Using Bluetooth Devices (Windows XP)
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows XP.
Some HP notebooks are sold with built-in Bluetooth wireless capabilities. The Bluetooth notebook adapter makes short-range radio connections to a wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) and can access other Bluetooth-compatible devices, such as other computers, cell phones, audio headsets, a mouse, and printers.
Since the Bluetooth function connects the computer by radio rather than through cables, the devices can be moved around and remain connected to the computer. Bluetooth devices can automatically connect to the computer when they enter the computer's service area. The typical service area for computers or cell phones is about 30 feet (9 meters); however, it is only about 3 feet (1 meter) for a headset or keyboard.
Some of the common Bluetooth problems will display an error message. You can search the Microsoft and HP web sites using the exact message for information on the causes and solutions.
To establish a connection and transfer a file between two Bluetooth-enabled computers or between a mobile device, such as a cell phone, MP3 player, or PDA and a computer, you should:
Verify the computer has a Bluetooth device
The Bluetooth icon may display in the system tray even if the computer does not have a Bluetooth device. The product specification documents that came with the computer specify if your computer does or does not have a Bluetooth device.
This document only applies to HP computers that have installed:
- Windows XP Service Pack 2 or greater.
- HP Bluetooth drivers.
This document does not support Windows Bluetooth without these XP updates.
If your computer does not have a Bluetooth device, you can hide the Bluetooth icon.
The HP Wireless Assistant can also be used to Verify the device is installed and enabled . The HP Wireless Assistant only lists wireless devices that are installed on the computer.
To hide, or show, the Bluetooth icon, do the following:
- Click Start, Control Panel, and then right-click the Bluetooth icon and select Open the Bluetooth Devices window.
- On the Options tab, uncheck the Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area option, click Apply, and then OK.
The Bluetooth icon no longer displays in the system tray.
Verify the device is turned on
Most notebooks have a switch or button on the case that sends power to the Bluetooth and wireless network devices. An indicator light glows blue when the Bluetooth or WiFi communication devices are turned on. The light glows amber when power to the device is turned off. The indicator light does not glow at all when power to the device is turned off. The HP Wireless Assistant software must be used to enable or disable the individual wireless functions.
- Turning off the Bluetooth switch or button ends any device connection that has been opened.
- Putting the computer into hibernation also turns off the Bluetooth function.
Verify the device is installed and enabled with HP Network Assistant
The HP Wireless Assistant allows you to verify that a Bluetooth device is installed and to check the status of the wireless devices on the computer. To enable the Bluetooth device, do the following:
- Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click HP Wireless Assistant.
- By default, the Status column shows that both of the wireless devices are either on (enabled) or off (disabled). Also, by default, the Action column does not display.If you want to control one of the wireless devices individually, without affecting the other devices, click Properties, and then select the Independent controls for installed wireless devices option.
If you have removed the HP Wireless Assistant, it can be reinstalled using the Recovery Manager service.
- Click Start, and then select HP Backup and Recovery Manager.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Software program re-installation, and then click Next.
- When prompted, click Next.
- Select HP Wireless Assistant, and then click Next.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation of the HP Wireless Assistant.
Configure the computer as a host
To configure the computer as a host, you must set it up to broadcast its signal so that other Bluetooth devices can find and pair with it. After the host computer is successfully paired with the desired Bluetooth device, you should return to the Bluetooth Configuration screen and turn broadcasting off to keep your computer secure.
Before using the computer to access other Bluetooth devices, some basic settings should be configured. The configuration will allow the computer to act as a host and enable it to connect to other devices. Once you verify the Bluetooth switch is turned on and the device is enabled, do the following:
- Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar and select Advanced Configuration.
- On the General tab, check the following settings:
- Give the computer a unique name that will identify it to other Bluetooth users.
- Set the computer type to Laptop.
- On the Accessibility tab, select the Let other Bluetooth devices discover this computer option.NOTE:You should deselect this option after you have paired the computer to the desired Bluetooth device so that it cannot be seen by other users to ensure the security of your computer.
- Select the allow Only devices listed below option, and then click Add Device to view and select your Bluetooth devices.
- Click OK to accept the settings and close the window.
Understanding protocols for sending or receiving files
Most computers with Bluetooth wireless capabilities support the following common protocols for transferring data. To use either protocol, both devices must support the same protocol (check the other device's Bluetooth documentation). Also, for security, during the transfer of files, the Bluetooth devices will prompt you to enter a passkey or pairing code so the devices can recognize each other.
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP): Files can be copied into and out of shared directories (folders) by both computers. This service is equivalent to common network file sharing. To configure FTP to share files, do the following actions:
- Double-click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar.
- In My Bluetooth Places, select and open Other Device to view files in its shared directory.
- Use Windows Explorer or other software to copy or move files between the computer and other device.
- Object Push Profile (OPP): Both computers can send certain types of Microsoft Outlook data to the other computer's Bluetooth inbox, but cannot retrieve files from the other computer. TO configure OPP to share Outlook data, do the following actions:
- Double-click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar.
- In My Bluetooth Places, select and open Other Device.
- To send a calendar item, note, or message, right-click the device's Inbox and select the desired option, then select the file to send. The file arrives in the device's inbox directory. To send a business card, right-click the device's Inbox and select the option to send the business card.
Transfer a file from the host computer to another device
After the computer has been configured as a host and is set to be discovered by another device, you can transfer a file by using the Windows Explorer. Both devices, the host computer and the mobile device, must have Bluetooth turned on. Remember that during the transfer, you will be prompted to enter a passkey or pairing code so the devices can recognize each other. You will need to enter the same pairing code into both devices within 10 to 15 seconds.
With both of the Bluetooth devices physically located near each other so you can enter information, do the following:
- On the requesting computer, right-click the file you want to transfer, select Send To, Bluetooth, and then select the desired Bluetooth device.
- On the receiving computer, when prompted that A Bluetooth device is requesting to connect to your computer, click the prompt and follow the instructions to either let the devices generate a pairing code, or you can make up a unique code.
- Enter the pairing code in the receiving computer and click Enter or Next (depending on the version of Bluetooth used).
- When a prompt displays on the requesting device, enter the same pairing code, and click Enter or Next.
When the devices recognize each other, the file transfer begins.
Now that the devices recognize each other, it is easier to transfer a file:
- When prompted by the receiving device for a pairing code, select one of the options to either:
- Prompt for a pairing code every time.
- Automatically accept the existing pairing code.
Connect to a Bluetooth printer or serial device
- Select Explore My Bluetooth Places from the menu.
- Select View Devices in Range.
- Select Search for Devices in Range.
- Select the printer.
- Select OK at the prompt to install the printer. The notebook searches for the printer driver. The Add printer Wizard opens.
- If the printer is listed on the model list, select the printer model number, and then select OK.
- If the printer is not listed, select Have Disk. Insert the software CD included with the printer, browse to the driver file for the language you want, select Open, and then select OK. Then select OK again. The printer driver is installed, and the printer Properties dialog box is displayed.
- Select OK.
Configure the Bluetooth audio
To configure the Bluetooth audio, you must set it up to broadcast its signal so that other Bluetooth devices can find and pair with it. After the host computer is successfully paired with the desired Bluetooth device, you should return and turn broadcasting off to keep your computer secure.
- Turn on the Bluetooth headset.
- Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar and select the Open Bluetooth Settings option.
- On the Audio tab, select the desired Bluetooth device and click Connect.
- Start the desired audio playback application.Sound should now be audible through the Bluetooth headset.Depending on the particular headset model, a Properties window may be available to enable advanced features.See the manufacturer's instructions for more information.
Troubleshoot Bluetooth audio problems
If the audio application was playing before you connected the headset, the headset may not work. Try stopping and restarting the playback application. Sound should be audible through the headset after restarting the playback application.
If you move out of the reception area for the headset or turn it off, an error message may display.
If such an error message occurs, go through the startup and connection again.
