of Office 2010 section of this document.
  1. Click Start , All Programs , and then click Microsoft Office 2010 .
  2. Click Activate .

  3. Click OK on the window that displays.
  4. Enter the product key, and then click Continue .

After installing Office Starter, follow these steps to open and use Word Starter:
  1. Open Word Starter by clicking Start , All Programs , Microsoft Office Starter , then clicking Microsoft Word Starter 2010 .
  2. If prompted, enter your name and initial, and then click OK .

  3. If prompted, accept the Microsoft Office license agreement.

  4. If prompted, select the way that Microsoft Office installs updates, and then click OK .

  5. Use Word Starter to write and edit Word documents.

This section lists a few of the features available in the full version of Microsoft Word that are not fully supported in Word Starter. For a complete list with details, visit the Microsoft web site and search for information on "Getting started with Office Starter."
  • Table of contents/Table of figures/Index —You can view but not create these items.
  • Comments —You can format or edit existing comments, but cannot create or delete comments.
  • Track changes —You can view changes, but cannot accept or reject the changes.
  • Protection —You cannot turn protection on or off.
  • Bookmarks —You can use existing bookmarks, but cannot create them.
After installing Office Starter, follow these steps to open and use Excel Starter:
  1. To open Excel Starter, click Start , All Programs , Microsoft Office Starter , then click Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 .
  2. If prompted, enter your name and initial, and then click OK .

  4. If prompted, select the way that Microsoft Office installs updates, and then click OK .

  5. Use Excel Starter to create and edit Excel spreadsheets.

  • Column and row headings —You can show or hide but cannot create headings.
  • Comments —You can format or edit existing comments, but cannot create or delete comments.
  • Freeze panes —You cannot freeze or unfreeze panes.
  • Data table —You cannot create data tables.

Clip Organizer enables you to store clip art, photos, videos, and other media for use in documents, presentations, and spreadsheets.

Microsoft Office Upload Center manages uploads of Microsoft Office files to Web servers.

Microsoft Picture Manager enables you to view, manage, edit, and share pictures stored on the computer.

Microsoft Office Starter To-Go Device Manager places the Microsoft Office Starter programs on a USB flash drive. You can use this flash drive to run Microsoft Office Starter on any computer using Microsoft Windows Vista or later.
NOTE:The computer must be connected to the Internet for Office Starter To-Go Device Manager to download the required files.
Follow these steps to place Office Starter on a USB flash drive:
  1. Connect a USB flash drive to a USB port on the computer.
  2. Click Start , All Programs , Microsoft Office Starter , Microsoft Office 2010 Tools , and then click Microsoft Office Starter To-Go Device Manager .

  3. Click Start .
    The Office Starter Device Manager downloads program files.

  4. When the Office Starter Device Manager finishes downloading the files, select the USB flash drive where you want to save Office Starter, then click Install .

  5. When the installation is complete, click Create Another Device to install Office Starter onto another USB flash drive, or click Close to finish.

  6. To open Office Starter on a different computer, connect the USB flash drive, navigate to the drive in Windows Explorer, then click Office Starter .
