Setting Up an HP Product to Print on a Bluetooth Network in Windows 7

Introduction

Use the information provided in this document to set up and configure your HP product for Bluetooth wireless printing.
NOTE:Only basic print functions are available for Bluetooth installations. Card readers, scanners, and other advanced functions will not work over a Bluetooth network.

About Bluetooth : Bluetooth wireless technology allows you to wirelessly connect to your HP product using radio waves in the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
Bluetooth is typically used for short distances (up to 10 meters [30 feet]) and does not require a direct line of sight between the sending device and the receiving device.

Before you begin

Before you set your HP product up for Bluetooth wireless printing, you must first make sure that your computer is Bluetooth compatible, and that Bluetooth is enabled on your computer.
Bluetooth compatibility and settings vary by computer manufacturer. Consult the manufacturer of your computer for specific details, but here are some general guidelines that might help you determine if your computer is ready.
  • Look for a Bluetooth icon ( ) in the lower right corner of the computer (the notification area).
  • Most notebook computers have a switch or button on the exterior that sends power to the Bluetooth and wireless network devices. A wireless indicator light ( ) usually glows to indicate that the Bluetooth device is on.
  • If you are using a Bluetooth accessory to make a non-Bluetooth compatible computer Bluetooth compatible, make sure that the accessory itself is installed and ready.

Set up Bluetooth printing in Windows 7

Follow these steps in the order given to set up your HP product for Bluetooth printing in Windows 7.

Step one: Install the basic print driver

If you are unsure whether the print driver is installed, click the Windows icon ( ), click Control Panel , click Hardware and Sound , and then click Printers . Look for your HP product.
  • If the driver is already installed , skip to the next step: "Enable Bluetooth on the computer".
  • If the driver is not installed , choose one of these methods, and then follow the steps to install the basic print driver for Windows 7.
When you connect the product to the computer via a USB connection, Windows 7 detects the hardware, and then automatically installs the correct driver. Windows 7 displays a notification when the installation begins and when the installation is complete.
NOTE:Some products might not have a Windows 7 driver available yet. If this method does not automatically load the driver, continue to the other driver installation method: "Download and install the basic HP print driver for Windows 7".
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the rear of the HP product.

  3. Connect the USB cable to the computer.
    If you are connected to the internet, Windows Update searches online for the most recent product driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows 7, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver.
    The Windows Update process takes place automatically. Therefore, you might not notice that the driver is installing.
  4. After the driver is installed, a window displays at the bottom of the screen: Your devices are ready to use .
    • If the window displays and does not close automatically, click Close ( ), to close the window.
    • If nothing happens or an error message displays , continue to the next method: "Download and install the basic HP print driver for Windows 7".
  5. Optional : If you plan to only print with your HP product on the Bluetooth network, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the HP product and the computer.
If the driver is already installed, skip to the next step: "Enable Bluetooth on the computer".
Follow these steps to download and install the basic HP print driver for Windows 7.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you connected the cable).

  2. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  4. If prompted, type your HP product number, and then click Next . You might also need to click your model in a list of similar HP products.
  5. Select Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit) or Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit) , and then click Next .
    To determine which version of Windows 7 you have, click the Windows icon ( ), right-click Computer , and then click Properties . Under System , view the system type.
  6. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver .
  7. Click the driver that you want to download.
    NOTE:There is not a specific driver for Bluetooth, and the driver for a USB connection works for Bluetooth. HP recommends the basic print driver, and not the full-feature software.
  8. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  9. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  10. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  11. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer. Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
  12. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  13. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then open the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then open the file.
  14. Accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  15. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    NOTE:Because the product is not connected to the computer, the installation's communication test will fail. Since you are installing the product on a Bluetooth network, skip through any warning messages.

Step two: Enable Bluetooth on the computer

Follow these steps to enable Bluetooth on the computer.
Most notebook computers have a switch or button on the exterior that sends power to the Bluetooth and wireless network devices. A wireless indicator light ( ) usually glows to indicate that Bluetooth is on.
  1. On the computer desktop, look for the Bluetooth icon ( ) in the notification area, at the far right of the task bar.
    If the icon is not showing, click the Up Arrow to display the hidden icons.

    If the icon is still not showing, refer to the computer's user guide or help system to ensure that the computer has Bluetooth, and then read how to enable Bluetooth.
  2. When the Bluetooth icon is available, right-click the icon ( ) and click Open Settings .
  3. Click Options , and then ensure there is an X in the box enabling Bluetooth devices to connect to the computer.
  4. Click Apply , and then click OK .

Step three: Enable Bluetooth on the HP product

Follow these steps to enable Bluetooth on the product.
NOTE:The instructions vary by product, but these steps include the various methods to enable Bluetooth.
  1. On the front of the HP product, verify that the Bluetooth light ( ) is on.
    If the light is on and not blinking skip to the next step: "Add the HP product to your Bluetooth network".
  2. On the front panel of the product, locate the Setup function.
  3. Press the Setup button ( ) or touch the Setup icon ( ) to access the product’s Setup menu.
  4. Scroll to, and then touch Bluetooth , or press OK with Bluetooth highlighted.
  5. In the Bluetooth menu, enable Bluetooth Radio .
  6. In the Bluetooth menu, set the Visibility function to Visible to All .

Step four: Add the HP product to your Bluetooth network

Follow these steps to add the product to your Bluetooth network.
  1. Click the Bluetooth icon ( ) in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.
  2. Select Add a Device .
  3. If the computer displays a prompt for device type, choose Printers and click Next . The computer displays a list of all Bluetooth devices that are in range.
  4. Select your HP product from the list, and then click Next . The Select pairing screen appears.
  5. Select Enter the device's pairing code (called Passkey on HP products).
  6. Enter the pairing code for the HP product. The default code is 0000 , but if you created a different code, use your code instead.
  7. Click Next . The product installs on the Bluetooth network.
  8. Complete the on-screen instructions.

Step five: Print a document using Bluetooth

Follow these steps to print using the Bluetooth network.
  1. Open the software application from which you want to print, such as Microsoft Word.
  2. Open the document that you want to print.
  3. Select File , and then Print .
  4. In the Select Printer section of the Print dialog box, select the HP Photosmart or All-in-one Bluetooth printer.
    NOTE:Your HP product displays with the letters BT at the end of the name.
  5. Select Print .
