No Sound When Playing a Music CD

This document applies to Microsoft Windows 98, Me, and XP.
This document will help you resolve problems related to the absence of sound while playing a music CD. See Related support if you have a different problem that involves sound.
Checking the volume settings
  1. Double-click the small volume icon in the taskbar.
    If the volume icon is missing in Windows XP, perform the following actions:
    1. Click Start , and then Control Panel .
    2. Click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices , and then Sound and Audio Devices .
    3. Select Place volume icon in the taskbar and then click OK .
  2. Make sure that the volume has not been muted. If the volume has been muted, remove any checkmarks from the Mute boxes and adjust the volume setting slide bars to the highest positions.

  3. Close the Master Volume window and test for sound.
Disabling digital audio
Many CD drives do not use digital playback. Perform the steps below to disable digital CD playback:
  1. In Windows XP and Windows Me, right-click My Computer , and then select Properties .
    In Windows 98, click Start , and then click Settings .
  2. In Windows XP, click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
    In Windows Me, click the Device Manager tab.
    In Windows 98, click Control Panel and then double-click Multimedia .
  3. In Windows XP and Windows Me, click the Plus (+ ) sign next to CD-ROM . Select the name of the CD-ROM drive.
    In Windows 98, click the CD Music tab.
  4. In Windows XP, click Action and then select Properties .
    In Windows 98 and Windows Me, click the Properties button and then select the Properties tab.
  5. If a check is in the box next to Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device , remove the check by clicking inside the box.
  6. Click OK .
  7. Restart the computer and test for music. If you still do not hear sound, see Related support .
