Setting Up the Printer for a Wired or Wireless Network for the HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw Multifunction Printer

This document is for the LaserJet Pro M1217nfw Multifunction printer.
This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your HP printer on a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network. The wireless setup instructions are specific to a wireless network that uses an access point
A device, such as a wireless router, that allows wireless-capable devices (like your HP product) to connect to your wireless network.
(infrastructure network). This document also explains how to change your printer from a USB install to a network install.

Follow these steps to install the printer in the Windows 8 operating system. First, choose your connection type.
Follow these steps to install your printer over a wired (Ethernet) network.

Step one: Check requirements

Make sure you have the following items:
  • One of the following types of wired access points or routers: Ethernet router, switch, hub, or wireless router with Ethernet ports
  • A computer that connects to the wired access point or router
  • A Category 5 Ethernet cable to use for the HP product. (Do not use a standard telephone cable.)

    Although an Ethernet cable looks similar to standard telephone cable, each has a different plug and a different number of wires. The plug on an Ethernet cable (also called an RJ-45 connector) is wide, thick, and always has eight wires. The plug on a telephone cable is narrower and has between two and six wires.

Step two: Change from a USB or wireless connection to an Ethernet connection (optional)

If you previously installed the software for a USB or wireless connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to reconfigure the USB or wireless installation before continuing.
  1. Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap Search.
  2. Click or tap Settings, and then type Devices in the Search box.
  3. Click or tap Devices and printers.
  4. Click Reconfigure your HP device.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reconfigure your printer's installation.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect your printer to the Ethernet network.
  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the back of the product.

  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the product, and then connect the other end of the cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.

  3. Connect the power cord to the product, and then plug it into an electrical outlet.
  4. Turn the product on.

Step four: Install the software

When you are ready to begin, follow the instructions to install the printer software. During the installation, choose the option to Connect through a Wired Network.
Step 1: Download the software
Follow these steps to download the software from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Step 2: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download completes, click or tap Run in the Notification bar.
    NOTE:If you closed the Notification bar after the download completed, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer, and then click or tap Downloads. Find the name of the HP software file, and then double-click or double-tap the file.
  2. Click or tap Yes in the User Account Control window, and then wait while the installer extracts the files.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
If you have a wireless-capable printer and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.

Step one: Prepare for installation

Follow these steps to prepare the printer for installation on the wireless network.
  1. Make sure that the printer, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  2. Close all applications running on your computer.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB or wired (Ethernet) connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to reconfigure the USB or Ethernet installation before continuing.

Step two: Install the printer software

Follow these steps to install the printer on a wireless network. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Step 1: Download the software
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Step 2: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download completes, click or tap Run in the Notification bar.
    NOTE:If you closed the Notification bar after the download completed, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer, and then click or tap Downloads. Find the name of the HP software file, and then double-click or double-tap the file.
  2. Click or tap Yes in the User Account Control window, and then wait while the installer extracts the files.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Follow these steps for the Windows 7 operating system. Next, choose your connection type.
Follow these steps to install your HP printer over a wired (Ethernet) network.
Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Check requirements

Make sure you have the following items:
  • One of the following types of wired access points or routers: Ethernet router, switch, hub, or wireless router with Ethernet ports
  • A computer that connects to the wired access point or router
  • A Category 5 Ethernet cable to use for the HP product. (Do not use a standard telephone cable.)

    Although an Ethernet cable looks similar to standard telephone cable, each has a different plug and a different number of wires. The plug on an Ethernet cable (also called an RJ-45 connector) is wide, thick, and always has eight wires. The plug on a telephone cable is narrower and has between two and six wires.
  • A network that uses a functional wired TCP/IP network.

Step two: Change from a USB connection to an Ethernet connection

If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

Step three: Connect the HP printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect the product to the wired network.
  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the rear of the product.

  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the rear of the product.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.
  4. Make sure the network light turns on.
    NOTE:The network light is next to the network port on the rear of the product.
  5. Wait 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name to the product.
  6. On the product control panel, press the OK () button.
  7. Print a configuration report:
    1. Load letter or A4 unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
    2. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
    3. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.
    4. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK.
  8. Make note of the product IP address on the Configuration Report for future reference.

Step four: Install the software

When you are ready to begin, follow the instructions for the installation method that you want to use. During the installation, choose the option for the network type of connection, not the USB option.
Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation fails.
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.
Step one: Download the software
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder, and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe.
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it.
  2. You can accept the default place to save the files. Click Next, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  4. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the USB.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
Follow these steps to install the software.
  1. Press the Power switch or button to turn on the product.
  2. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to begin.
    If the installer does not begin automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
  4. In the Software to Install window, you can choose to install the recommended software or the minimum software.
    • Recommended: Click Next to install the recommended software. The recommended software provides full product functionality and includes valuable software, such as HP Toolbox and Help and Learn Center. HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.
    • Minimum: Click Click here for more install options to install the minimum software. The minimum software contains only the print driver. Install the minimum software if the computer is low on hard disk space.
  5. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Network type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  6. Click Next.
      Important: At this point, the installer searches, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next again to continue with the installation.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
    NOTE:If you have previously installed the software and are changing the connection type from USB to Ethernet, click Add a device when the Uninstall the software or Add a device window opens.
    Important: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.
If you have a wireless-capable HP printer and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.
Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

  • Network name: The network name is the SSID
  • WEP key or WPA security passphrase
  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
    NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now

Step two: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure the HP printer, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  2. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the HP printer.
  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

Step three: Connect to the wireless network

Use one of the following methods to connect to the wireless network.

If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the product on a wireless network.
NOTE:This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the product.
  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.
  2. On the product control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.
  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.
    NOTE:If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try using another connection method.
Follow these steps to connect your printer to the wireless network using a USB cable.

If your wireless router does not support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), you can use this method to set up the product on a wireless network. Using a USB cable to transfer settings makes setting up a wireless connection easier.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, select the Connect through a wireless network option.
  3. Connect the USB cable () to the product and the computer when prompted.
    CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until the installation program prompts you.
  4. When the installation is complete, print a configuration report to make sure that the SSID

    listed for the product matches the SSID of the computer on which the product is connected:
    1. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
    2. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.
    3. Press the Right Arrow button to select Config Report, and then press OK to print the report.
    4. Check the status of the connection in the Network Information section on the report. The status should say Connected.
      The product IP address displays in the IPv4 Address section of the report. The Network Name (SSID) should be the correct wireless network for your networked HP product.
  5. After the report prints, disconnect the USB cable () from the product.

Step four: Install the printer software

To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation fails.

  5. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Wireless type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  6. Click Next.
      Important: At this point, the installer searches for, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next again to continue with the installation.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
    NOTE:If you have previously installed the software and are changing the connection type from USB to wireless, click Add a device when the Uninstall the software or Add a device window opens.
    Important: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.

If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the product on a wireless network.
NOTE:This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the product.
  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.
  2. On the product control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.
  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.
    NOTE:If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try using another connection method.

    CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until the installation program prompts you.
  4. When the installation is complete, print a configuration report to make sure that the SSID

    listed for the product matches the SSID of the computer on which the product is connected:
    1. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
    2. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.
    3. Press the Right Arrow button to select Config Report, and then press OK to print the report.
    4. Check the status of the connection in the Network Information section on the report. The status should say Connected.
      The product IP address displays in the IPv4 Address section of the report. The Network Name (SSID) should be the correct wireless network for your networked HP product.
  5. After the report prints, disconnect the USB cable () from the product.

Step four: Install the printer software

To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation fails.
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.
Step one: Download the software
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Step two: Install the software
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder, and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe.
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default place to save the files. Click Next, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  4. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Wireless type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  5. Click Next.
    Important: At this point, the installer searches, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next again to continue with the installation.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
Follow these steps to install the software with the printer CD.
  1. Press the Power button () or switch to turn on the product.
  2. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to begin.
    If the installer does not begin automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
  4. In the Software to Install window, you can choose to install the recommended software or the minimum software.
    • Recommended: Click Next to install the recommended software. The recommended software provides full product functionality and includes valuable software, such as the Toolbox and the Help and Learn Center. HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.
    • Minimum: Click Click here for more install options to install the minimum software. The minimum software contains only the print driver. Install the minimum software if the computer is low on hard disk space.
  5. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Wireless type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)
  6. Click Next.
      Important: At this point, the installer searches for, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next again to continue with the installation.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
    NOTE:If you have previously installed the software and are changing the connection type from USB to wireless, click Add a device when the Uninstall the software or Add a device window opens.
    Important: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system. Next, choose your connection type.
Follow these steps to install your HP printer over a wired (Ethernet) network.
Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Check requirements

Make sure you have the following items:
  • One of the following types of wired access points or routers: Ethernet router, switch, hub, or wireless router with Ethernet ports
  • A computer that connects to the wired access point or router
  • A Category 5 Ethernet cable to use for the HP product. (Do not use a standard telephone cable.)

    Although an Ethernet cable looks similar to standard telephone cable, each has a different plug and a different number of wires. The plug on an Ethernet cable (also called an RJ-45 connector) is wide, thick, and always has eight wires. The plug on a telephone cable is narrower and has between two and six wires.
  • A network that uses a functional wired TCP/IP network.

Step two: Change from a USB connection to an Ethernet connection

If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

Step three: Connect the HP printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect the product to the wired network.
  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the rear of the product.

  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the rear of the product.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.
  4. Make sure the network light turns on.
    NOTE:The network light is next to the network port on the rear of the product.
  5. Wait 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name to the product.
  6. On the product control panel, press the OK () button.
  7. Print a configuration report:
    1. Load letter or A4 unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
    2. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
    3. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.
    4. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK.
  8. Make note of the product IP address on the Configuration Report for future reference.

Step four: Install the printer software

When you are ready to begin, follow the steps for the installation method that you want to use. During the installation, choose the option for the network type of connection, not the USB option.
Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation fails.
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.

If you have a wireless-capable HP printer and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.
Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

  • Network name: The network name is the SSID
  • WEP key or WPA security passphrase
  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
    NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now

Step two: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that the HP printer, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  2. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the HP printer.
  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

Step three: Connect to the wireless network

Use one of the following methods to connect to the wireless network.

Step three: Install the printer with AirPrint

Apple's AirPrint provides basic functionality for printers that are connected to a wired (Ethernet) network. No additional software is downloaded when you add an AirPrint-enabled printer with AirPrint.
NOTE:Some printers might require a firmware update to enable AirPrint compatibility, depending on the model and purchase date. HP always recommends updating to the latest firmware version for the best performance and functionality.
Follow these steps to add an AirPrint printer in Mountain Lion.
  1. Turn on the printer, and make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
  2. Make sure that the printer is connected to the wireless or wired (Ethernet) network.
  3. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  4. Click Print & Scan.
  5. Click the plus sign () at the bottom of the left pane.
  6. Under Nearby Printers, click the name of your printer.
    NOTE:Make sure that the printer kind is Bonjour or Bonjour Multifunction.
  7. Click the Use box, and then select AirPrint from the pop-up menu if it is not selected already.

  8. Click Add to add the printer to the queue.
These steps explain how to set up your printer on a wireless network with AirPrint. Updated HP drivers and software for Mountain Lion are not available for your printer.
NOTE:Your printer must connect to a wireless network to install and use your printer with Mountain Lion.

NOTE:To gather this information, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network

  6. Click the Networking tab, and then click Wireless from the list on the left.
  7. Enable the wireless radio by clicking the Enable check box.
  8. Under Communication Mode, click Join an existing wireless network, select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click the desired network name.
  9. From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication, click WEP or WPA/WPA2. Your selection depends on which Wireless Security Protocol your network uses.
    NOTE:If your network does not have Wireless Security, leave the Security Mode set to Open System (No Authentication).
  10. Type your WEP/WPA/WPA2 key in the appropriate field, and then click Apply.
  11. In the confirmation box, click OK, and then close the HTML Config and Print Queue windows.
  12. In the Print & Scan window, click your HP printer from the list of printers, and then click the Minus sign to remove it from the list.
    NOTE:This action removes the USB Connection from the list so that the only entry for your HP printer is the Wireless Connection.
  13. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer.
  14. Under Applications, click the HP LaserJet Professional M1210 MFP Series folder.
  15. Click HP Setup Assistant, and then click Continue.
  16. Click Network, click HP LaserJet Professional M1217nfw MFP, and then click Continue.
  17. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the printer.

Step three: Install the printer with AirPrint

Apple's AirPrint provides basic functionality for printers that are connected to a wireless network. No additional software is downloaded when you add an AirPrint-enabled printer with AirPrint.
NOTE:Some printers might require a firmware update to enable AirPrint compatibility, depending on the model and purchase date. HP always recommends updating to the latest firmware version for the best performance and functionality.

The plug on an Ethernet cable (also called an RJ-45 connector) is wide, thick, and always has eight wires. The plug on a telephone cable is narrower and has between two and six wires.
  • A network that uses a functional wired TCP/IP network.

Step two: Connect the HP printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect the product to the wired network.
  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the rear of the product.

  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the rear of the product.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.
  4. Make sure the network light turns on.
    NOTE:The network light is next to the network port on the rear of the product.
  5. Wait 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name to the product.
  6. On the product control panel, press the OK () button.
  7. Print a configuration report:
    1. Load letter or A4 unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
    2. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
    3. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.
    4. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK.
  8. Make note of the product IP address on the Configuration Report for future reference.

Step three: Install the software

To install the printer software, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download).
NOTE:If you partitioned your hard drive, you must install the driver on the same partition as the operating system.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  1. Insert the Macintosh product CD into the CD drive of the computer.
  2. Double-click the HP software disc icon that displays under the Macintosh HD icon.
  3. Double-click the HP Installer icon.
    The HP Installer program opens.
  4. When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

IMPORTANT! Before you begin
Set up the HP hardware before installing the software. If you have not already done so, find the Hardware Setup document for your product before completing these steps.
If you are connecting your product to a computer that has a Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) operating system, do not reinstall software from Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5. Older software is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
Before you can install the product, your wireless network must already be set up. (To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your particular access point.)
Before you can install the product, you must have the following information about the network:
  • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
  • Password: WEP key or WPA passphrase
NOTE:To gather this information, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
  • If you have not yet installed your printer, follow the steps in Option one.
  • If you want to change your existing connection to a wireless network, follow the steps in Option two.
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these instructions.
Step one: Prepare for installation
  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • WEP key or WPA security passphrase
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network.
    • Internet access. HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.
    • Your wireless-capable HP product. Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation).
    • Administrator privileges or password
  2. Make sure the product, access point, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connecting to the wireless network.
  3. Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
Step two: Connect to the wireless network
Use one of the following methods to connect to the wireless network.
Follow these steps to connect your printer to the wireless network using WPS.

If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the product on a wireless network.
NOTE:This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the product.
  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.
  2. On the product control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.
  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.
    NOTE:If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try using another connection method.
  1. In Finder, click Applications, and then double-click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Fax or Print & Scan.
  3. Click Open Print Queue, and then click Printer Setup.
  4. Click the Utility tab, and then click Open Printer Utility.
  5. Click the EWS Browser tab, and then click EWS Browser.
  6. Click the Networking tab, and then click Wireless from the list on the left.
  7. Enable the wireless radio by clicking the Enable check box.
  8. Under Communication Mode, click Join an existing wireless network, select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click the desired network name.
  9. From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication, click WEP or WPA/WPA2. Your selection depends on which Wireless Security Protocol your network uses.
    NOTE:If your network does not have Wireless Security, leave the Security Mode set to Open System (No Authentication).
  10. Type your WEP/WPA/WPA2 key in the appropriate field, and then click Apply.
  11. In the confirmation box, click OK, and then close the HTML Config and Print Queue windows.
  12. In the Print & Fax or Print & Scan window, click your HP printer from the list of printers, and then click the Minus sign to remove it from the list.
    NOTE:This action removes the USB Connection from the list so that the only entry for your HP printer is the Wireless Connection.
  13. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer.
  14. Under Applications, click the HP LaserJet Professional M1210 MFP Series folder.
  15. Click HP Setup Assistant, and then click Continue.
  16. Click Network, click HP LaserJet Professional M1217nfw MFP, and then click Continue.
  17. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the printer.
Step three: Install the software
To install the printer software, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download).

  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Use one of the following methods to change your existing connection to a wireless network. If your wireless router does not support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), use method two.
NOTE:This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the printer.

Step two: Delete the USB connected printer, and then add the wireless connected printer
  1. Click the Apple icon (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Fax.
  3. Under Printers, click your product, and then click the Minus sign (-) to remove the product.
  4. Click the Plus sign (+) to find your product.
  5. When you find your product, make sure that the connection type listed under Kind is Bonjour.
  6. Click Add to add your wireless connected product.
Follow these steps to change the connection type using the USB wireless setup.
Step one: Connect the printer to the wireless network
  1. On the menu bar, click Go.
  2. Click Applications, double-click Hewlett-Packard, and then double-click Device Utilities.
  3. Double-click HP Setup Assistant, and then click Continue.
  4. Click your product, and then click Continue.
  5. When prompted, click the checkbox next to Configure your device for a wireless network.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure your product.
  7. If the Setup Assistant does not automatically detect your product and your wireless security, type the SSID in the SSID (Network Name) box.
  8. Click OK to complete the wireless setup.
  9. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Step two: Delete the USB connected printer, and then add the wireless connected printer
  1. Click the Apple icon (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Print & Fax.
  3. Under Printers, click your product, and then click the Minus sign (-) to remove the product.
  4. Click the Plus sign (+) to find your product.
  5. When you find your product, make sure that the connection type listed under Kind is Bonjour.
  6. Click Add to add your wireless connected product.
