Troubleshooting the Photo Card Reader
The product does not read the digital camera or memory card
If the memory card is inserted backwards or not fully inserted, or if a memory card is inserted and a digital camera connected at the same time, the product cannot read the memory card or the digital camera.
- Check the control panel for an error message that indicates what the problem is and how to solve it. Possible error messages include, 'Card is in backwards ' or 'Card is not fully inserted .'
- Make sure to insert the memory card in the correct slot.
- Make sure to insert only one memory card at a time.
- Remember to use only the memory card, or connect only the camera. Only one can be used at a time. Remove the memory card or disconnect the camera.
- If the file system on the card is corrupt, reformat the memory card in the digital camera. See the user guide for your camera for instructions on how to reformat the memory card.
Some photos do not appear on a proof sheet
The unprinted photos are corrupt or damaged in some way. The product indicates a damaged photo by printing a circle with a line through it in place of the photo, or indicates that the date of the photo is invalid. A file name on the memory card might also contain double-byte characters. The product does not recognize double-byte characters.
- Delete the damaged files and retake the photos with the digital camera.
- If you already transferred the files to a computer, try printing those transferred files from the computer.
- Do not use double-byte characters in file names. See the user guide for your camera for instructions on how to remove double-byte characters in file names.
No photos print after scanning a proof sheet
There are several reasons why scanning a proof sheet produces no printed photos.
- The proof sheet is placed incorrectly on the glass.
- The proof sheet is not readable.
- The proof sheet is mismarked.
- No photos are selected on the proof sheet for printing.
- The memory card used to print the proof sheet is not in the product.
- Use a dark pen or pencil to fill in the circles located under the thumbnail images on the proof sheet.
- Make sure the scanner glass is clean.
- Turn off the product, unplug the power cord, and then raise the lid.
- Clean the glass with a soft cloth or sponge slightly moistened with a nonabrasive glass cleaner.WARNING:Do not use abrasives, acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride on the glass; they can damage it. Do not place or spray liquid directly on the glass; the liquid might seep under the glass and damage the device.
- Dry the glass with a chamois or cellulose sponge to prevent spotting.
- Load the proof sheet face down on the right front corner of the glass. Make sure the sides of the proof sheet touch the right and front edges.
- Make sure the same memory card you used to print the proof sheet is still in the product when you scan the proof sheet.
The status light on the product is amber and blinking
There are several reasons the status light next to the memory card slots turns amber and begins to blink:
- The product detects an error with the memory card.
- The product detects more than one memory card in the product.
- An incompatible camera is connected through the camera port.
- A memory card is inserted and a digital camera is connected at the same time.
- Remove and reinsert the memory card. The card might be inserted incorrectly. If the problem continues, the card might be defective.
- If there are multiple memory cards in the product, remove one of the memory cards. Use only one memory card at a time.
- Check the user guide that came with the camera to see if the camera supports PictBridge.
- If the camera does not support PictBridge, use the cable that came with the camera to connect the camera to the USB port on the back of the product instead of connecting the camera to the product's camera port.
- If the camera supports PictBridge, make sure the camera is set to PictBridge mode. See the user guide that came with the camera for instructions on how to set the camera to PictBridge mode.
- Remove the memory card or disconnect the camera. Only one can be used at a time.
The photos on the memory card do not transfer to my computer
Photos on a memory card do not transfer to a computer for the following reasons:
- The computer is off.
- The product is not connected correctly to the computer through a USB cable or network.
- Portions of the HP Photosmart Essentials or HP Photosmart Studios software are missing or inoperable.
- Turn on the computer.
- Make sure the cables that connect the product to the computer or network are connected.
- Reset the product.
- With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the electrical outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
- If a reset of the product fails to correct the problem, try a reinstall of the software that came with the product, or try the workaround below.
Follow these steps according to your operating system to open the memory card as a drive, and then copy and paste the desired files to a location on the computer.
Option one: Windows XP or Vista
- Insert the memory card into the product.
- Open My Computer .Windows XP: Click Start , and then click My Computer .Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Computer .A window displays with a list of all the drives and their associated peripherals.
- Double-click the drive associated with the memory card.
- Select the photos you want to copy, right-click, and then select Copy .NOTE:Press the CTRL key at the same time you click to select specific photos. To select all the photos, right-click in the window, and then choose Select All .
- Open the folder on your computer where you want to store your photos, right-click in the folder, and then select Paste .
Option two: Macintosh OS X, version 10.4 and later
- Insert the memory card into the product.
- Double-click the Mounted Drive on the desktop to open.
- Select the photos you want to copy. Hold the Command key while clicking with the mouse to select multiple photos.
- With the photos selected, press the Command key, and then press C on the keyboard to copy.
- Open the folder on your computer where you want to store your photos, press the Command key, and then press V on the keyboard to paste the copied photos.
