Introduction
This document contains instructions to install the product in an existing
wireless network that uses an access point
, such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure
network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your product. 

NOTE:You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection.

Network name:
The network name is the SSID
WEP key or WPA security passphrase- A computer that is connected to the wireless network
- Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web services or get product updates. - Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
- A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor
. If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password. ![]() NOTE:The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. This tool is available for all Windows operating systems except Windows RT. The tool is not available for Mac OS operating systems. Follow these steps to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then locate your network login information.

Step two: Prepare for the installation

NOTE:Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before beginning the steps to install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network.
- Make sure the printer, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
- Exit all applications running on your computer.
- Disconnect the USB cable if it is connected to the printer, and then choose from the following options:
- Click Start (
), click All Programs
, click HP
, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer - Click Printer Setup & Software Selection .
- Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless , and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on a wireless network.
Continue to the next step to connect the printer to the network.
Step three: Decide whether to install with the printer CD or download the software
Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD!
You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:
| For a new printer: | CD installation is a quick and easy method. |
| For an older printer: | CD installation might not work
if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released. For example, Windows Vista released in 2007. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Vista. |
| About the software: | The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release. |
| For a new printer: | If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need. |
| For an older printer: | Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer.
Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues. Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released. |
| About the software: | The software you can download from the HP website is most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers after the printer and CD release to the market. |
Step four: Install the printer software
To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.

: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock

During the installation, the Basic Device Software
is required to enable full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.If the installer does not start automatically, click Start (
), click My Computer
, and then double-click the CD drive. - Accept the installation agreements, and then click Next .
NOTE:It might take several minutes for your computer to install the printer software. - When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
- Follow these steps to complete the software installation:Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click Next . Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup.Connect the USB cable, and then click next .
Follow these steps to download, and then install the software.
Step one: Download the software
Follow these steps to download the software and save it to your computer.
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Go to Get Software and Drivers to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page.
- Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
- Type your printer number in the window.
- Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar printers.
- Click Software and Driver Downloads .
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
- Click the Plus sign (
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download. - Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions (
) for complete download instructions. - Click Download .
- If the File Download Security Warning window displays, click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.Hint: Make a note of the folder where you saved the file in case you want to install it later.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
- When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it. - Click Next to accept the default location, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for the installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
- When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
Step three: Select the wireless connection setup option
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays
HP Auto Wireless Connect
automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect
screen displays.

NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup.
- Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click Next .
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.

The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' method might display as an option during installation, depending on your network environment. If the ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect’ method does not display as an option, there is an alternate USB setup method available. HP recommends using ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect.’

- Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless , and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on a wireless network.

NOTE:The software file automatically saves to the Downloads folder on your computer. If you want to install it at a later time, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer , and then click or tap Downloads to access the file.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
- When the download completes, click or tap Run in the Notification bar.
NOTE:If you closed the Notification bar after the download completed, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer , and then click or tap Downloads . Find the name of the HP software file, and then double-click or double-tap the file. - Click or tap Yes in the User Account Control window, and then wait while the installer extracts the files.
Step three: Select the wireless connection setup option
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
HP Auto Wireless Connect
automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect
screen displays.

NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).
- Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click or tap Next .
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Connect the USB cable, and then click or tap Next
.
Click or tap in The Printer is already connected to the wireless network
box.
Follow these steps to install the software with the printer CD.
Step one: Install the software
During the installation, the Basic Device Software
is required to enable full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
Follow these steps to install the software with the CD.
- Turn the printer on.
- Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait for the software installer to start.
NOTE:If the CD does not automatically start the installer, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer , click or tap Computer , and then click or tap the CD or DVD drive. Double-click or double-tap on the Setup.exe file. - When prompted to select a connection type, select Network / Wireless , and then click or tap Next .
- Proceed with the next correct option.
NOTE:During the installation, you might be prompted to set up the printer hardware. If you have already set up the printer hardware, you can click or tap Next to bypass any hardware setup steps.
Step two: Select the wireless connection setup option
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
HP Auto Wireless Connect

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
Step one: Prepare for installation
- Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
- Your network is already set up : Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
- Obtain the network name and password : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
Tip To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase. - Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
- A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
- Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
- Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
- Exit all applications running on your computer.
- Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:
- Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock.
NOTE:HP Utility is also located in Applications/Hewlett-Packard folder. - Click Applications , and then double-click HP Setup Assistant .
- Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection.
Continue to the next step to proceed with the installation.
Step two: Decide how to install the software
Select one of the following options for information on which installation method to use.

NOTE:HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website or use the installation CD that came with your printer. Apple Software Update installations do not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.
Installing with the product CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.
Important
: If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER
your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work
.

to install the latest product software for the newer operating system.The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the

page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
- You no longer have the product software CD
- You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released
Step three: Install the software
Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.
