Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.
This error is most commonly caused by a damaged or corrupted installation file. This can occur if you are trying to install from the CD or from a downloaded file. Follow these steps to download the latest software from the HP Web site, instead of installing from the CD, and then check for other issues that can cause the error before reinstalling the software.

Step one: Download the latest software

Important: Do not install the software yet. Rather, download and save it, and make a note of where you save it on your computer.
NOTE:You can also order a new CD from the HP website if you would prefer not to download and install the software.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
