Connecting to a 3G WWAN network with Connection Manager 3.x
Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) is a wireless connection to the Internet that is achieved with the use of cellular technology. WWAN is different from Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) because it offers a wider range of connectivity to the Internet and uses different hardware. With WWAN, you can browse the Internet, check your e-mail, and connect to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) from anywhere within the regional boundaries of your cellular provider. Cellular providers, such as AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, offer WWAN service for a monthly fee.
To use your WWAN-capable notebook, you will need:
|WWAN service plan purchased from a cellular provider||Contact your cellular provider to find out more about their WWAN plans and monthly rates.|
|Sim card (for AT&T and Sprint customers only)||There are special S cards and cellular provider packages that are needed for international customers.|
|HP Connection Manager program||If your cellular provider has a proprietary connection utilities to connect to the WWAN, please disregard this document and follow the instructions from your cellular provider.|

When setting up your WWAN, you will:
- Verify that your notebook is WWAN-capableA WWAN-capable notebook needs a WWAN card (Mobile Broadband Module). If you have AT&T or Sprint, you will also need an S card. There are two ways you can figure out if you notebook is WWAN capable: you can physically locate the cards beneath your notebook, or you can use the Device Manager.
You can use the Device Manager to verify that your computer's WWAN card is recognized by the computer. Device Manager will also indicate if there is a problem with your WWAN card.To use Device Manager, follow the steps below.Now that you have verified that your notebook is WWAN-capable, you can proceed with turning on the WWAN card.
- Click Start > Control Panel, then double-click Device Manager when the Control Panel opens.
- You can locate your WWAN Mobile Broadband Module such as the HP un2400 Mobile Broadband Module in the following three device categories: Modems, Network Adapters and Ports.The WWAN card allows WWAN capabilities on your notebook.
- If you see a yellow exclamation point icon (!) next to the WWAN card in the Device Manager, this indicates that there is a problem with the driver. Most of the time, downloading the latest updates for your driver will resolve the problem.To download the latest updates for your WWAN driver, see the HP Support web site .NOTE:If the WWAN card is not listed in Device Manager, make sure that the notebook battery is connected. Just having your notebook connected to the AC Power Adapter cannot replace the battery in this case.
- Turn your WWAN card on/offUse the HP Connection Manager 3.0 to turn the WWAN card on or off when you want to connect to the web. Some cellular providers will provide their own customized connection utilities. It is important that you always use the same connection program to turn the WWAN on and off to avoid conflicts.If you do not have the latest version of HP Connection Manager, you can download HP Connection Manager 3.0 or higher . You must have a WWAN-capable computer to install HP Connection Manager.To conserve battery power, turn the card off when you are not using a WWAN connection. To turn on the WWAN, follow the steps below.
Now that you have turned on your WWAN card, you are ready to configure your WWAN card with your cellular provider.
- To open HP Connection Manager 3.0, click Start > Programs > HP > HP Connection Manager.
- Click the Power icon.When the WWAN is on, the power icon is green.
- To turn off the WWAN, click the Power button.When the WWAN is turned off, the power icon is red.
- Configure your WWAN card with your cellular providerBefore you can use your WWAN card, you must configure it to recognize your cellular provider. HP recommends using HP Connection Manager 3.0. If your cellular provider recommends a different connection manager program, you should use that program.The HP Connection Manager provides steps for Connecting to a listed cellular provider. If your provider is not in the list of known providers, see section titled Create a profile and connect to an unlisted cellular provider on this page.To open HP Connection Manager 3.0, click Start > Programs > HP > HP Connection Manager.
To configure your WWAN card and connect to a listed cellular provider, open the HP Connection Manager and follow the steps below.You should now be connected to your cellular provider using WWAN. If you cannot connect to your cellular provider, continue to the next section titled Create a profile and connect to an unlisted cellular provider or contact your cellular provider for further assistance.If you are connecting to a cellular provider that is not listed, you will need to enter some extra configuration information to create a profile. To create the profile, you will enter your cellular provider's name, a login user name and password, an Access Point Name (APN), and the IP address (if HP Connection Manager cannot locate it automatically).To configure your WWAN card and connect to an unlisted cellular provider, open the HP Connection Manager and follow the steps below.You should now be connected to your cellular provider using WWAN. If you cannot connect to your cellular provider, see section titled Troubleshooting the WWAN signal on this page or contact your cellular provider for further assistance.
- In the HP Connection Manager main window, click the Application Settings icon.The Application Settings window opens.
- Click the Mobile Broadband tab, click Select Provider to display the list of cellular providers.
- Select your cellular provider from the list, and then click Next.Since you have chosen a listed provider, the connection manager already has a profile that contains the cellular provider's name, a user name, password, and IP addresses.
- Select your preferred Activation Method, and then click Next:
- Online Self Activation allows you to set up your account and activate your notebook through your cellular provider's website.
- One Touch Automatic Provisioning allows you to activate an account already set up.
- Manual allows you to enter your cellular provider's information if you have the Activation Code, Mobile Directory Number (MDN), and Mobile Station Identification (MSID or MIN). You can also obtain this information by calling your cellular provider.
- Click Connection settings and verify that Auto is selected for Roaming and Data Network.
- Click General Settings and select Power off on exit and Power on upon launch.
- Click Close to save your settings.You are returned to the main screen, and the Activate option has changed to Connect.
- Click the Connect button to connect to your cellular provider.
- On the HP Connection Manager main window, click the Application Settings icon.The Application Settings window opens.
- On the Mobile Broadband tab, click Select Provider to display the list of listed cellular providers.
- Click Other Provider.
- Click Profile, and then click Add to create a new cellular provider profile.Enter the information received from your provider: Connection Name (name of the cellular provider), User Name, Password, and APN (Access Point Name).
- Click the Advanced pane to verify that the default Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically options are selected.If your cellular provider has provided information for a different IP address or DNS server address, select the Use the following IP address and Use the following DNS server address options, and enter that information manually into each field.
- Click Finish to save your settings in the profile.
- Click the Connection settings pane to verify that the Roaming and Data Network options are set to the default Auto value. Auto Roaming and Data Network aid consumers who move or travel often with their notebooks using WWAN.
- Click the General Settings pane to verify that the default Power off on exit and Power on upon launch options are selected.
- Click Close to save your settings.
- Connect to your WWAN on a daily basis using HP Connection ManagerOnce you have configured your WWAN card for the cellular provider, you can connect to your WWAN by clicking the HP Connection Manager Power icon to turn your WWAN card on and off. Verify that you have at least 2 or 3 signal strength bars to ensure a strong enough signal to connect to the Internet.If you are unable to connect, see section titled Troubleshooting the WWAN signal on this page or contact your cellular provider for further assistance.
Troubleshooting the WWAN signal
If you are experiencing low signal strength or there is no WWAN signal, and you are not in an interior room, you should do the following:
- Make sure HP Connection Manager’s provider settings has the correct provider selected. This information is displayed in HP Connection Manager.If you have the wrong provider, click the Mobile Broadband tab, Provider settings, and then click Select Provider. Choose your current cellular provider from the list of providers.
- After selecting your cellular provider, wait for the device to re-load the new Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) firmware.See the section titled Create a profile and connect to an unlisted cellular provider on this page.
- For Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks such as AT&T and Sprint, make sure an activated S card is inserted in the notebook. You should obtain an activated S card from your cellular provider when you purchase a WWAN plan.A non-activated S card will not show any network signal strength status.
If the signal strength is still low, check with your cellular provider to verify that there are no antenna or profile issues.
The following provides responses to several of the frequently asked questions concerning the WWAN service.
Is there more than one WWAN card that will work?
Only the Qualcomm Gobi WWAN hardware module works across all platforms.
What US carriers are supported?
The WWAN card supports AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and several other US carriers.
Can I replace my WWAN card?
The WWAN card is not customer replaceable on all units. Refer to your User Guide to determine your replacement and repair options.
Are S cards required?
S cards are only required for AT&T and for Sprint. The S card is inserted under the battery. S cards are installed at the factory for mainstream platforms. Models sold exclusively from telephone company vendors may not have S cards if they are not required.
How do I know what hardware is available?
Some units may have S card slots, but no WWAN card. Therefore, it is important to verify computer specifications in your User Guide or in Device Manager before assuming there is an issue with WWAN.
Can I upgrade any computer to support WWAN?
Not all units of every model are upgradable to support WWAN. For example, a newer unit of a specific model may support WWAN, but an earlier unit of the same model may not have a WWAN card slot, WWAN antenna, or S slot installed in the unit.
What software do I use to set up my WWAN?
HP Connection Manager is the primary software used to set up, connect, and provide the status on your WWAN connection. Certain cellular providers may be restricted to using only their specific software.
Is Connection Manager the same as Network and Sharing Center?
No. Network and Sharing Center will let you turn on/off WLAN, Bluetooth, and WWAN connections, but HP Connection Manager assists you in activating and setting up your WWAN Mobile Broadband connection in addition to turning your WWAN on/off.
How do I know my WWAN card is turned on?
Network and Sharing Center provides the status of WLAN, Bluetooth, and WWAN cards. You can use Network and Sharing Center to turn these on or off individually; however, HP recommends that you use HP Connection Manager for turning the WWAN card on or off.
It is important that whichever method you use to turn on the devices, use the same method to turn it off. Using a different program or method to turn it off will not work.
