Setting Up the Product (Hardware)

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer. If you already set up the product hardware, and need software installation help, see Links to Software Installation Instructions at the end of this document.
This document includes the following steps to set up the product:
  • Check the contents of the box
  • Unpack the product
  • Connect the power cord
  • Load plain paper
  • Install the cartridges
  • Align the cartridges
If you have not already set up the hardware, first follow the steps in this document to do so.
If you have already installed the hardware, and are just looking for the driver to download, go to HP Software and Driver Downloads .

Setting up the printer

Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the product software.
CAUTION:Do NOT connect the USB cable now. If you need a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.

Step one: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step two: Unpack the printer

Remove all packing tape and protective film from outside and inside the product.

Step three: Connect the power cord

  1. Connect the power supply to the rear of product.
  2. Plug the power cord into the power supply.
  3. Plug the power cord into a grounded wall outlet.

Step four: Load plain paper

Follow these steps to load the paper.

The following video demonstrates how to load paper.
  1. Lift the access cover.
  2. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
  3. Lift the paper tray.
    NOTE:Do not use torn or wrinkled paper, paper on a roll, or paper that is clipped or stapled.
  4. Tap a stack of plain, white, unused paper on a hard surface to align the edges.
  5. Load the stack of paper print-side up into the tray, and then adjust the paper width guide so it fits snugly against the side of the paper.

Step five: Install the cartridges

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
  2. Open the front access cover. Wait until the cartridge carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
    CAUTION:Only install cartridges when the cartridge carriage stops moving.

  3. Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then pull the pink tab to remove the protective tape.
    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper contacts on the back of the cartridge or the ink nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge. Touching the contacts or the nozzles might damage the cartridge.

  4. Lift open the cartridge latch, and then insert the cartridge at a slight angle into the cartridge slot.
    NOTE:Place the tri-color cartridge in the left slot, and the black or photo cartridge in the right slot.
  5. Close the cartridge latch. Press the latch down to make sure that it rests flat on the cartridge.

  6. Close the access cover, and then allow the cartridge initialization process to complete before you continue.

    Once installed, the cartridges start to initialize. The carriage stops moving once the initialization process completes.

Step six: Align the cartridges

Whenever you install a new cartridge, align the cartridges for the best possible print quality.
NOTE:Make sure to load unused, plain, white paper into the paper tray before you align the ink cartridges. An alignment page prints during the alignment process.
Select your operating system, and then follow the instructions to align the cartridges.
    1. Click Start ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click HP Officejet 100 (L411) Mobile Printer Series , and then click Toolbox . The Toolbox opens.
    2. Click the Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges .
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.

    2. Click the Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges .

    2. Click the Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges .
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.
    1. Double-click the HP Utility icon in the Dock. The HP Utility opens.
    2. If more than one product is listed in the utility, click your product under Printers .
    3. Click Align .
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.

Links to software installation instructions

After you complete the previous setup steps, you can install the product software with the product CD or by downloading the software from the HP Web site. For instructions, click the link for your computer operating system and type of connection.
