Support details

There are many reasons for preforming a system recovery to return the computer to its original condition. A system recovery may be necessary if the operating system is damaged, or the hard drive is corrupted, or the computer is infected by a virus.
Performing a recovery removes all software and files saved to the hard drive, reinstalls the original operating system, and then performs an initial setup of the default programs.
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs are configured with a recovery manager or recovery media that enables you to repair or reinstall the original operating system. Depending on the model of the notebook PC, there may be a recovery CD or DVD included, or your model may have the Recovery Manager tool to create a personal recovery disc. You can also order a replacement recovery disc from HP.

Frequently asked questions
Recovering a computer to its original operating condition can be a confusing and frustrating task. There are different options available, based on the operating system, the model of the computer, and when it was produced. For answers to many questions about how to get started, see HP Notebook PCs - Recovering a Computer to Original Operating Condition FAQ .
Before performing a system recovery
During the recovery process, all personal data and software that is installed on the computer is deleted. Before beginning the recovery process, HP recommends that you make a backup copy of all personal data. For information on creating a backup copy of your data see Microsoft's Backup Basics (in English).
Performing a Windows System Restore
If your computer suddenly develops a problem, you should perform a Windows System Restore to try to resolve the issue before you perform a complete recovery with the HP Recovery Manager. Windows System Restore returns the computer to a previous restore point, which resets all of the settings for the operating system to those settings that existed at the time that the restore point was created. None of your personal data files, such as email, documents, or pictures are lost.
Windows System Restore is a Microsoft program and should not be confused with HP Recovery Manager. See HP Notebook PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore .
After performing a system recovery
After performing a system recovery, you must reinstall and update all of your software and drivers, and reestablish the Internet connection. Use the original manufacturer's disc to install your software programs, and then go to the manufacturer's web sites to download and install all updates. See HP Notebook PCs - Things To Do After Performing a System Recovery in Windows Vista or Windows 7 .
Solving common recovery errors
Performing a recovery can be a complicated task. The single most common cause of recovery errors is the user interrupting the process or turning off the computer before the recovery and setup is complete. For additional recovery issues see HP Notebook PCs - System Recovery May Fail or Display Error Message .
