Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. The wireless setup instructions are specific to a wireless network that uses an access point
A device, such as a wireless router, that allows wireless-capable devices (like your HP product) to connect to your wireless network.
, also referred to as an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your printer. Ad-hoc connections are not supported.

NOTE:If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.

Follow these steps in the order presented for the Windows XP operating system.
NOTE:Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before you install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network. If you need detailed steps see set up the hardware .

Step one: Prepare for installation

Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
  1. Turn on the printer, the access point, and then the computer.
  2. Connect your computer to the wireless network.
  3. Close any unnecessary applications running on your computer.

Step two: Decide whether to install with the CD or download the software

Before you install the software, choose an installation method. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use.
CD Download the software from the HP website
For a new printer:The CD method is recommended for new printers and provides two installation options:

  • Go online (Internet connection needed)
    This option provides the following benefits:
    • When you click Go Online at the start of the CD software installation, the CD checks online for the latest software for your printer.
    • You might be offered guided access to set up an account at ePrintCenter (network models only).
  • Basic CD installation (no Internet connection needed)
    Use this option if you do not want to go online to download the software.
If you do not have the CD, you can download the software.

NOTE:This method does not offer guided access to set up an account at ePrintCenter.You can go to ePrintCenter to create an account after you complete the software installation.
For an older printer:CD installation might not work if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.

For example, Windows 7 and Mac OS X v10.6 released in 2009. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Windows 7 or Mac OS X v10.6.		Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.

Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released.
About the software:The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release.The software you can download from the HP website is the most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the printer and CD release to the market.

Step three: Install the printer software

To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation fails.
Select either the Basic CD Installation (no Internet connection needed) or the Go online (Internet connection needed) option using your printer CD.
Use the Basic CD installation if you do not want to go online to download the software.
During the installation, the Basic Device Software is required to enable full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If the installer does not start automatically, click Start ( ), click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  3. In the installation window, click No thanks, I prefer the basic CD installation .
  4. Select your printer software, and then click Next .
  5. Accept the installation agreements, and then click Next .
    NOTE:It might take several minutes for your computer to install the printer software.
  6. When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
  7. Follow these steps to complete the software installation:
Follow these steps to download the software and install it on your computer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer.
  3. When the installer starts, click Go Online . The most recent printer software downloads to your computer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Follow these steps to download, and then install the software.
Step one: Download the software
Follow these steps to download the software and save it to your computer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Go to Get Software and Drivers to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page.
  3. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  4. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  5. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  6. Click Download .
  7. If the File Download Security Warning window displays, click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  8. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the folder where you saved the file in case you want to install it later.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it.
  2. Click Next to accept the default location, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for the installation.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
  4. When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
Step three: Select the wireless connection setup option
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays
HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click Next .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Option two: The 'Wireless Setup Using a USB connection' screen displays
Option three: Connect using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
NOTE:The following WPS methods might not be compatible with your router. If your router does not offer the WPS feature, then follow the steps to connect using a USB cable.
Select from the following wireless methods when the Wireless network connection screen displays on your printer control panel.
Method one: Push button
  1. On the printer control panel press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Settings , and then press OK .
  2. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Wireless , and then press OK .
  3. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup , and then press OK .
  4. Press OK to select Push Button Setup , and then press OK to start.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.
    NOTE:Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Method two: PIN
  1. On the printer control panel press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Settings , and then press OK .
  2. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Wireless , and then press OK .
  3. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup , and then press OK .
  4. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select PIN Setup , and then press OK .
  5. Press OK to start.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.
    NOTE:Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.

NOTE:The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers, and is available only for the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.
What does the Printer Install Wizard do?
Following are some common installation problems that the HP Printer Install Wizard can help with:
  • You cannot find your driver for Windows 8
  • You need help using your HP printer in the same way you used it with your old Windows operating system
  • You are not sure which driver you should select
NOTE:The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers. This wizard is available only for Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating systems.The HP Printer Install Wizard works with printers connected with a USB cable or with a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network connection. If you would like to connect your printer wirelessly, but it is not yet on a wireless network, you need to temporarily connect the printer with a USB cable to run the wizard.
Step two: Download the wizard
  1. Click or tap the following link to download the wizard:

  2. Make sure that your computer meets the system requirements, and then click Download .
  3. Check to see if the Security Warning dialog box opens, and then click the Plus sign ( ) next to the corresponding option:
      If the Security Warning dialog box opens
      When the Security Warning dialog box opens, choose one of the following methods to download the wizard.
        Method one: Run the utility
        1. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Run .
        2. When the Download Complete dialog box opens, click Run , and then click Run again on the Security Warning dialog box.
        Method two: Save the utility
        1. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Save .
        2. When the Save As window opens, browse to your Desktop, and then click Save .
        3. When the download is complete, browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to install the utility.
      If the Security Warning dialog box does not open
      1. Click Run in the Notification bar to download the software.
      2. Click Yes in the User Account Control window.
    When the wizard finishes installing, the wizard opens automatically.

Step three: Run the HP Printer Install Wizard
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the HP printer and to the computer, if it is not already connected to the computer or the network.
  3. Make sure that your computer has an Internet connection. The wizard must access the Internet to work correctly.
  4. Click Next to begin the utility. The wizard displays a list of detected products.
  5. If the wizard detects more than one printer, select your HP printer from the list.
  6. The wizard automatically displays the best available driver for your HP printer.
    • If a full feature driver is available , the wizard detects it. Click Next to download and install the software. For full functionality, HP recommends installing the full feature driver if it is available.
        What is a full feature driver?
        This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
    • If an in-Operating System (in-OS) driver is available , the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It also supplies a link to more information about using the in-OS driver with your printer.
        What is an in-OS driver?
        An in-OS driver is a basic driver that is already included in the operating system. You do not need to download or install any software from HP.
    • If a Windows Update driver is available , the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It will also supply a link to more information about using a Windows Update driver.
        What is a Windows Update driver?
        When you connect the USB cable to the printer, and then to the computer, or Windows 8 detects that the printer is on the same network as the PC, Windows activates Windows Update. Windows Update searches online for the most recent printer driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver. The Windows Update process takes place automatically.
    • If an alternate driver is available , the wizard supplies a link to learn how to install and configure the alternate driver for your printer.
      NOTE:Alternate drivers are supported by Windows 7 only.
        What is an alternate driver?
        For some products that do not have a driver available, there might be another compatible driver that you can use instead.
Step four: Select the wireless connection setup option
Depending on the option that displays on your printer, select from the following wireless setup options:
Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays
HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click or tap Next .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Option two: The 'Wireless Setup Using a USB connection' screen displays

  6. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click or tap View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click or tap Download .
  8. Click or tap Save in the Notification bar to download the software.
    NOTE:The software file automatically saves to the Downloads folder on your computer. If you want to install it at a later time, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer , and then click or tap Downloads to access the file.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download completes, click or tap Run in the Notification bar.
    NOTE:If you closed the Notification bar after the download completed, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer , and then click or tap Downloads . Find the name of the HP software file, and then double-click or double-tap the file.
  2. Click or tap Yes in the User Account Control window, and then wait while the installer extracts the files.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) operating system.
NOTE:Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before you install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network. If you need detailed steps see set up the hardware .
Important : There are three methods available for installing your printer on a wireless network. The HP Auto Wireless Connect method might display as an installation option, depending on your network environment. If this method does not display, an alternate Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) method is available.

Step one: Prepare for installation

Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up : Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  5. Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:

Step two: Decide whether to install with the CD or download the software

The following information might help you decide which software installation method to use.
Installing with the printer CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your printer, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.
Important : If you try installing the printer on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER your HP printer released, the CD installation method might not work . Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer.

  3. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup , and then press OK .
  4. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select PIN Setup , and then press OK .
  5. Press OK to start.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.
    NOTE:Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Option three: Connect using a USB cable
Follow these instructions to connect using a USB cable when the Wireless network connection screen displays on your printer control panel.
  1. Check the box to configure the HP printer wirelessly.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the wireless connection.

NOTE:Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before you install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network. If you need detailed steps see set up the hardware .
Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the Mountain Lion operating system.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up : Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  5. Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:

Step two: Install the software

Use the following steps to install the printer on the wireless network. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE:To install the printer software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website. The printer CD is not supported in Mountain Lion, and Apple Software Update does not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  3. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
      If prompted to enter your product in the window .
      1. Type your printer number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar printers.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
      If prompted to select your operating system .
      1. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
  4. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  5. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  6. Click the option that you want to download.
    A page displays with more information about that option and the specific items that it includes.
    NOTE:HP recommends the Full Feature type of download, if available, to take advantage of all your printer features.
  7. Click Download . If your browser opens a new dialog box, you might also need to click Save or Save File .
    The file downloads to your computer.

  8. Double-click the icon above the file name. The computer extracts the files and displays a disk image file icon above the printer name.

  9. Double-click the disk image file.
  10. Double-click the HP Installer icon.
    The HP Installer program opens.
  11. When prompted, select your printer, and then click OK .
  12. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Select one of the following options for steps to connect the printer to the network.
NOTE:HP Auto Wireless Connect is available in most network and computer environments for 120 minutes after you turn on the printer for the first time. After 120 minutes, the wireless connection method defaults to a wireless setup using a USB connection.
Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays on the computer.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer , and then click Next .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Follow these instructions to connect using a USB cable when the Wireless network connection screen displays on your printer control panel.
  1. Connect the USB cable to the HP product, and then to your computer.
  2. Select the HP product, and then click Continue .
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the HP Product.
