Introduction
With the release of OS X 10.7 Lion, HP is providing updated print drivers and software. These updates are available through Apple Software Update
in Mac OS X: you do not need to download a driver from HP
to use your product in Lion. Also, new with OS X 10.7, you can add an AirPrint-enabled printer to any Mac computer.

NOTE:This feature is available only with AirPrint-enabled HP products. For additional information, go to the section on adding an AirPrint-enabled printer in this document.
Depending on the product functionality
, one or more of the following HP software components might be included in the HP driver update:
After the public release of Lion, HP is releasing updated full HP software packages for many models on the HP Software and Drivers page. These software packages will include the HP installer with network setup and HP Scan 3. The schedule delay allows time for full testing and quality assurance from HP against the final OS X 10.7 release.
If you attempt to install the HP software on Lion using the software CD that came with your product, or using a previously downloaded driver, the message, Unsupported Operating System: This installer is not compatible...
, might display.
If you receive the message during installation, do not worry. This is expected behavior. The message is merely to notify you that you must obtain the HP software for OS X 10.7 Lion in another way.

Installing and using the printer with Lion
Follow these steps to install or update the HP software for OS X 10.7 Lion.
Step one: Decide how to install or update the software
Click the plus sign (
) for information on which software installation method to use.
) for information on which software installation method to use. Apple Software Update is a quick and easy software download method available directly through the Mac OS operating system.
You do not need to download a driver from HP Software & Driver Downloads if you install using Apple Software Update.
This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.

NOTE:If your printer supports scanning, the software that you use to scan might be different than the software you used before upgrading your operating system. Depending on your printer driver update, you can use Preview
, Image Capture
, or the Scan
icon from the print queue to scan.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
- You no longer have the software CD that shipped with your printer
- The updated full-feature HP software for the new version of Mac OS is not immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page
- You updated Mac OS to a new version that released after your printer released
- You are doing a first time install of a new version Mac OS on a new Mac
- You already installed HP software on a Mac running an earlier version of Mac OS and have updated to a new version of Mac OS
- You are doing a first time install on a new Mac with Lion OS X 10.7
- You have already installed HP drivers on an older version of Mac and are updating to OS X 10.7
Adding an AirPrint-enabled printer is a quick and easy way to use your printer without installing a driver.
HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
- You need only basic print functionality
- You prefer not to download a driver
- Guest printing
Step two: Install or update the HP software

Step one: Install or update the HP software for a USB connection
- Important : Check the following prerequisites before continuing with the installation:
- Turn on your HP product, if it is not already on.
- Turn on your Mac, if it is not already on.
- Connect the HP product to the Mac with a USB cable.OR
- Make sure that there is an existing print queue for your HP product.
NOTE:If you get a prompt to download software, click Not Now , and then continue with these instructions. - Click the Apple menu (
), and then click Software Update
. Software Update checks for available updates. - In the Software Update window, if you see an available HP software update, select it and then click Install .
NOTE: Install all available HP software updates for best product performance and functionality. - When prompted, enter your administrator account name and password.
- After the software updates complete, restart the computer (if required).
Step two: Add the printer
- Click the Apple menu (
), and then click System Preferences
. - Click Print & Scan .
- Click the plus sign (
). The name of your product displays. - Select your HP product listed as a USB type, and then click Add .
NOTE:You must choose the USB connection type for a USB-connected product. - Click Install , and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the product to the queue.
- After the installation process completes, verify that your product displays in the queue.
NOTE:If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (
), select your HP product, and then click Add
.

Step one: Add the printer
- Important : Check the following prerequisites before continuing with the installation:
- Turn on your HP product, if it is not already on.
- Turn on your Mac, if it is not already on.
- Connect the HP product to the Mac with a network connection.OR
- Make sure that there is an existing print queue for your HP product.
NOTE:If there is an existing print queue for your product, continue to Step two: Install or update the HP software for a network connection . - Click the Apple menu (
), and then click System Preferences
. - Click Print & Scan .
- Click the plus sign (
). The name of your product displays. - Select your HP product listed as a Bonjour type, and then click Add .
NOTE:You must choose the Bonjour connection type for a network-connected product. - Click Install , and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the product to the queue.
- After the installation process completes, verify that your product displays in the queue.
NOTE:If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (
), select your HP product, and then click Add
.
Step two: Install or update the HP software for a network connection
- Click the Apple menu (

New with OS X 10.7, you can add an AirPrint-enabled printer to any Mac computer. HP recommends installing the HP software and driver for your product from Apple Software Update.

NOTE:AirPrint supports basic print functionality over a Bonjour network, wireless or Ethernet. Scan or utility functionality is not available.
AirPrint does not work with a USB connection to the Mac or an AirPort Base Station

: Check the following prerequisites:- Turn on the HP product, if it is not already on.
- Connect the HP product and the Mac to the same local Bonjour wireless or wired (Ethernet) network.
- Click the Apple menu (
), and then click System Preferences
. The System Preferences window opens. - Click Print & Scan . The Print & Scan window opens.
- Click the plus sign (
), and then click the name of your AirPrint-enabled HP product. The product name displays in the bottom of the pane in the Print Using
box. - Click the Print Using box, and then select AirPrint Printer .
- Click Add to add the product and create the new printer queue.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Following is a list of frequently asked questions related to your HP product and the OS X 10.7 Lion update.
When you install the driver update from Apple Software Update, you can still scan with your product (if it is scanning capable). Depending on your product and the type of driver update, you might need to scan with different software than you did before you installed Lion.

- Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to modify scan settings such as output type.
