Error: Software Required for Communicating with the iPod is not Installed Correctly

This document pertains to HP and Compaq PCs with Win 98, ME or XP.
This document provides instructions to resolve the error message: The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software.
Follow the instructions below to resolve this issue.
  1. With the computer turned off, disconnect the iPod (if connected).
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. Double-click the iTunes icon on your desktop to reinstall iTunes. If the iTunes icon is not on the desktop, skip to step 5.
  4. After the iTunes installation is complete, restart the computer.
  5. Press and hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys on the keyboard and then press the Delete key.
    The Task Manager window will appear.
  6. Select the Process tab.
  7. Look for a process named iPodService.exe . If the name is listed, select it and then click End Process .
  8. Look for a process named iTunesHelper.exe . If the name is listed, select it and then click End Process .
  9. Close the Task Manager window.
  10. Locate and delete the file iPodService in the "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\" directory.
    1. Click Start , and then click My Computer .
    2. Double-click the C: drive, double-click the Program Files folder, double-click the iPod folder, and then double-click the bin folder.
    3. Delete the iPodService file.
  11. Locate and delete the file iTunesHelper in the "C:\Program Files\iTunes\" directory.
    1. Click Start , and then click My Computer .
    2. Double-click the C: drive, double-click the Program Files folder, and then double-click the iTunes folder.
    3. Delete the iTunesHelper file.
  12. Reinstall the iPod and iTunes software using the installation CD you received with your iPod. Do not reconnect your iPod during the installation until prompted to do so.
  13. Once the iPod is detected, click OK to continue with the installation.
Do not restart the computer until the InstallShield Wizard is complete and it prompts you to restart the computer.
After the computer restarts, it may take a minute or more for the iPod to be recognized. If you start iTunes and the iPod is not detected, do the following:
  1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod.
  2. Start iTunes, and then reconnect the iPod.
Your iPod should now be detected and usable in iTunes.
NOTE:If the error continues after using the steps in this document, download and install the latest version of iTunes from Apple's Website . If the error still persists in the newer version of iTunes, use System Restore to restore system files and settings to a date when the iPod was working properly and then download and install the latest version of iTunes.
