Mac OS X v10.7 Lion: An 'HP Utility quit unexpectedly' Error Message Displays on the Computer

Issue

When attempting to save the scan settings in HP Utility for Mac OS X v10.7, an 'HP Utility quit unexpectedly ' error message displays on the computer.

Solution

HP has released a critical update to resolve this issue.
NOTE:You must have the latest Full Feature software installed to resolve the issue.
Follow these steps to download and install the latest Full Feature software, and then download and install the critical update.

Step one: Download the Full Feature software

Follow these steps to download and then install the software from the HP website.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Downloads page: Get Software and Drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click Full Feature Software and Drivers .
  6. Optional: Click More Info , and then read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. Click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download . This option enables you to install the software at any time after the download.
  8. Click Save , and then browse to the folder on your computer where you want to save the file.
  9. Make a note of the location to use in the next step to install the software.
  10. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
  11. Do not close the Software and Driver Downloads page, because you need to download and then install the critical update in a later step.

Step two: Install the HP software

Follow these steps to install the downloaded HP Full Feature software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, open the Downloads folder, and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .dmg .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen or saved the file to a different location, browse to the folder where you saved the .dmg file, and then double-click it.
  2. On the install options screen, click the check box next to HP Recommended Software to install the Full Feature software.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Step three: Download and install the critical update

After you install the Full Feature software, follow these steps to download and then install the critical update.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you connected it during the software installation).
  2. Turn the product on.
    • If you still have the Software and Driver Downloads page open, skip to the step to find the critical update.
    • If you closed the Software and Driver Downloads page, continue to the next step.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Downloads page: Get Software and Drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign ( ) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
      If prompted to enter your product in the window .
      1. Type your product number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary, click your model in a list of similar products.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
      If prompted to select your operating system .
      1. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next .
      3. Continue to the next step.
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Update , and then click Critical Update to fix Scan to Computer issue on Mac OS X v10.7 .
  6. Click Download . This option enables you to install the update any time after the download.
  7. Click Save , and then browse to the folder on your computer where you want to save the file.
  8. Make a note of the location in case you need to install it later.
  9. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
  10. Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click HP_Scan_for_Mac_OS_X_10.7_Update.dmg to start the installation.
  11. Double-click the file ending in .mpkg , and then click Continue .
  12. Choose the location to install the update, and then click Continue .
  13. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
