Copying Photos from a Camera to Your Computer (Windows 7)

This document pertains to HP and Compaq computers with a memory card reader, and a digital camera.
Import your photos into Windows Photo Viewer from your camera so you can view, organize and share them.

Step 1: Connect the camera or the memory card to your computer

Before you can transfer photos from your camera to your computer, you must first connect the hardware containing the digital photographs to your computer using one of the following methods:

  1. Make sure the computer is turned on and Windows is open. For best results, save any work currently in progress and close any software programs that are open.
  2. Connect the camera and computer using the USB cable that came with your camera, and then turn on the camera.
    NOTE:If your camera came with an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) cable and your computer has an available 1394 port, you can use 1394 instead of USB.

  3. Wait while Windows recognizes the camera and configures it for use in Windows. If an AutoPlay Window opens, click Import photos .
OR
Most cameras use a removable memory card to store digital photographs. If you have a memory card reader for your computer and it supports the same type of card used by your camera, then you can use a memory card reader to access your photographs on the computer.
  1. Remove the memory card from your camera. The memory card is often concealed by a slide-out panel on the camera.

  2. Insert the memory card into the appropriate memory card slot in the card reader.
    NOTE: If your computer does not have a built-in card reader, you can use an external USB card reader that is compatible with the memory card from your camera.

  3. Wait while Windows recognizes the camera and configures it for use in Windows. If an AutoPlay Window opens, click Import photos .

Step 2: Transfer photos using the Import Pictures and Videos feature

  1. After your hardware has been connected, the Import Pictures and Videos screen opens.
  2. If you would like the filenames on each file to start with a name, other than simply a number, then type a name in the field provided. Otherwise, leave the field blank.

  3. Click Import .
    Your photos are copied into the Pictures library.

Step 3: View your photos with Windows Photo Viewer

Windows Photo Viewer is the default photo viewer on Windows 7. You can use Windows Photo Viewer to view your digital photos in a variety of ways.
NOTE:In addition to viewing files you can explore the tabs in Windows Photo Viewer to print your photos, order prints, attach pictures to an email message, write the files on a disc, or open photos in another program on your computer.
  1. Click Start , Pictures , Libraries , and then click Pictures .
  2. Open the folder containing the picture you want to view.
  3. Use one of the following options to open the Windows Photo Viewer:
    • Double click on a picture.
    • On the toolbar, click the Preview button.
  4. Use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to change the size of the picture, rotate the picture, or start a slideshow.
