Blinking Lights

Introduction

The lights on the control panel indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking, depending on the status of the product. The lights can all blink in distinct patterns to indicate the product status or potential error conditions.
NOTE:This document describes the light patterns on your product as blinking or flashing lights. In this document, "flashing" means the same as "blinking."

Blinking lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
NOTE:There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.
Issue: All lights off
Show all | Hide all
All the lights are off. The product is in Auto-Off mode or is turned off.
Press the Power button ( ) to deactivate the Auto-Off mode or to turn on the product.
Issue: Attention and Ready lights cycle
The Attention and Ready lights cycle during the formatter initialization period or when the product is processing a cleaning page.
No action is required. Wait for the initialization period to end. The product should enter the ready state when the initialization period is finished.
Issue: Ready light on
The product is in the ready state.
No action is required. The product is ready to receive a print job.
Issue: Ready light blinking
The product is receiving or processing data.
No action is required. The product is receiving or processing a print job.
Issue: Attention light blinking
The product has experienced an error that can be corrected at the product, such as packing that remains inside the product, an open door, no paper in the proper tray, a missing print cartridge, or a paper jam.
Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Check to make sure that there is no packing material inside of the product

Follow the steps below to remove any packing material that might be inside your product.
  1. Open the print cartridge door.

  2. Remove the print cartridge packing material.

  3. Remove the print cartridge from the product.

    CAUTION:To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end.
  4. Remove the packing material from inside the product.

  5. Remove the orange clip from the end of the print cartridge.

  6. Gently rock the print cartridge back and forth to distribute the toner evenly.

  7. Bend the tab on the left side of the print cartridge until the tab breaks loose, and then pull the tab to remove all the sealing tape from the print cartridge.

    CAUTION:If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into the fabric .
  8. Insert the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Solution two: Make sure that the print cartridge door is closed

Follow these steps to open and close the print cartridge door.
  1. Open the print cartridge door.

Solution three: Check to see if there is paper loaded in the product

There might not be paper loaded in the product. If there is no paper loaded in the product, follow the method for the tray you want to load.
CAUTION:If you try to print on paper that is wrinkled, folded, or damaged in any way, a jam might occur.
The priority feed slot holds up to 10 sheets of paper or one envelope, one transparency, or one sheet of labels or cardstock.
  1. Slide the paper guides to their outermost positions.
  2. Insert the paper into the priority feed slot.
    Load the paper top first and print-side up.
  3. Slide the paper guides inwards to the edges of the paper.
The input tray holds 150 pages of 75 g/m2 paper, or fewer sheets of heavier paper (a 15 mm stack height or less).
  1. Slide the paper guides to their outermost positions.
  2. Remove any paper from the input tray.
  3. Tap the sides of the paper stack to straighten the edges.
  4. Insert the paper into the input tray.
    Load the paper, top first and print-side up.
  5. Slide the paper guides inwards to the edges of the paper.

Solution four: Check to see if the print cartridge is installed

There might not be a print cartridge installed in the product. If there is no print cartridge installed in the product, follow these steps to install the print cartridge.
  1. Open the print cartridge door.

  2. Remove the new print cartridge from its package. Place the used print cartridge in the bag and box for recycling.

    CAUTION:To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end. Do not touch the cartridge shutter or the roller surface.
  3. Grasp both sides of the print cartridge and gently rock the print cartridge to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

  4. Bend the tab on the left side of the cartridge until the tab breaks loose, and then pull the tab until all the tape is removed from the cartridge. Place the tab and tape in the print cartridge box to return for recycling.

  5. Insert the print cartridge in the product, and then close the print cartridge door.

    CAUTION:If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into the fabric .

Solution five: Check to see if there is a paper jam

Follow these steps to locate, and then clear a paper jam.
NOTE:When clearing jams, be careful not to tear jammed paper. If a small piece of paper remains in the product, it could cause additional jams

Step one: Locate the jam

Jams can occur at the following locations in the product, and can occur in more than one location.

Step two: Clear a jam from the input tray

Follow these steps to clear a jam from the input tray.
CAUTION:Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams. Damage caused by sharp objects will not be covered by the warranty.When removing jammed paper, pull the jammed paper straight away from the product. Pulling jammed paper out of the product at an angle can damage the product.
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and then remove the print cartridge.

  2. Remove the paper stack from the input tray.

  3. With both hands, grasp the side of the jammed paper that is most visible (this includes the middle), and carefully pull it free from the product.

  4. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Step three: Clear a jam from the output areas

Follow these steps to clear a jam from the output areas.
CAUTION:Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams. Damage caused by sharp objects will not be covered by the warranty.
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and then remove the print cartridge.

  2. Keep the print cartridge door open, and then with both hands, grasp the side of the jammed paper that is most visible (this includes the middle), and then carefully pull it free from the product.
  3. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Step four: Clear a jam from inside the product

Follow these steps to clear a jam from inside the product.
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and then remove the print cartridge.

    CAUTION:To prevent damage, do not expose the print cartridge to light. Cover it with a piece of paper.
  2. If you can see the jammed paper, carefully grasp the jammed paper, and then slowly pull it out of the product.

  3. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Issue: Attention light blinking and Ready light on
No action is required. The product has experienced a continual error from which it should recover on its own and complete the job.
If the recovery is unsuccessful, the product continues to the continuable error state. There might be paper jammed inside the product.
Follow these steps to locate, and then clear a paper jam.
NOTE:When clearing jams, be careful not to tear jammed paper. If a small piece of paper remains in the product, it could cause additional jams

Step one: Locate the jam

  4. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Step three: Clear a jam from the output areas

Follow these steps to clear a jam from the output areas.

  1. Open the print cartridge door, and then remove the print cartridge.

  3. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Step four: Clear a jam from inside the product

Follow these steps to clear a jam from inside the product.
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and then remove the print cartridge.

    CAUTION:To prevent damage, do not expose the print cartridge to light. Cover it with a piece of paper.
  2. If you can see the jammed paper, carefully grasp the jammed paper, and then slowly pull it out of the product.

  3. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Issue: Attention and Ready lights on
The product has experienced a fatal error from which it cannot recover. Follow the steps below to restart the product.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product, and then wait 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  4. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
If these steps did not resolve the issue, go to the Service the Product section at the end of this document.
Issue: Wireless light blinking (P1102w model only)
The product is attempting to locate a wireless network.
No action is required.
Issue: Wireless light on (P1102w model only)
The product is connected to a wireless network.
No action is required.
Issue: Wireless light off (P1102w model only)
The product is not connected to a network, and the wireless unit in the product might be turned off.
Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Try to connect to the network

Step one: Connect to the network

Press the wireless button to try connecting to the network, or run the Wireless Configuration utility to configure the product. To verify that the product finds the network, print a configuration page. The product should have an IP address assigned to it.

Step two: Print a configuration page

To verify that the product finds a network, print a configuration page.
  1. Make sure that the Ready light ( ) is on and that the product is idle and silent.
  2. Press and hold the Cancel button ( ), and release it when the Ready light ( ) begins blinking.
    The Configuration page prints.

Solution two: Uninstall, and then reinstall the software

If the product remains unable to connect to the network, uninstall and then reinstall the product.

Step one: Uninstall the software

Step two: Reinstall the software

Reinstall the product software. For detailed instructions, click the link for your computer operating system and type of connection.

Step three: Contact a network administrator

If the issue persists, contact your network administrator or refer to the user manual of the wireless router or access point.

Service the product

If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
