Introduction
The HP All-in-One products listed below have limited functionality available over a network by using either Printer Sharing or by connecting them with an HP Jetdirect print server that allows USB connection to a printer. Since full functionality is not possible, HP does not recommend connecting these products over a network.
The table below shows what functions are available over a network.

Print sharing on a network
Use Windows print sharing to print to an All-in-One product connected to another computer. If the All-in-One product is locally installed on a computer on a network (the host), other computers (remote computers) on the same network can print to it. All computers must be connected to the network and the printer must be installed on the local or host computer before setting up printer sharing.
NOTE: Printing is the only function available from the remote computer when the All-in-One product is connected in this manner.
File and Print sharing must be enabled on all computers for this to work correctly. Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP automatically enable this feature.
NOTE: File and print sharing is turned off by default when Window XP SP2 is installed.
In Windows 98 and Me, enable printer sharing by following the steps below:
NOTE: File and print sharing may leave your computer vulnerable to attack by computer viruses. You should consult with your network administrator before enabling File and Print sharing.
  1. Right-click Network Neighborhood (My Network Places in Windows Me) and then click Properties .
  2. In the installed network components area, look for "File and print sharing for Microsoft networks." If it is not listed, click the File and Print Sharing button.
  3. Click both items to select file sharing and printer sharing, and then click OK .
  4. Click OK to save the changes and exit from the properties.
  5. Follow any instruction messages that appear and then restart the computer.
If there are any problems enabling Print and File sharing, click Start , and then click Help . Select the Search tab and type Printer Sharing . Look for the topic on how to enable File and Print sharing.
NOTE: The server (host) must be set up before setting up the remote computers.
Enabling sharing for the All-in-One products
Follow the steps below to enable print sharing for the All-in-One products. In Windows 2000 and XP, you must be logged on as an administrator to make these changes.
  1. Install the All-in-One product by following the directions provided with it.
  2. After installing the All-in-One product, click Settings , and then click Printers (click Start and then Printers and Faxes in Windows XP).
  3. Right-click the printer icon for the All-in-One product and select Sharing on the menu. The Properties will appear with the Sharing tab on top.
  4. Click the option to share the printer, and then enter a unique name for the printer in the Share Name field. Write this name down exactly as it is entered because it will be required to set up the remote computers. Click OK to finish the setup.
Determining the name of the host computer
You must know the name of the host computer (the computer that the All-in-One product is connected to) to set up Print Sharing.
Windows 98 and Me
  1. On the host computer, right-click Network Neighborhood , and then click Properties .
  2. Select the Identification tab.
  3. Write down the computer name.
Windows 2000
  1. On the host computer, right-click My Computer , and then click Properties .
  2. Select the Network Identification tab.
  3. Write down the computer name.
Windows XP
  1. On the host computer, right-click My Computer , and then click Properties .
  2. Select the Computer Name tab.
  3. Write down the computer name.
Determining what setup method to use
To determine what setup method to use, you must know the Windows version of the computer connected to the all-in-one and the computer on the network that wants to share the printer. Refer to the table below to determine the type of setup to perform.

Based on the table, select one of the three methods listed below.
Setup using Windows Point-and-Print
Follow the steps below to install the All-in-One product on a remote computer using the Point and Print method:
Windows 98, Me, and 2000
  1. Open the network section of Windows:
    • Windows 98: Double-click Network Neighborhood
    • Windows Me and 2000: Double-click My Network Places .
  2. Find the name of the computer the All-in-One product is connected to and double-click it. In Windows 2000, you may have to click Computers Near Me or Entire Network to locate the computer.
  3. Double-click the name of the shared All-in-one product.
  4. A Before You Can Use the Printer message appears. Click Yes and follow the instructions to setup the printer.
Windows XP
  1. Click Start , and then click Search .
  2. In the list of search types, click A computer on the network .
  3. Type in the name of the computer the All-in-One is connected to.
  4. Click Search .
  5. When the computer is found, double-click it.
  6. Double-click the name of the shared All-in-One product.
  7. A Before You Can Use the Printer message appears. Click Yes and follow the instructions to setup the printer.
Setup Windows 98 to Windows NT
Use this method to setup a Windows 98 or Me computer to print to an All-in-One product connected to a Windows 2000 or XP computer.
NOTE: The Windows CD-ROM may be required to install the drivers.
  1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
  2. Double-click Add Printer . The Add Printer wizard will appear. Click Next .
  3. Select Network Printer , and then click Next to continue.
  4. Enter the network path of the printer. Type in two back slashes (\\), the name of the computer the All-in-One product is connected to, another back slash, and then the name of the shared printer. The line entered will look something like the following (complete with back slashes): \\hostcomputer name\shared printer name
  5. Leave MS-DOS printing set to No and then click Next .
  6. Select HP from the list of Manufacturers, and then select a printer driver based on the Alternate print driver table below. Click Next to continue.
  7. Select the LPT 1 Printer Port and then click Next .
  8. Type a name for the printer that will be easy to remember or use the existing name. If the printer is to be the default printer, select Yes . If not, select No . Click Next to continue.
  9. Select Yes to print a Test page, and then click Finish . The print driver will install. If the installation requires the Windows CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM and select the CD-ROM drive.
Setup Windows NT to Windows 98
Use this method to setup a Windows 2000 or XP computer to print to an All-in-One product connected to a Windows 98 or Me computer.
  1. Open the Printers folder:
    • Windows 2000: Click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
    • Windows XP: Click Start , and then click Printers and Faxes .
  2. Click File , and then click Server Properties .
  3. Select the Ports tab, and then click Add Port .
  4. Select Local Port , and then click New Port . Even though the printer is connected to a computer on the network, it will be considered a local printer.
  5. Enter the name of the port, type in two back slashes (\), the name of the computer the All-in-One product is connected to, another back slash, and then the name of the shared printer (as shown in the image above). The line entered will look something like this (complete with slashes): \\hostcomputer name\Share name
  6. Click OK to create the port. Close the Port window and Server Properties after the port is created.
  7. Double-click the Add Printer icon. The Add Printer wizard will appear. Click Next .
  8. Select Local Printer and remove the check mark from Automatically Detect My Printer . Even though the printer is connected to a computer on the network, it will be considered a local printer. Click Next to continue.
  9. Select the port created in Steps 2 - 6, and then click Next .
  10. Select HP from the list of Manufacturers .
  11. Select a printer driver based on the Alternate print driver table below, and then click Next .
  12. Keep the existing printer name or give it a new name that is less than 32 characters long.
  13. If the printer is to be the default printer, select Yes . If not, select No . Click Next to continue.
  14. Make sure that the option not to share the printer is selected, and then click Next .
  15. Select the option to Print a test page , and then click Next .
  16. Click Finish to install the driver and print a test page.

Setup using an HP Jetdirect print server with a USB port
Partial functionality will be possible if the All-in-One product is connected to the network using an external HP Jetdirect print server. The print server must allow connection of a USB printer. New models may have been introduced since this document was last updated, and they include the print server models listed in the table below.

An existing network is required as well as a thorough understanding of networking to set up an HP Jetdirect print server with a USB port. The HP Install Network Printer Wizard must be installed to enable installation of the All-in-One product.
Follow the steps below to install the All-in-One product with an HP Jetdirect print server:
  1. Connect the All-in-One product to the HP Jetdirect print server following the instructions that come with the print server. Connect the power to the print server last.
  2. Install the HP Install Network Printer Wizard software, either from the CD-ROM that comes with the print server or download it from HP. To download the Install Network Printer Wizard:
    2. Select Download drivers and software .
    3. Type in Install Network Printer Wizard .
    4. Click the search arrow to the right of the text entry box.
    5. Select the option to download the software.
  3. After the HP print server has been connected and turned on for more than five minutes, press the Test button on the back to print a configuration test page.
  4. Start the HP Install Network Printer Wizard software.
  5. There are two options that can be used to install the networked printer. The installer can either search for all available printers or a specific printer can be selected using the address of the print server. Select the option to Specify a printer by address , since the address of the print server is known (from the configuration test page), then click Next .
  6. Enter one of the following: the host name, IP address, or hardware address of the print server. This information is printed on the configuration test page printout. Click Next to continue for either method.
  7. The HP Install Network Printer Wizard will analyze the configuration. Select Next on the window that follows to continue.
  8. Select and install a print driver based on the Alternate print driver table below.
  9. Review the printer name and change it if desired. Select Next to continue.
  10. Review the setup information. Make sure that Print a test page is selected, then click Finish if the information is correct. The print path will be created and the print driver installed.
Scanning using the embedded Web server
NOTE: Limited scanning functionality is possible using the embedded Web server. For assistance with installing or scanning, please contact an HP Jetdirect support agent.
  1. Open an Internet browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
  2. Type the IP address of the print server, as taken from the configuration test page, into the address line of the browser and then press the Enter key. The first time this is done a request to load a java script plug-in will appear. This plug-in is required.
    NOTE: Java must be installed on the computer. If you are using Windows XP, it may be necessary to obtain Java by downloading it from the Internet.
  3. The embedded Web server will appear. Select the Scan option to reveal the scanning portion of the software.
  4. A preview of the scan can be performed or a final version scanned and saved to the hard drive. Select the Scan Help link on the right side of the program window to access assistance with scanning. It may be necessary to change the image format to view or save scans depending on the capabilities of the browser.

Alternate print driver table
Use the alternate print drivers below to establish printing for the client (networked) computer. For example, to print to a PSC 950xi All-in-One product in Windows 98 that is connected to another computer, use the HP Deskjet 870c printer driver.
