HP Compaq nc4010 Notebook PC Troubleshooting

HP offered Windows 7 upgrades for qualifying HP and Compaq notebook computers purchased between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010. This program expired on March 1, 2010. The HP Upgrade to Windows 7 disc is no longer available
.
Upgrading to a retail version of Windows 7 on an HP notebook PC that is under warranty voids the software portion of that warranty. The software portion of the warranty only covers the original software and operating system that shipped with the notebook. It does not cover software modifications made after purchase. The hardware warranty is valid for the specified warranty period. If you have a hardware problem, you may be asked to reinstall the original operating system to verify the coverage of the hardware.
Important!
Before installing Windows 7, first make sure that your HP notebook PC supports the Windows 7 operating system. Also, review the known issues and troubleshooting topics below for information about potential issues that might occur during the installation process.
The following series of HP notebook PCs are supported with Windows 7. For these product models only, HP provides hardware device drivers for both the Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.
NOTE:Notebook PCs that are not listed in the following table will not
be supported by HP with Windows 7. HP does not plan to release Windows 7 drivers or software for notebook models that are not listed in the following table.
To get the latest drivers when they are available, visit the
Software and Driver Download page
periodically and check for your model.

NOTE:The HP Pavilion series models shown in this chart with a dash after the dv number (example: Pavilion dv5-1001), are different than the Pavilion dv series with a four digit number and no dash (example: Pavilion dv5001). As a specific example; HP Pavilion dv5-1001au Entertainment Notebook PC can be upgraded to Windows 7 and drivers are available. However, HP Pavilion dv5001au Notebook PC is supported for Windows Vista, and no drivers are provided for an unsupported upgrade to Windows 7.
The following table lists known issues that may need to be resolved prior to or during an installation of Windows 7.

| Firewall and Virus software
for Windows Vista may not be compatible for Windows 7. Firewall and Virus software may include: AVG. 8.0 Security Suite, McAfee Personal Firewall, and Norton Internet Security 2008 and 2009. | Uninstall the firewall or virus software, then go to the manufacturer's web site to perform an upgrade to a Windows 7 compatible version of the software. |

The following table lists known issues and possible solutions or workarounds after performing an installation of Windows 7.
WARNING:Performing a custom install may delete the Recovery partition and the HP Recovery Manager program. In that case, you can only recover the operating system by using the Vista Recovery discs you created earlier, or by purchasing a retail version of the desired Windows operating system.

After upgrading to Windows 7, the following software cannot be installed using the application recovery tool in HP Recovery Manager:

The following HP MediaSmart 2.x
programs do not work correctly.

| HP System Recovery
: pressing F11 at system startup does not work. HP System Recovery cannot start from the Windows Start menu. | Install the Recovery Manager Installer Patch for Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade

If you are still experiencing issues with your new Windows 7 installation, consider troubleshooting the following areas:
- HP Support ForumsVisit the HP online community to see if others are experiencing the same installation issues, or create a new topic describing your issue. The online community is filled with knowledgeable people who often have similar experiences. The support forums are also monitored by HP.
Make sure all your device drivers are up to date.
Microsoft provides generic drivers for most standard hardware, but they may be incompatible with certain HP hardware. Review the previous section, Known issues that can occur after upgrade
, for information on specific drivers.
You can also open the Windows Device Manager
to see if there are any driver conflicts with the notebook's hardware. Driver conflicts are connoted in the Device Manager with an exclamation mark ("!") over the icon of the affected device. To resolve a driver conflict, open the device's Properties
window and manually update the driver on the Driver
tab, or visit the
Software and Driver Download page
and see if there is an update for your particular notebook model.
NOTE:Drivers for audio and video devices tend to be closely related, so if you update one device see if there is an update for the other device as well.
Make sure you are using the latest BIOS firmware.
Go to the HP Customer Care Web site (
http://www.hp.com/support
), select Software and Drivers, and enter your PC model number to find software and driver updates for your computer. If a BIOS update is available that has a higher revision number, download and install it following the instructions on the Web site.
Run Windows Update
multiple times until it displays the No important updates available
message.
Many Windows components require multiple updates because each update builds on an earlier one. This means if you run Windows Update once, you might be missing out on additional updates if you do not run it again. Only when you see the No important updates available
message can you be sure that all updates (and their prerequisites) have been applied.
