HP Solution Center Software Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

This document is for HP Solution Center software, HP inkjet printers manufactured in 2010 and earlier, and Windows computers.
HP Solution Center is a Windows software program for HP Printers. It came with many HP printers manufactured prior to 2011. With it, you can perform many printer related tasks such as scanning an image, ordering supplies, checking ink levels, and more. This document contains answers to the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center.

When you install the full feature printer software on your Windows computer, either from the product CD or from the HP website, HP Solution Center installed automatically and should be available. Use one of the following methods to check for and open Solution Center.
Click the Solution Center icon on the desktop to open the software. Depending on your version, the icon might be black or blue.

Search Windows for your printer: If the icon is not on the desktop, search Windows for your printer model name, then click your printer in the list of results to open Solution Center.
  • If you cannot find Solution Center, download and install the full feature driver for your printer on your computer.
  • If HP Printer Assistant opens, you have a printer that released after 2010 that no longer supports Solution Center. Printer Assistant replaced Solution Center and provides similar printer settings and management features.
You will not find a software download link for Solution Center from HP because it is part of your printer’s full feature software solution. Install HP Solution Center with the Windows full feature software from HP’s website, or use the Printer Install Wizard.
NOTE:HP Solution Center is not available for Mac computers. The Mac print driver installs HP Utility, which has similar tools and features.
The HP Printer Install Wizard automatically finds the best available print driver for your HP Printer. It is available only for Windows 10, 8, and 7. Download and run Printer Install Wizard a free tool from HP. When this link is clicked, HP Printer Install Wizard is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.
Download the latest full feature software from the HP website to install HP Solution Center.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver.
  5. Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided driver download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.
  6. During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer. If you choose a Minimum installation, read the description of each software component carefully to avoid unintended loss of printer functionality.
After upgrading Windows to a newer version, such as Windows 8 or 10, Solution Center is missing or an error displays when you try opening the software.
Read the following sections to resolve issues.
NOTE:After completing the Windows upgrade, make sure to restart your printer and computer at least once before attempting to print or scan.
After you upgrade Windows, HP Solution Center either fails to open, opens with an error message, opens to a blank window or partial window, or the links within HP Solution Center fail to function.
Uninstall then reinstall the full-feature Windows software from the HP website to resolve the issue.

Step 1: Uninstall the HP printer software

Remove all HP printing software from the computer before reinstalling the latest driver.
  1. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  2. Search Windows for uninstall a program, and then click the Uninstall a program Control Panel setting in the list of results.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes to confirm the uninstall.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
  5. Restart the computer.

Step 2: Reinstall the latest driver from the HP website

Reinstall the full feature driver available from the HP website to restore HP Solution Center functions.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver.
  5. Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided driver download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.
  6. During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer. If you choose a Minimum installation, read the description of each software component carefully to avoid unintended loss of printer functionality.
When you try opening HP Solution Center software after upgrading from Windows 7 to 10, a HP Solution Center cannot run because your device installation is not complete message displays. In some cases, Solution Center opens without the error, but when you click Scan Picture or Scan Document, a Scan is busy or is in use message displays.
To resolve the issue, confirm the network settings are correct, and reinstall the HP driver and software.

Step 1: Change the network type to 'Private'

If your private network is not set as Private, printer functions might not work correctly if the printer is connected to a wired (Ethernet) wireless network.
  1. Search Windows for network, and click Network and Sharing Center in the list of results.
  2. In the list of your active networks, check if your network is set to Public or Private.
    • If the network is set as Private if you are connected to a private home or business network, skip to the step to uninstall the HP printer software .
    • If the network is set as Public if you are connected to a private home or business network, continue to the next step.
  3. Click HomeGroup in the lower left corner of the window.
  4. Click Change network location.
  5. Click Yes to change the network type to Private.

Step 2: Uninstall the HP printer software

Remove all HP printing software from the computer before reinstalling the latest driver.
  1. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  2. Search Windows for uninstall a program, and then click the Uninstall a program Control Panel setting in the list of results.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes to confirm the uninstall.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
  5. Restart the computer.

Step 3: Reinstall the latest driver from the HP website

Reinstall the full feature driver available from the HP website to restore HP Solution Center functions.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver.
  5. Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided driver download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.
  6. During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer. If you choose a Minimum installation, read the description of each software component carefully to avoid unintended loss of printer functionality.
This issue is for computers and printers upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Windows regularly scans your computer and displays issues or updates, including recommendations to Disable applications to improve performance. If you disable hpwuSchd Application and HP Digital Imaging Monitor from the Startup tab in Task Manager, the following functions fail:
  • Cannot scan or fax from Solution Center
  • Device status messaging stops displaying
  • Automatic 'Add device' feature fails when you reconnect a previously installed printer
Re-enable the HP startup programs to resolve the issue.
  1. Search Windows for task manager, click the Task Manager app in the list of results, click More details, and click the Startup tab.
  2. Right click hpwuSchd Application, and click Start service.
  3. Right click HP Digital Imaging Monitor, and click Start service.
After upgrading a USB-connected printer from Windows 7 32-bit to Windows 10, an Access is denied error displays when you change settings in HP Solution Center. The setting does change successfully, but to remove the message, uninstall and reinstall the HP software.

Step 1: Uninstall the HP printer software

  1. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  2. Search Windows for uninstall a program, and then click the Uninstall a program Control Panel setting in the list of results.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes to confirm the uninstall.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
  5. Restart the computer.

Step 2: Reinstall the latest driver from the HP website

Reinstall with a driver available from the HP website to restore scanning functions.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver.
  5. Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided driver download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.
  6. During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer. If you choose a Minimum installation, read the description of each software component carefully to avoid unintended loss of printer functionality.
Troubleshoot scanning issues with the Print and Scan Doctor, then try reinstalling the driver if the issue persists.
Go to Scan with a scanning app for other scanning options in Windows.

Step 1: Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.
  • If you can scan, the issue is resolved.
  • If you cannot scan, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Uninstall any HP printer software

Uninstall the HP print driver and software that might cause the scanning issue.
  1. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  2. Search Windows for uninstall a program, and then click the Uninstall a program Control Panel setting in the list of results.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes to confirm the uninstall.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
  5. Restart the computer.

Step 3: Reinstall the latest driver from the HP website

Reinstall with the full feature driver available from the HP website to restore scanning functions.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver.
  5. Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided driver download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.
  6. During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer. If you choose a Minimum installation, read the description of each software component carefully to avoid unintended loss of printer functionality.

Step 4: Restart the computer and the printer

Restart the computer and your printer after reinstalling the driver to finish setting up the software in Windows.
  1. Press the power button on the printer to turn it off.
  2. Close all running programs on your computer, then restart your computer.
  3. Turn on the printer.
  4. Try to scan.
    • If you can scan, the issue is resolved.
    • If you cannot scan, continue to the next step.

Step 5: Scan with a scanning app

If you can’t scan from the HP software but you can print, use one of the following methods to scan from the computer in Windows.
  • HP Scan and Capture app (Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 only): Free from the Microsoft Store, scan photos or documents using your printer or the camera on your computer or mobile device.
    Go to Installing and Using HP Scan and Capture App (Windows 10) for more information and to see if your printer is supported.
  • Windows Scan app (Windows 10 only): Use this pre-installed app to scan from most HP all-in-one printers.
    Search Windows for Scan and click the Scan app in the list of results.
  • Windows Fax and Scan (Windows XP and later): Scan photos and documents with this tool available in Windows XP and later.
    Search Windows for fax, click Windows Fax and Scan in the list of results, then click New Scan.
HP Solution Center is not available for Mac OS X. The Mac full feature driver installs HP Utility, which has similar tools and features.
HP Printer Assistant replaced HP Solution Center for printers in 2011 and later. HP Printer Assistant installs with the full feature print driver and provides similar functionality to HP Solution Center.
