Introduction
The lights on the product control panel indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking, depending on the status of the product. The lights can all blink in distinct patterns to indicate the product status or potential error conditions.

NOTE:This document describes the light patterns on your product as blinking or flashing lights. In this document, "flashing" means the same as "blinking."

Blinking lights
The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

NOTE:There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.
All the lights are off. The product is in the Auto-on/Auto-Off mode or is turned off.
Press the Power button (
) to deactivate the Auto-on/Auto-Off mode or to turn on the product.
) to deactivate the Auto-on/Auto-Off mode or to turn on the product. The status lights cycle during the formatter initialization (startup) period or when the product processes a cleaning page.
No action is required. Wait for the initialization period to end. The product enters ready state when the initialization period finishes.
The product is receiving or processing data.
No action is required. The product is receiving or processing a print job.
The product is in manual-feed mode, or it is waiting to print the
second side of a duplex print
job.
Solution one: Load paper
When manual feed mode is turned on, load the paper one sheet at a time.
- Slide the paper length and paper width guides to their outermost positions.
- Load the sheet of paper in the input tray. Slide the paper forward until it stops.
- Slide the paper length and paper width guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.
- Press the Resume button (
) to finish the print job.
Solution two: Print the second side of a duplex print job
After the first side of your duplex print job prints, follow these steps.
- Follow the instructions on the computer screen before placing the output stack in the input tray to print the other side.
- Remove any paper that is left in tray 1.
- Retrieve the printed stack from the output tray. Maintain the paper orientation, and then load the stack into the input tray.
- Press the Resume button (
) to finish the print job.
The input tray is empty or there is a paper jam.
Solution one: Load paper

- Slide the paper length and width guides to their outermost positions.
- Load plain white paper in the input tray. Slide the paper forward until it stops.
NOTE:Do not overload the tray. Make sure that the stack of paper fits within the tray and is no higher than the top of the guides. - Slide the paper length and width guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.
Solution two: Clear a paper jam

CAUTION:Paper jams might result in loose toner on the page. If you get any toner on your clothes, wash them in cold water. Hot water permanently sets the toner into the fabric
.Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams. Damage caused by sharp objects is not covered by the warranty.When you remove jammed paper, pull it straight out of the product. Pulling jammed paper out at an angle can damage the product.

Step one: Remove any loose paper first
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the
print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the jam from the output tray
With both hands, grasp the visible edge of the jammed paper. Carefully pull the paper straight out of the output tray.
Step three: Clear the jam from the back of the printer
- Turn the product around, and then open the rear door.
- With both hands, grasp the visible edge of the jammed paper. Carefully pull the paper straight out of the output tray.
- Close the rear door.
Step four: Clear the jam from the input tray
Step five: Reset the product
Open and close the print cartridge door to
reset the product.

NOTE:Loose toner might remain in the product after a jam. This problem typically resolves itself after the product prints a few sheets.
Step six: Reload plain paper
- Slide the paper length and width guides to their outermost positions.
- Load plain white paper in the input tray. Slide the paper forward until it stops.
NOTE:Do not overload the tray. Make sure that the stack of paper fits within the tray and is no higher than the top of the guides. - Slide the paper length and width guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.
Step seven: Print a self-test report
Follow these steps to print a self-test report to test the product hardware.
- Make sure that the product is idle and the Ready light (
) is on. - Press and hold the Resume button (
) for two to three seconds, and then release the button. The product prints a self-test report and a supplies status page.
The product has experienced a fatal error from which it cannot recover. Follow the steps below to restart the product.
If the error persists, contact HP customer support.
Solution one: Reset the printer
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Wait for the product to start up before proceeding.
Solution two: Service the printer
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

There is a paper jam. Follow these steps to clear the jam.

Step seven: Print a self-test report
Follow these steps to print a self-test report to test the product hardware.
- Make sure that the product is idle and the Ready light (
) is on. - Press and hold the Resume button (
) for two to three seconds, and then release the button. The product prints a self-test report and a supplies status page.
This blinking lights pattern indicates one of the following conditions:
- The print cartridge has rotated and is now accessible.
- A print cartridge is missing or is incorrectly installed.
Solution one: Access the indicated print cartridge
Solution two: Make sure that all print cartridges are installed correctly
- Close the print cartridge and rear doors, if they are not already closed.
- Open the print cartridge door.
- Grasp the handle on the print cartridge, and then pull the print cartridge straight out to remove it.
- Remove any protective tape from the print cartridge.
- Grasp both sides of the print cartridge, and then gently rock the print cartridge to distribute the toner evenly inside.Figure 29: Gently rock the print cartridge

- Grasp the print cartridge by the center handle, and then insert the print cartridge into the correct slot.
Tip: Make sure that the color label on the print cartridge matches the color label in the carousel slot. - Close the print cartridge door.When you close the print cartridge door, the control panel lights flash. Allow time for the product to calibrate before proceeding.
This blinking lights pattern indicates one of the following conditions:
- A print cartridge is rotating.
- A non-HP print cartridge is in use.
- A print cartridge (supply) is very low and has reached the end of its estimated useful life. When the supply has reached this condition, the HP Premium Protection warranty for that supply has ended.
Solution one: Wait for the print cartridge to stop rotating
Wait for the
rotation period to end and the product
returns to its previous state.
Solution two: Resume printing
Press the Resume button (
) to continue printing. You do not need to replace the print cartridge unless print quality is no longer acceptable.

CAUTION:If toner gets on any clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water.
Hot water sets toner into the fabric.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Close the print cartridge and rear doors, if they are not already closed.
- On the control panel, press the Print Cartridge button (
) that corresponds to the print cartridge you want to replace. The product makes noises while the print cartridge carousel rotates.
CAUTION:Wait until the Print Cartridge light (
) stops flashing and the rotation sounds stop
before proceeding to the next step. - Open the print cartridge door.
- Grasp the handle on the print cartridge and then pull the print cartridge straight out to remove it. Put the old print cartridge aside.
- Remove the new print cartridge from the packaging.
- Place the old print cartridge in the bag and box for recycling.
- Grasp both sides of the new print cartridge, and then gently rock the print cartridge to distribute the toner evenly inside.
CAUTION:To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end. Do not touch the roller on the print cartridge. - Remove the protective tape from the new print cartridge. Put the tab in the print cartridge box to return for recycling.
- Remove the protective shielding from the new print cartridge.
- Grasp the print cartridge by the center handle, and then insert the print cartridge into the correct slot.
Tip: Make sure that the color label on the print cartridge matches the color label in the carousel slot. - Close the print cartridge door.When you close the print cartridge door, the Print Cartridge, Ready, and Attention lights flash. Allow up to three minutes for the product to calibrate.
- Repeat these steps for each print cartridge that you want to replace. Make sure you reinsert each print cartridge in its correct slot on the carousel.
This blinking lights pattern indicates one of the following conditions:
- A non-HP print cartridge in use and is very low.
- A print cartridge (supply) is very low and has reached the end of its estimated useful life. When the supply has reached this condition, the HP Premium Protection warranty for that supply has ended.
Solution one: Resume printing
Press the Resume button (
) to continue printing. You do not need to replace the print cartridge unless print quality is no longer acceptable.
