How to Scan: From the Control Panel

Introduction

This document explains how to scan a picture or a document using the touch screen on your HP product.
Before scanning, make sure that the computer is on, the product software is installed, and the HP product is connected to the computer with a USB cable, or through a wireless network connection.
Use the following steps to scan documents or images to the computer. First, select your connection type.
Click the plus sign () for more information.
Follow these steps to scan from the HP product to a computer over a wireless network connection.

Step one: Activate the scan connection to the computer

Follow these steps to activate the scan connection between the HP product and the computer.
Mac users : This step is not necessary for Mac operating systems. Skip to the next step.
IMPORTANT : To send scans from your HP product to a computer over a wireless network, you must enable the Activate Scan to Computer connection from the HP software after the computer restarts, hibernates, or enters sleep mode (the hard disk shuts down).
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the HP product.
  2. Choose one of the following methods to open the HP software:
      Double-click the product icon ( ) on your desktop.
      1. Click Start ( ).
      2. Click All Programs , click the HP folder, click the folder with the name of your product series, and then click your product.
      1. Click the Windows icon ( ).
      2. Click Programs or All Programs , click the HP folder, click the folder with the name of your product series, and then click your product.
  3. Under Scanner Actions , click Manage Scan to Computer , and then click Enable .
  4. Click the box next to Automatically Start Scan to Computer when I log into Windows to enable automatic activation of the Scan to Computer connection.

Step two: Place the document or image on the scanner glass

Follow these steps to place the document or image that you are scanning on the scanner glass.
  1. Lift the scanner lid.

  2. Place the document or image with the print side down on the right, front corner of the scanner glass.

  3. Close the scanner lid.

Step three: Select the scan type from the product control panel

Follow these steps to scan from the product control panel.
  1. From the home screen on the product control panel, touch Scan ( ).
  2. Touch the computer icon to scan to the connected computer.
  3. Touch the name of the computer that you want to save the scan to.
  4. Touch one of the following scan options that is applicable to the document or image that you are scanning.
    Scan optionDescription
    Document to fileUse this setting to scan text documents that will not be editable.
    Photo to fileUse this setting to scan pictures and images.
    Document to emailUse this setting if you want to scan and email a non-editable text document in Microsoft Outlook or similar email software.

    NOTE:You can only email a scanned document if you use Microsoft Outlook or another software program as your primary email program. You cannot use software based email programs, (for example, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or Hotmail) unless you can send and receive emails from your account using Microsoft Outlook or a similar program.
    Photo to emailUse this setting to scan and email pictures or images in Microsoft Outlook or similar email software.

    NOTE:You can only email a scanned document if you use Microsoft Outlook or another software program installed in Windows to send and receive your email. The Photo to email feature does not work with software based email programs, (for example, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or Hotmail) unless you can send and receive emails from your account using Microsoft Outlook or a similar program.
  5. Touch Scan . The product scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination specified in the settings.
Follow these steps to scan to a computer with a USB cable connection.

  3. Close the scanner lid.
