Installing the printer software for a Wireless Network Connection

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
NOTE:If you have not already set up your printer, click here for instructions to set up the printer hardware , and then return to this document to set up your printer on a wireless network.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network.
  1. Gather the following items:
    •   Network name: The network name is the SSID
    •   WEP key or WPA security passphrase
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional : If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection .
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless , and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network

Follow these steps to connect the product to your wireless WLAN 802.11 network.
  1. On the control panel, touch the Wireless icon ( ).
  2. Touch Settings .
  3. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard .
    The Wireless Setup Wizard searches for networks, and then displays them in a list.
  4. Touch the name of your network.
    If the list does not contain your network name, follow these steps to enter it manually:
    Touch Enter New Network Name .
    On the control panel, touch the appropriate letters and numbers to enter the network name (SSID).
    NOTE:Make sure that you enter the uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters exactly. Otherwise, the wireless connection fails.
    When you finish entering the new network name, touch Done , and then touch OK .
    Touch Infrastructure , and then touch WEP encryption or WPA encryption.
    If you do not want to use encryption (a security password), touch No, my network does not use encryption , and then skip to step 6.
  5. If prompted, enter the WEP or WPA key:
    1. Touch the appropriate letters or numbers on the on-screen keyboard.
      NOTE:You must enter the exact uppercase and lowercase letters. Otherwise, the wireless connection fails.
    2. When you are finished entering the WEP key or WPA key, touch OK to confirm.
      The product attempts to connect to the network.
  6. Make sure the product successfully connects to the network before continuing to the next step.
    NOTE: If a connection error message displays, make sure that the network name and security key are correct, and then follow the prompts to enter the information again.

Step three: Download and install the printer software

NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next .
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver .
  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

Step two: Connect to the wireless network

Step two: Connect to the wireless network

    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up : Before you can install the printer, you must set up your wireless network. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The WEP key or WPA security passphrase are other names for the password.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  5. Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:

NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.

  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .

  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
