An 'Ink System Failure' Error Message Displays on the Control Panel or on the Computer

Issue

An 'Ink System Failure ' error message displays on the product control panel or on the computer. The product does not print.

Solution one: Turn the product off and back on

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product back on.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Remove and reinsert the printhead

The printhead might not be seated properly in the carriage. Follow these steps to remove and then reinsert the printhead.

Step one: Remove the printhead

Follow these steps to remove the printhead.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product if it is not already on.
  2. Slip your fingers into the slot on the left side of the product, and then pull forward to open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.

  3. Lift the latch handle on the carriage.

  4. Grasp the sides of the printhead, and then lift the printhead and pull it towards you to remove it.
    NOTE:Do not remove the cartridges from the printhead. You can safely remove the printhead with all of the cartridges inserted.

    CAUTION:Handle the printhead carefully to avoid ink stains. Avoid touching the underside of the printhead.

Step two: Reinsert the printhead

Follow these steps to reinsert the printhead.
  1. Grasp the printhead on both sides with the electrical contacts facing the rear of the product, and then insert the printhead into the carriage.

  2. Lower the latch handle on the carriage.

  3. Close the cartridge access door.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the product

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Replace the printhead

If you have completed all of the preceding troubleshooting steps and are still experiencing a problem, contact HP to replace the printhead assembly.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Service the product

If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
