Important Security Information - Please Read This First
As part of the HP repair process, your computer may have been re-imaged. This means the software on your computer may have been restored to the factory original configuration. If you see the Microsoft screen notice on initial boot-up, your drive was likely restored to the original factory configuration. This process most likely has removed any software or driver updates you may have installed.
In this "like-new" software condition, the computer may be susceptible to viruses. To help protect your computer from harm, please follow the steps listed below. This is particularly important prior to connecting to the Internet, when your Computer is most at risk.
HP recommends enabling the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), which is a feature of Microsoft Windows XP. In order to help protect your computer, please follow these instructions to download and install all available Microsoft Critical Updates using the Windows Update feature on your computer. This feature should be set to automatically download critical updates when connected to the Internet and should notify you when the updates are ready to be installed.
Step 1: Preparing your computer
  1. Unplug the telephone and network cables from the computer.
  2. If the software had been restored, you see the Microsoft set up screens when the computer is started. Please complete the initial setup wizard screens.
  3. A screen titled "Ready to register with Microsoft" appears. Please select "No, not at this time", since this step connects the computer to the internet.
  4. If you are setting up a dial-up Internet connection, do so at this point; however do not connect/log-on to the Internet.
NOTE: HP recommends you complete the following steps whether or not your computer has been re-imaged. Computer viruses can strike any time you are connected to the Internet. Completing the steps below minimizes exposure and enables you to update your computer.
Step 2: If you are an AOL user
If you are an AOL user, skip Steps 3 and 4 and go to Step 5 .
Step 3: Enabling the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)
  1. Click Start , Control Panel , Network & Internet Connections , and Network Connections .
  2. Select the Dial-up or LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect.
  3. Double-click on your Internet connection.
  4. Select Properties , then Advanced .
  5. Select Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer...
  6. Click on the OK button.
Step 4: Close any open Windows
Close any open windows to return to the Windows desktop.
NOTE: At this point in the process, if the dial-up connection is not present, it may not be set up. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if you are having difficulty setting up your Internet connection service. Some providers such as AOL have built-in filters/firewalls.For more than one connection, you must enable the firewall with each connection; enabling one does not help protect all connections.
Step 5: Download Microsoft critical updates for Windows XP using the Windows Update tool
  1. Reconnect the telephone and/or network cables.
  2. Connect to the Internet and download all of the latest critical updates for MicroSoft Windows XP using the Windows Update tool.
  3. On your computer select Start , Help & Support , and the Windows Update link.
Step 6: Update your anti-virus software
While connected to the Internet, open your anti-virus software and update the virus definitions following the instructions given on-screen.
Step 7: Obtain updates and restart the computer
When you have downloaded and installed the Windows Critical Updates and have updated your anti-virus software, restart the computer.
Once the restart is complete, please run a full scan of your system with your anti-virus software.
