This document contains a collection of frequently asked questions (FAQs) by people using Solid State drives (SSDs) and Solid State Hybrid drives (SSHDs). Review the FAQs below to find information you need about the drives, their differences and their use.
A Solid State Drive (SSD) uses NAND Flash solid state memory to store data. A Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) uses NAND Flash memory storage in addition to, and combined with, traditional hard drive storage. To take advantage of some of the benefits of both the SSD and HDD, the SSHD was developed. The SSHD storage device performs like an SSD, providing some of the benefits of both SSD and HDD and has a higher storage capacity.
Yes, an SSHD is faster than a regular drive. The SSHD recognizes and stores in memory data that is most often used or accessed, which means the computer starts up faster and opens applications faster, enhancing overall performance.
To determine if you have an SSHD in your computer:
- Go to the Device Manager and look at the model number of the hard drive. The model number includes SSHD for Solid State Hybrid Drive.
- If your computer is older and has an earlier model SSHD, the model number includes 1EJ16 to indicate that the hard drive is a Solid State Hybrid Drive.
NAND flash memory is solid state memory that is usually used for read operations and which, when incorporated into the design of a hybrid drive, enhances the overall speed and operation of the hard drive. The NAND flash memory identifies and stores the most often used data, speeding up the access to that data, increasing the performance of the computer.
No, it is not necessary, nor is it recommended to run a disk defragmenter. Disk defragmentation is not necessary, and using a disk defragmenter temporarily slows the performance of the computer.
Yes you can, with excellent results, use Raid 0 and Raid 1 configurations. An SSHD in RAID 0, as compared to a single drive configuration, delivers performances as much as 70% higher.
Standard drives in RAID configuration should not be used with SSHD drives as this will nullify the benefits of using a hybrid drive.
Because current drives are not designed for multi-drive vibrations, they have not been tested with RAID 5, 6, or 10, and are not recommended.
