Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
NOTE:If you have not already set up your printer, click here for instructions to set up the printer hardware , and then return to this document to set up your printer on a wireless network.
If you already set up the printer and are just looking for the driver to download, click here for the HP Software and Driver Downloads page. If prompted, type your printer name, press Enter , and then click Drivers .
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network:
Do not worry if you do not have all of the items yet! The HP Print and Scan Doctor

can help you gather some of these items.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional : If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection .
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.
NOTE:If you converted your printer from a USB connection to a wireless connection, skip to the step to connect the printer to your wireless network.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation fails.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next .
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver .
  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.

Step three: Connect the printer to your wireless network

The HP software installer provides steps to connect the printer to the network. Click one of the following options, depending on which screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered up to 60 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the alternate USB setup method.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click Next .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
  1. Temporarily connect a USB cable from your printer to your computer when prompted so that your network information can be communicated to the printer.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.

Important : There are two methods available for setting up your printer on a wireless network. The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' method might display as an option during installation, depending on your network environment. If the ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect’ method does not display as an option, there is an alternate USB setup method available. HP recommends using ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect.’

NOTE:If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

    4. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.
NOTE:If you converted your printer from a USB connection to a wireless connection, skip to the step to connect the printer to your wireless network.

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:

    • WEP key or WPA security passphrase
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network.
    • Internet access. HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.
    • Your wireless-capable HP product. Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation).
    • Administrator privileges or password
  2. Make sure the product, access point, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connecting to the wireless network.
  3. Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  1. Double-click the HP Utility icon from the Dock. The HP Utility window opens.
    NOTE:The HP Utility is also located in Applications/Hewlett-Packard folder.
  2. Click Applications , and then click HP Setup Assistant .
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to change your connection type to an existing wireless network.
NOTE:If you converted your printer from a USB connection to a wireless connection, skip to the step to connect the printer to your wireless network.

  1. Click Continue .
  2. Click Agree or Allow to allow HP Setup Assistant to transfer the wireless settings from your Mac to your printer.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup.
  1. Check the box to configure the printer wirelessly.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the wireless connection.
Follow these steps for OS X v10.7 Lion.
Important : There are two methods available for installing your printer on a wireless network. The HP Auto Wireless Connect method might display as an installation option, depending on your network environment. If this method does not display, an alternate USB wireless setup method is available. HP recommends using HP Auto Wireless Connect.

NOTE:If you converted your printer from a USB connection to a wireless connection, skip to the step to connect the printer to your wireless network.
