Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless network for the HP Deskjet 3510 and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3510 e-All-in-One Printer Series

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. The wireless setup instructions are specific to a wireless network that uses an access point
A device, such as a wireless router, that allows wireless-capable devices (like your HP product) to connect to your wireless network.
, also referred to as an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your printer. Ad-hoc connections are not supported.
NOTE:If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before you install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network. If you need detailed steps see set up the hardware .
Follow these steps in the order presented for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network:
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional: If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps to download and install the printer software. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Step three: Connect your printer to the wireless network

Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Follow these steps to connect your printer to a wireless network using a USB cable.

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • Network password: The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
    • A computer connected to the wireless network.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
  2. Make sure that the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.
  3. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  4. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
  5. Optional: Follow these steps if you previously set up the printer for a USB connection and want to change to a wireless connection.
    1. Click Go in the top Menu bar, and then click Applications.
    2. Click the HP folder, and then click Device Utilities.
    3. Double-click HP Setup Assistant.
    4. Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

  1. Check the box to configure the HP printer wirelessly.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the wireless connection.
Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the Lion operating system.

The following video demonstrates how to connect your wireless HP printer to a wireless network through a USB cable.

  1. Check the box to configure the HP printer wirelessly.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the wireless connection.
Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the Mountain Lion or Mavericks operating system.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • Network password: The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
    • A computer connected to the wireless network.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
  2. Make sure that the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.
  3. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  4. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
  5. Optional: Follow these steps if you previously set up the printer for a USB connection and want to change to a wireless connection.
    1. Click Go in the top Menu bar, and then click Applications.
    2. Click the HP folder, and then click Device Utilities.
    3. Double-click HP Setup Assistant.
    4. Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Download and install the software

Use the following steps to download and install the printer on the wireless network. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE:To install the printer software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website. The printer CD is not supported in Mountain Lion, and Apple Software Update does not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Select one of the following options for steps to connect the printer to the network.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is available in most network and computer environments for 120 minutes after you turn on the printer for the first time. After 120 minutes, the wireless connection method defaults to a wireless setup using a USB connection.
Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays on the computer.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Follow these instructions to connect using a USB cable when the Wireless network connection screen displays on your printer control panel.

  1. Connect the USB cable to the HP product, and then to your computer.
  2. Select the HP product, and then click Continue.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the HP Product.
