Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless Network for the HP Deskjet 3050A and 3070A e-All-in-One Printer Series

Introduction

This document contains instructions to install the product in an existing wireless network that uses an access point, such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your product.
NOTE:You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.
Important: There are two methods available for setting up your printer on a wireless network. The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' method might display as an option during installation, depending on your network environment. If the ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect’ method does not display as an option, there is an alternate USB setup method available. HP recommends using ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect.’
NOTE:‘HP Auto Wireless Connect’ is offered up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation will default to the alternate USB setup method.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional: If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.
NOTE:This tool is not available for Mac operating systems.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

Follow these steps to download and install the software.
NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Step three: Select the wireless connection setup option

Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:

Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays (initial setup only)

HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.

Option two: The 'Wireless Setup Using a USB connection' screen displays

Follow these steps to connect to the wireless network with a USB cable.

Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • Network password: The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
    • A computer connected to the wireless network.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
  2. Make sure that the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.
  3. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  4. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
  5. Optional: Follow these steps if you previously set up the printer for a USB connection and want to change to a wireless connection.
    1. Click Go in the top Menu bar, and then click Applications.
    2. Click the HP folder, and then click Device Utilities.
    3. Double-click HP Setup Assistant.
    4. Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Select one of the following options for steps to connect the printer to the network, depending on the option that displays on your computer.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is available in most network and computer environments for 120 minutes after you turn on the printer for the first time. After 120 minutes, the wireless connection method defaults to a wireless setup using a USB connection.
  1. Select your printer (HP Auto Wireless Connect), and then click Continue.
  2. Follow the instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup.
  1. Select the USB Device, and then click Continue to start the connection setup process.
  2. Check the box to configure the printer wirelessly.
Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running OS X v10.7 Lion.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.7. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Select one of the following options for steps to connect the printer to the network, depending on the option that displays on your computer.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is available in most network and computer environments for 120 minutes after you turn on the printer for the first time. After 120 minutes, the wireless connection method defaults to a wireless setup using a USB connection.
  1. Select your printer (HP Auto Wireless Connect), and then click Continue.
  2. Follow the instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup.

  2. Check the box to configure the printer wirelessly.
Select a method to install the software on a Mac running OS X v10.9 Mavericks.
  • If you recently updated your Mac to OS X v10.9, and the printer was previously connected to your network, use the method 'Add the network-connected printer to the queue.'
  • If you are installing the printer in OS X v10.9 for the first time, you must use the method 'Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup.'
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.9. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.
Use this method if you recently upgraded to OS X v10.9 Mavericks, and the printer was previously connected to your wireless network.
You do not need to download a driver from the HP Software & Driver Downloads page if you use Apple Software Update. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.
Important: The printer must already be connected to the wireless network to download and install the software.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  2. Click Printers & Scanners.
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.
  4. Click the plus sign ().
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.
  6. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
    NOTE:If the printer was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (), select your printer, and then click Add.
If you are installing this printer for the first time in OS X v10.9, you must use this method.

Step one: Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup

Use one the push button or PIN method to connect the printer to the wireless network.
  1. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button for 3 seconds. The wireless light starts blinking.
    NOTE:The printer starts a timer that allows you about two minutes to press the WPS button on the wireless router.
  2. Press and hold the WPS button on the wireless router for several seconds. The printer automatically finds the wireless network and then configures the connection.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button. The Wireless Menu displays.
  2. Select Wireless Settings.
  3. Select Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
  4. Select PIN, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Step two: Install the software

The software CD that shipped with your printer is not supported in OS X v10.9 Mavericks. Follow these steps to download the current software from Apple Software Updates. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that uses the HP printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.9 Mavericks. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click Software Update. Software Update checks for available updates and updates the database that your computer uses to determine available printer software.
  2. Click Show Details, select any available software updates, and then click Install.
    NOTE: Install all available software updates for best printer performance and functionality.
  3. Turn on the printer, and then make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
  4. Make sure that the printer is connected to the wireless network, or is connected to the USB port of a Time Capsule or AirPort Base Station.
  5. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
  6. Click Printers & Scanners, and then click the plus sign () in the lower left corner of the window.
  7. Click Add Printer or Scanner for a full list of printers.
  8. Under Name, click the name of your printer.
    NOTE:Make sure that the printer kind is Bonjour or Bonjour Multifunction.
  9. Click the Use box, and then select the name of your printer in the drop-down menu.
  10. Click Add to add the printer to the queue.
  11. If you are prompted to install any additional software for your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
    NOTE: Quit and restart any applications that were open before adding the printer to use the updated HP software features.
