Setting Up the Printer Software for a Wireless Network for the HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3540 e-All-in-One Printer Series

This document applies to the HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3540 e-All-in-One printer series for the Windows and Mac operating systems.
This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
If you already set up the printer and are just looking for the driver to download, click here for the HP Software and Driver Downloads page. If prompted, type your printer name, and then click Drivers.
Follow these steps in the order presented for the Windows XP operating system.
NOTE:If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional: If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.
NOTE:This tool is not available for Mac operating systems.

Step two: Connect the printer to the network

  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button (), and then select Settings.
  2. Scroll to select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then press OK. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to the network.

Step three: Download and install the printer software

Follow these steps to download and install the software.
NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

Step four: Select the wireless connection setup option

HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Printer Network Connection option. Follow these steps, depending on which option might display on your installation screen.
  1. Select Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Follow these steps to check the network status of the printer.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button ().
  2. On the computer, select the next option based on the connection status you see on the control panel.
      Either connect your printer to the wireless network using the Wireless Network Wizard or turn on the Wireless Radio. The next screen on the software installation shows you how to proceed.
      The software installation prompts you for the printer’s IP address. The IP address displays on the printer control panel. Touch the Wireless button () again if the printer control panel does not display the wireless network status.
  3. Click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup.
Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.
NOTE:If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.

    2. In the Search box, type HP, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    3. Click Utilities, and then click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
    4. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.
NOTE:This tool is not available for Mac operating systems.

    • Your network is already set up: Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access: Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.

    NOTE:HP Utility is also located in the Applications/Hewlett-Packard folder.
  2. Click Applications, and then click HP Setup Assistant.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to change your connection type to an existing wireless network.

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the OS X v10.7 Lion operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up: Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the OS X v10.10 Yosemite, OS X v10.9 Mavericks or OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion operating system.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.10 Yosemite, OS X v10.9 Mavericks or OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.
