This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. Complete these steps before you install the printer software on your computer.

Step one: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step two: Unpack the All-in-One

  1. Remove all tape and packing material from the outside of the printer.

  2. Open the cartridge access door, and then remove the tape from inside the printer.

  3. Close the cartridge access door.

  4. Pull out the paper tray, and then remove the tape from the tray.

  5. Push the paper tray back into the printer until it clicks into place.

Step three: Connect the power cord and turn on the All-in-One

  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug it into an electrical outlet.

  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the printer.

Step four: Select your language and country/region

When you first turn on the printer, it prompts you to select your language and region. Follow these steps to set the default language and country/region for your printer.
  1. Touch your desired language, and then touch Yes to confirm the language choice. The Set Region menu displays.

  2. Touch your desired region, and then touch Yes to confirm the country/region choice.

Step five: Load plain paper

  1. Open the paper tray door, and then pull out the paper tray.
  2. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost positions.

  3. Load a stack of plain paper into the tray with the short edge facing toward the product and the print side down. Push the stack into the tray until it stops.

  4. Slide the paper width guides in until they rest against the edges of the paper, and then slide the tray back in until it stops.

  5. Pull open and lift the paper tray extender.

Step six: Install the cartridges

CAUTION:When you first setup the printer you must install the cartridges that shipped in the box. These cartridges are labeled SETUP, and they calibrate your printer before the first print job. Failure to install the SETUP cartridges during the initial printer setup causes an error.
  1. If the printer is off, press the Power button () to turn on the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the access area.

  3. Remove the plastic wrap from a new cartridge by pulling the orange tab.

  4. Remove the orange cap from the cartridge. Twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off.

  5. With the nozzle and the contacts facing down, push the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks into place. Make sure that the color icon on the cartridge label matches the color icon on the slot.

  6. Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridges.
  7. Close the cartridge access door.

Step seven: Align the All-in-One

Use one of the following methods to align the printer.
Follow these steps to align the printer using the control panel.
  1. From the home screen, touch the Setup icon (), and then touch Tools.
  2. Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Align Printer. The alignment page prints.
  3. Lift the lid on the printer, and then place the alignment page print side down in the right front corner of the scanner glass.

  4. Close the lid, and then press OK on the control panel. The printer will align automatically. Press OK to continue.
Follow these steps to align the printer using the printer software.
  1. Load letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. Open the HP Printer Assistant:
      Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer ().
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer ().
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer ().
    The HP Printer Assistant opens in a new window.
    NOTE:You can also open the HP printer software from your computer desktop: double-click the icon for your HP printer ().
  3. Click Maintain Your Printer (). The HP Toolbox opens in a new window.
  4. Click Align Printheads (). The Align Printheads dialog box opens.
  5. Click Next to print the alignment page.
  6. Lift the lid on the printer, and then place the alignment page print side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.

  7. Close the lid, and then press OK on the control panel. The printer will align automatically. Press OK to continue.
