Installing the Product Software for a Wireless Network Connection

Introduction

This document contains instructions to install the product in an existing wireless network that uses an access point , such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your product.
NOTE:You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection.

Important : Before you can install the product, your wireless network must already be set up. To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your particular access point.
Click the plus sign () next to your operating system for more information.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.
IMPORTANT: You must follow these steps in the order presented .

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

You must have the following items before you install the HP product on the wireless network:
Don't worry if you do not have all of the items yet! The HP Print and Scan Doctor can help you gather some of these items ( ).
  •   Network name: The network name is the SSID
  •   WEP key or WPA security passphrase
  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
    NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor . If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password.

NOTE:The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. This tool is available for all Windows operating systems except Windows RT. The tool is not available for Mac OS operating systems.


Follow these steps to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then locate your network login information.

  1. Click the following link to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  2. Make sure your computer meets the system requirements, and then click Download .
  3. Check to see if the Security Warning dialog box opens, and then click the Plus sign ( ) next to the corresponding option:
      When the Security Warning dialog box opens, choose one of the following methods to download the wizard.
        1. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Run .
        2. When the Download Complete dialog box opens, click Run , and then click Run again on the Security Warning dialog box. The Print and Scan Doctor opens.
        1. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Save .
        2. When the Save As window opens, browse to your Desktop, and then click Save .
        3. When the download is complete, browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to install the utility. The Print and Scan Doctor opens.
      1. Click Run in the Notification bar to download the software.
      2. Click Yes in the User Account Control window.
  4. On the Menu bar in the Print and Scan Doctor window, click Network .
  5. Click Show Advanced Info .
  6. Click Show Wireless Info .
  7. Under the Wireless Settings pane, identify the name of your network under SSID , and then identify the Network Key next to it in the list.

Step two: Prepare for the installation

NOTE:Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your HP product before beginning the steps to install the software and set up the product on a wireless network.
  1. Make sure that the HP product, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  2. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  3. Disconnect the USB cable if it is connected to the HP product, and then choose from the following options:

Step three: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software

Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD! You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:
    For a new printer:CD installation is a quick and easy method.
    For an older printer:CD installation might not work if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.

    For example, Windows Vista released in 2007. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Vista.
    About the software:The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release.
    For a new printer:If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
    For an older printer:Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.

    Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released.
    About the software:The software you can download from the HP website is most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers after the printer and CD release to the market.

Step four: Install the product software

To install the HP product on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation will fail.
Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.
  1. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:
    Click Start ( ), click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
    NOTE:If the Installation Agreements and Settings window opens, click the check box to accept the terms of the agreements, and then click Next .
  2. Wait while the computer installs the HP product software. It could take several minutes.
  3. When prompted to select a connection type, select Network , and then click Next .
  4. When prompted, connect a USB cable temporarily to add the HP product to your network.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
      1. Type your product number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Continue to the next step.

      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
      3. Continue to the next step.
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  6. Click More Info , and then read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  8. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  9. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
  10. Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it.
  2. Click Next to accept the default location to save the files, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to Prepare for the installation.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
  4. When prompted to select a connection type, select Network . The Connection type menu displays.
  5. When prompted, connect a USB cable temporarily to add the HP product to your network.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.
Important : There are two methods available for setting up your HP product on a wireless network. The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' method might display as an option during installation, depending on your network environment. If the ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect’ method does not display as an option, there is an alternate USB setup method available. HP recommends using ‘HP Auto Wireless Connect.’
NOTE:‘HP Auto Wireless Connect’ is offered up to 60 minutes after initial product setup. After that time, the installation will default to the alternate USB setup method.

NOTE:HP recommends that you download the software from the HP Web site, or use the installation CD that came with your product. Apple Software Update installations do not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.

To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.

Installing with the product CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.
Important : If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work . Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads to install the latest product software for the newer operating system.
The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • You no longer have the product software CD
  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released

Step four: Install the product software

Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation will fail.
Step one: Install the software
  1. Insert the Macintosh product CD into the CD drive of the computer.
  2. Double-click the HP software disc icon that displays on the desktop. The HP Software window opens.

  3. Double-click the HP Installer icon. The Welcome to the HP Installer window opens.

  4. Click Continue , and then click Agree to accept the Software License Agreement.
  5. When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK .
      • HP Auto Wireless Connect (Recommended) automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your product through the wireless connection in order to connect the product to the same network.
      • USB installs the product for use with a USB cable.
      • USB Setup of Wireless automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your product over a USB connection in order to connect the product to the same network.
Step two: Select the wireless connection setup option
Click the plus sign ( ) for more information as it applies during your installation.
Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays
  1. Click Continue .
  2. Click Agree or Allow to allow HP Setup Assistant to transfer the wireless settings from your Mac to your Printer.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup.
Option two: The 'Wireless Setup Using a USB Connect' screen displays
  1. Check the box to configure the HP product wirelessly.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the wireless connection.
Step one: Download and install the software
  1. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers .
  2. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the plus sign ( ) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
      1. Type your product number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.

    The Select Software and Drivers page opens.
  3. Click the plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  4. Click Download only . If your browser opens a new dialog box, you might also need to click Save or Save File .
    The file downloads to your computer, and the HP Software window opens automatically.
    NOTE:If the HP Software window does not open, double-click the HP Software icon on the desktop.

  5. Double-click the HP Installer icon. The Welcome to the HP Installer window opens.

  6. When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK .

Follow these steps for OS X 10.7 (Lion).

Step one: Gather network information that might be required during installation

To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.
  •   Network name : The network name is the SSID
  •   WEP key or WPA passphrase
  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
  • Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
  • Your wireless-capable HP product : Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now

Step two: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that the HP product, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  2. Click the appropriate installation option:
