You can print with black ink only, but the printer will still use ink from the color cartridges for servicing tasks. Some ink from all the cartridges is required to service the printhead and prevent clogging. When you see a message that says that a cartridge is empty, it must be replaced before you can continue printing.
You can choose to print with black ink only by adjusting the print settings. You must have the printer's full feature software installed on your computer to change this print setting. Click here to download your printer's full feature software from the HP website .
Select your operating system, and then follow the steps to print using only the black cartridge.

  3. Click the option that opens the Printer Properties dialog box. Depending on your software application, this option might be called Printer Properties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Preferences .
