Locating the serial number and model number
Model number
This may be found on a sticker on the bottom of the drive or on the back of the external drives (See Figure 1 for an example, the appearance of this sticker will vary with drive models). On the drive sticker label, the model number is printed at the top of the label. In the example below, the model number is HP C4380-XXXXX. The C4380 is all that is needed for a technical support agent to determine the model. Using the links to the drive series below, you can use the model number to verify the exact model for the drive.
Serial number
The serial number cannot be used to determine the model of the drive, but may be needed to verify the warranty status of the drive if additional support from HP is required.
Internal models
  1. The sticker on the top of the unit, underneath the second bar code, contains the serial number, beginning with HP S/N (see Figure 1, the appearance of this sticker will vary with drive models).
    Figure 1: Drive sticker
  2. Pressing the EJECT button will bring the drive tray out of the unit. On the underside of this tray, a white sticker, containing the serial number and the model number, can be located (see Figure 2). This sticker is not present on all drives.

External models
  1. The sticker on the back of the unit, usually above the power cable’s connection, contains the serial number.
  2. Pressing the EJECT button will bring the drive tray out of the unit. On the underside of this tray, a white sticker, also containing the serial number, can be located. This sticker is not present on all models.
Documents for drive series identification
The faceplate of most models will list the drive series. The links below will take you to the series information for your drive.
NOTE: Multiple sub-series may be included in each of the general series documents below. For example, if the faceplate on the drive says 8000 series , 8100 series or 8200 series , you need to link to the 8000 Series Internal and External Drive Identification document.
The CD series includes internal IDE models and an external Universal Serial Bus (USB) model.
The M820e external PCMCIA model connects to a laptop PC through a PCMCIA port or to a desktop PC through an external SCSI port.
The 9000 series includes internal IDE, internal SCSI and external SCSI models.
The 8000 series includes both internal IDE and external Universal Serial Bus (USB) drives.
NOTE: The 8000 Series Internal and External Drive Identification document does not apply to CD-Writers that shipped with the Pavilion computers. Use the Identify your Preinstalled CD-Writer Plus drive, Information Only link below for assistance in identifying your drive.
The 7000 series include both internal IDE, and external parallel port drives.
The 4020 drives were internal SCSI drives and the 6020 drives were internal SCSI, external SCSI or external SCSI to parallel port drives.
HP CD-Writer plus drives that are preinstalled in Pavilion systems, come in different versions. This document links to the Pavilion support site.
Additional information
Not all drives will need a firmware upgrade. Information on what drives have upgradeable firmware and links to those upgrades are provided.
All supported operating systems for the CD-Writer drives are listed. Some drives may require software or firmware upgrades.
