A 'Paper jam
' error message displays on the control panel. The Attention light (
) blinks.
) blinks.
NOTE:Paper jam messages can be true or false. The product might report a paper jam when there is no paper jam. The following steps resolve both true and false paper jam messages.
Paper jams can occur in multiple locations in the product.
The following recommendations help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.
- Do not overfill the input tray.
- When you load new paper in the input tray, remove any paper that is already in the input tray, tap the stack of new paper on a flat surface to align the edges, and then load the new paper.
- Adjust the paper width and length guides snugly against the paper.
- Make sure that the input tray is securely in place.
- Do not add or remove paper to or from the input tray while the product is printing.
- Do not fan the paper before loading. Fanning causes static electricity, which makes the pages stick together.
- Use only HP-recommended paper types and sizes.
- Do not let paper stack up in the output tray. The paper type and the amount of toner used affect the output tray capacity.
- Do not open the print cartridge door during a print job.
- Make sure that the power cord is firmly connected to both the product and the power supply.
- Do not print on paper that is damaged or has foreign objects attached to it, such as staples or paper clips.
- Store the paper flat in its moisture proof wrapping in an environment that is not too humid or too dry.
When the Jam Recovery feature is turned on, the product reprints any pages that are damaged during a jam.
Follow these steps to turn on the Jam Recovery feature.
- Open ToolboxFX.Click Start , click All Programs , click HP , click your product, and then click HP ToolboxFX .Click the Windows icon (

- Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

You must follow these solutions in the order presented
to resolve the issue. 
CAUTION:Paper jams might result in loose toner on the page. If you get any toner on your clothes, wash them in cold water. Hot water permanently sets the toner into the fabric
.Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams. Damage caused by sharp objects is not covered by the warranty.When you remove jammed paper, pull it straight out of the product. Pulling out jammed paper at an angle can damage the product.
Step one: Remove any loose paper first

CAUTION:Do not try to remove jammed paper at this stage.
Step two: Clear the jam
Follow these steps to clear the jam from the product area indicated in the control panel error message.
- If you can see jammed paper in Tray 1, remove the jammed paper by pulling it straight out. Grasp the paper with both hands where it is most visible, including the middle.
CAUTION:Do not pull up on the jammed paper. Be sure to pull it straight out. - If you cannot see the jammed paper, open the Tray 1 door, and then pull out Tray 2.
- Push down the two tabs located on either side of Tray 1 to lower it.
- Remove the jammed paper by pulling it straight out from Tray 1. Grasp the paper with both hands where it is most visible, including the middle.
CAUTION:Do not pull up on the jammed paper. Be sure to pull it straight out. - Push up the two tabs to raise Tray 1. Make sure that the tray clicks into place.
- Close the Tray 1 door, and then insert Tray 2 all the way into the product.
- Press OK to continue printing.
- Open the Tray 1 door and pull out Tray 2.
- Remove the jammed paper by pulling it straight out from Tray 2. Grasp the paper with both hands where it is most visible, including the middle.
CAUTION:Do not pull up on the jammed paper. Be sure to pull it straight out. - Close the Tray 1 door, and then insert Tray 2 all the way into the product.
- Press OK to continue printing.
- Open the rear door to access the fuser.
- With both hands, grasp the paper where it is most visible, including the middle, and then carefully pull the paper straight out of the fuser.
CAUTION:Do not pull up on the jammed paper. Be sure to pull it straight out. - Close the rear door.
- With both hands, grasp the paper where it is most visible, including the middle. Carefully pull the paper straight out of the output tray.
CAUTION:Do not pull up on the jammed paper. Be sure to pull it straight out. - Open, and then close, the rear door to clear the paper jam error message.
Step three: Print a configuration report
Print a configuration report to test the product hardware.
- Load plain white paper into Tray 2.
- On the product control panel, press OK , and then press OK again to select Reports .
- Press the Right Arrow button (
) to scroll to and select Config Report
. - Press OK to print the configuration report.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Reset the printer, check the print settings, and print a configuration report
Step one: Reset the printer
- Press the Power switch to turn off the product.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Press the Power switch to turn on the product.
Step two: Check print settings
Follow these steps to check and adjust print settings to match the loaded paper.

NOTE:The steps can vary depending on the software program.
- From the File menu in the software program, click Print .
- In the Print dialog box, click Properties .
- Check the settings on the Paper/Quality tab, change them if necessary, and then click OK .
- Try printing again.
Step three: Print a configuration report
Printing a configuration report verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
- Load plain white paper into Tray 2.
- On the product control panel, press OK , and then press OK again to select Reports .
- Press the Right Arrow button (
) to scroll to and select Config Report
. - Press OK to print the configuration report.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can accumulate inside the product and might cause paper jams. Follow these steps to print a cleaning page and a configuration report.
Step one: Print a cleaning page
- On the product control panel, press OK .
- Press the Right Arrow button (
) to scroll to and select Service
, and then press OK
. - Press the Right Arrow button (
) to scroll to and select Cleaning Page
. - Press OK to begin the cleaning process.The product processes a single page, and then returns to the Ready state when the cleaning process ends.
Step two: Print a configuration report
Printing a configuration report verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
- Load plain white paper into Tray 2.
- On the product control panel, press OK , and then press OK again to select Reports .
- Press the Right Arrow button (
) to scroll to and select Config Report
. - Press OK to print the configuration report.
Solution four: Service the printer
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
