Configuring the Multimedia and Internet Keyboard Buttons in Microsoft Windows 98, Me, and XP

This document applies to Microsoft Windows 98, Me, and XP.
This document illustrates the features of your Compaq Presario Internet keyboard and explains how to configure the multimedia and Internet buttons to open the programs and Web sites that you choose.
Keyboard layouts and the steps for configuring keyboard buttons may differ depending on the specific model of your computer. For specific information about your keyboard and keyboard software refer to the Getting Started Guide that came with your Compaq Presario. Getting Started Guides are available for download on the Compaq Manuals and Documentation Web page .

Configuring Internet and shortcut buttons

NOTE: Before you can configure the buttons you may need to download and install the latest keyboard driver and software. Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads to search for updated keyboard software for your model.
Use one of the following methods to configure your Internet Keyboard buttons to open the programs and Web sites you choose.

Configuring Internet and shortcut buttons

NOTE: Before you can configure the buttons you may need to download and install the latest keyboard driver and software. Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads to search for updated keyboard software for your model.
  1. Click the Start button from the Windows taskbar.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. In Microsoft Windows XP, click Printers and Other Hardware.
  4. Double-click Easy Access buttons. The Easy Access Buttons dialog box appears. If the Easy Access Buttons icon is not listed use Method 2 below.

  5. Select the icon from the list that corresponds with the button you wish to configure.
  6. Change the name of the button by typing in the Button Name dialog box.
  7. Enter the desired Web page URL in the Button Assignment dialog box or click Browse to select a program or file from your hard drive (for example, HTTP://www.hp.com or C:\Program Files\AOL\aol.exe).
  8. Click OK to finish configuring the keyboard buttons.

Method 1: Use the Easy Access Software

  1. Click the Start button from the Windows taskbar.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Printers and Other Hardware.
  4. Double-click Easy Access Buttons. The Easy Access Buttons dialog box appears. If the Easy Access Buttons icon is not listed, use Method 2 below.

  5. Select the icon from the list that corresponds with the button you wish to configure.
  6. Change the name of the button by typing in the Button Name dialog box.
  7. Enter the desired Web page URL in the Button Assignment dialog box or click Browse to select a program or file from your hard drive.
  8. Click OK to finish configuring the keyboard buttons.

Method 2: Use the Keyboard Properties Window

  1. Click Start and then Control Panel.
  2. Click Printers and Other Hardware.
  3. Click Keyboard.
    The Keyboard Properties window appears (see Figure: Keyboard Properties window, Buttons tab).
  4. Click the Buttons tab. You will see a list of Internet and shortcut buttons.

  5. Double-click the button you want to configure, such as Connect.
    The button's configuration window appears (see Figure: Connect button's configuration window).
    NOTE: The CONNECT button is automatically configured to the default Web browser, such as America Online (AOL). The CONNECT button on the keyboard cannot be configured to open or launch a specific program, just specific Web pages. To change the default Web browser, refer to the help guide within the Web browser program.

  6. Configure the button to launch a Web site or a program file. The figure and table below explain how to use each field in the configuration window.
  7. After you have made your changes to the button's configuration, click OK.
  8. On the Keyboard properties window, click Apply.
  9. Repeat the previous Steps, 5 – 8, for each button you want to configure.
    NOTE: Shortcut buttons will only allow you to select a file or program. You cannot configure shortcut buttons to open Web pages.
  10. After you have configured the buttons, click OK on the Keyboard Properties window.

1. Choose a button capability This field allows you to choose what the button does. For Internet buttons, choices include:

Default - Opens the default Web page or program file

Simple Web page with label – Allows you to enter a Web address of your choice; click the Favorites button if you want to enter a Web site from your favorites folder.

Simple local file with label - Allows you to select a program or other file to open; click the Browse button to locate the file.

Complex remote page with label - Allows you to enter a Web address of your choice; click the Favorites button if you want to enter a Web site from your favorites folder.
2. Display label This field contains the text that will display on the screen when you push the button.
3. Address This field is where you enter the Web address or file name you want to open.
