Battery Charging Delayed When Operating Notebook in High Ambient Temperatures
This issue affects all Notebook models with Lithium Ion batteries.
If the notebook is operating near the HP ambient operating specification of 35 degrees Celsius, the battery may be delayed in charging. More specifically, if the battery is discharged and the AC adapter is connected, the battery may not charge again until the internal temperature of the battery becomes lower.
Connect the Notebook to the AC Adapter
To resolve this issue, keep the notebook connected to the AC adapter and when the battery's internal temperature has dropped below 45 degrees Celsius, charging will resume normally.
It is normal for battery internal temperatures to rise during discharge. The battery's internal temperature does not increase when charging, therefore once cooled only external heat sources may interrupt charging.
Charging the battery
Attempting to charge the battery in conditions outside of the suggested operational temperature range on the product specifications is not recommended.
Please note the following charging conditions:
- At 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), the battery does not charge.
- From 1 degree Celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), the battery charges very slowly. This is a natural limitation of battery cell technology.
- At 45 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit), battery charging stops. Once the battery cools to a temperature below this threshold, charging resumes.
NOTE:Battery cells do not accumulate heat during the charging process. As such, charging the battery does not cause the battery to exceed the temperature threshold. Battery cells only accumulate heat during the discharge process (using battery power and not AC power.)
