This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. The wireless setup instructions are specific to a wireless network that uses an access point
A device, such as a wireless router, that allows wireless-capable devices (like your HP product) to connect to your wireless network.
, also referred to as an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your printer. Ad-hoc connections are not supported.

Step one: Prepare for installation
Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
Turn on the printer, the access point, and then the computer.
Connect your computer to the wireless network.
Close any unnecessary applications running on your computer.
Step two: Decide whether to install with the CD or download the software
Before you install the software, choose an installation method. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use.
CD
Download the software from the HP website
For a new printer:
The CD method is recommended for new printers and provides two installation options:
Go online
(Internet connection needed)
This option provides the following benefits:
When you click Go Online
at the start of the CD software installation, the CD checks online for the latest software for your printer.
You might be offered guided access to set up an account at ePrintCenter (network models only).
Basic CD installation
(no Internet connection needed)
Use this option if you do not want to go online to download the software.
If you do not have the CD, you can download the software.
NOTE:This method does not offer guided access to set up an account at ePrintCenter.You can go to

For an older printer:
CD installation might not work
if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.
For example, Windows 7 and Mac OS X v10.6 released in 2009. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Windows 7 or Mac OS X v10.6.
Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer.
Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.
Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released.
About the software:
The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release.
The software you can download from the HP website is the most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the printer and CD release to the market.
Step three: Install the printer software
To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.

Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
If the installer does not start automatically, click Start

In the installation window, click No thanks, I prefer the basic CD installation
.
Select your printer software, and then click Next
.
Accept the installation agreements, and then click Next
.
NOTE:It might take several minutes for your computer to install the printer software.

Follow these steps to complete the software installation:
Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer
, and then click Next
. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.

Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions

If the File Download Security Warning
window displays, click Save
, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
Click Save
. The software downloads to your computer.
Hint: Make a note of the folder where you saved the file in case you want to install it later.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder
, and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe
.
NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete
screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe
file, and then double-click it.
Click Next
to accept the default location, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for the installation.
Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless

Step three: Select the wireless connection setup option
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays
HP Auto Wireless Connect
automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect

You are not sure which driver you should select
NOTE:The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers. This wizard is available only for Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating systems.The HP Printer Install Wizard works with printers connected with a USB cable or with a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network connection. If you would like to connect your printer wirelessly, but it is not yet on a wireless network, you need to temporarily connect the printer with a USB cable to run the wizard.
Step two: Download the wizard

If your printer is not in the list, click My Printer is not listed
, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
The wizard automatically displays the best available driver for your HP printer.
If a full feature driver is available
, the wizard detects it. Click Next
to download and install the software. For full functionality, HP recommends installing the full feature driver if it is available.
This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
If an in-Operating System (in-OS) driver is available
, the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It also supplies a link to more information about using the in-OS driver with your printer.
An in-OS driver is a basic driver that is already included in the operating system. You do not need to download or install any software from HP.
If a Windows Update driver is available
, the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It will also supply a link to more information about using a Windows Update driver.
When you connect the USB cable to the printer, and then to the computer, or Windows 8 detects that the printer is on the same network as the PC, Windows activates Windows Update. Windows Update searches online for the most recent printer driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver. The Windows Update process takes place automatically.
If an alternate driver is available
, the wizard supplies a link to learn how to install and configure the alternate driver for your printer.
NOTE:Alternate drivers are supported by Windows 7 only.
For some products that do not have a driver available, there might be another compatible driver that you can use instead.

automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect
screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Option two: The 'Wireless Setup Using a USB connection' screen displays
Click or tap in The Printer is already connected to the wireless network
box.
Option three: Connect using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:

: There are three methods available for installing your printer on a wireless network. The HP Auto Wireless Connect
method might display as an installation option, depending on your network environment. If this method does not display, an alternate Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) method is available.
Step one: Prepare for installation
Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
Your network is already set up
: Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
Obtain the network name and password
: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
Tip
To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
Internet access
: Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
A USB cable
(used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
Exit all applications running on your computer.
Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:
Installing with the printer CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your printer, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.
