Introduction
eFax® is a service provided by j2 Global Communications, Inc., not Hewlett-Packard, that allows you to send and receive faxes using the Internet instead of a phone line. eFax is easy to use, but the service differs from a typical phone-based fax machine.
This service is free
when you send up to 20 pages and receive up to 20 pages per month. To send and receive additional fax pages per month, visit

Getting started with eFax
Important
: To send or receive faxes using eFax, your HP product must be connected to the Internet on a wireless network, and you must enable Web Services. If you use a USB cable to connect your HP product to your computer, you also need to connect it wirelessly to use eFax. Follow these steps to register for an eFax account and start using the service.
- From the home screen on the product control panel, touch the eFax icon (
) to display the eFax home screen. - If prompted, touch Enable to enable ePrint.
NOTE:If ePrint is already enabled on your product, you are not prompted to enable it during the eFax registration process. - A Welcome to eFax screen might display. If it does, touch Next to continue.
- Touch Register , and then touch Accept . The Terms and Conditions screen displays.
- To read the eFax brand services agreement, touch Customer Agreement , and then touch OK .
- Touch Accept to accept the Terms and Conditions.
- Enter the required information on the eFax Registration screen using the touch keypad display, and then touch Next . A Confirm Registration screen displays.
- Make sure that all the information you entered is accurate, and then touch OK .
- Wait for the registration process to complete. When the product connects with the eFax server, a Registration Successful screen displays with your assigned eFax number.
NOTE:Although the eFax number area code might not be local to you, you do not incur any long distance charges when sending and receiving faxes with this number. - Touch OK . The eFax home screen displays.
- From the home screen on the product control panel, touch the eFax icon (
) to display the eFax home screen, and then touch Next
. - Touch Login , and then enter your assigned eFax number and the personal identification number (PIN) for your account.
NOTE:If you do not remember your PIN, touch the indicated area on the Login screen to have your PIN sent to the email address associated with your eFax account. - Touch Login to continue. Your eFax number and PIN code are sent to eFax for verification. After they are verified, your existing eFax number displays on the eFax home screen and you are ready for faxing.
NOTE:If eFax cannot verify the eFax number and PIN you entered, log in to your eFax brand account at www.efax.com and review your account information. You cannot fax using your assigned eFax number until the eFax account information is verified on the product.
When you use eFax to send a fax, it is sent over the Internet to the eFax server and then eFax sends your fax to the recipient’s fax machine over a standard phone line. Follow these steps to send a fax from your HP product.
- From the home screen on the product control panel, touch the eFax icon (
) to display the eFax home screen. - Lift the scanner lid.
- Place the document on the scanner glass with the print side down, and then position the document using the engraved guides on the right-front corner of the glass.
- Close the scanner lid.
- Touch the Recipient fax number box. A touch keypad displays.
- Enter the recipient's fax number using the touch keypad, and then touch OK .
NOTE:If you are sending the fax outside of your country, make sure that the appropriate international dialing codes are used. - Touch Start . The product scans the document.
- When the scan completes, touch Scan Next Page to scan additional pages that you wish to include in your fax.
- Touch Send . The product sends the fax.
- When the fax has been successfully sent, the Fax Sent screen displays. Touch OK .
To receive a fax using eFax, you must first give your fax number (provided during eFax account setup) to the sender.
When a fax is received, it prints automatically.

Faxes received are also sent electronically to the email address associated with the eFax account.

NOTE:eFax is subject to monthly faxing limits and the customer terms and conditions.
The following conditions are required to use the eFax service:
- The HP product must be connected to the Internet on a wireless network
NOTE:If you use a USB cable to connect your HP product to your computer, you also need to connect it wirelessly to use eFax. - Web Services must be enabled
- ePrint must be enabled
The eFax service allows for 20 incoming and 20 outgoing fax pages per month. You can monitor your page count on the eFax home screen on the HP product control panel. The page count resets at midnight Pacific Time on the first day of the month.
If you require more than 20 incoming and 20 outgoing fax pages per month, you can upgrade your eFax account to the monthly fee-based eFax Plus® service. Click the following link,

When you register for eFax on the HP product control panel, you are assigned an eFax number. Alternately, if you already have an existing eFax number, you can enable it on your product.

NOTE:The eFax number area code might not be local to you. You do not incur any
long distance charges when sending and receiving faxes with this number.
When you register for eFax on the HP product control panel, you can enable a number from an existing eFax account. To enable the number, you need the email address and the personal identification number (PIN) for the existing account. After eFax verifies the existing number, the number displays on the
control panel.

NOTE:If eFax cannot verify the number and PIN you entered, log in to
your account at
www.efax.com
and review your account
information. You cannot fax until the account
information is verified on the HP product.
Depending on your country, you might not receive a domestic number when you register with eFax.
You might receive a new domestic number by upgrading to the monthly fee-based eFax Plus service. eFax Plus can be cancelled at any time, but if you choose to upgrade again at a later date, you will need to register again and you will receive a new eFax number. Click the following link,

Follow these steps to dial a domestic or international fax number with eFax.

NOTE:To troubleshoot issues when sending a fax, review the eFax Delivery Confirmation page
that prints after a fax sends. Invalid fax number issues are typically indicated by the following fields on the confirmation page:
- Disposition Notification = 'Failure'
- Fax Status = '63'
To send a fax to a recipient within your country, dial the complete fax number, including the area/city code.

NOTE:The area/city code is required, even if you are dialing a local number.
Follow these steps to send a fax to a recipient in another country.
- Dial the international dialing prefix for your country.
- Dial the recipient’s country code.
- Dial the complete fax number, including the area/city code.
