Automatically Clean the Hard Drive Every Day or Each Week in Windows XP

This document pertains to PCs with Windows XP.
Use Microsoft Scheduled Tasks Wizard to run the disk cleanup wizard automatically when it is most convenient. Perform the following steps to routinely clean temporary files from the PC:
  1. Click Start , Run , and type the following into the open field: cleanmgr /sageset:100
  2. Select the types of files that you want removed (for example, temporary files, temporary Internet files, and the files in the recycle bin).
  3. Click OK to save the settings
  4. Click Start , All Programs , Accessories , System Tools , and then Scheduled Tasks .
  5. Double-click Add Schedule Task and click Next .
  6. Select Disk Cleanup from the list and click Next .
  7. Type a name for the task, select how the task will occur, and click Next .
  8. Select the time and reoccurence if available, and click Next .
    Disk cleanup can take a long time, so select a time when the PC is on but not being used.
  9. Enter your login name and password and click Next .
    If you do not have a password, just leave the password fields blank and click Next .
  10. Select Open advanced properties for this task... and click Finish .
  11. In the Run field on the Disk Cleanup window type /sagerun:100 at the end of the path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\cleanmgr.exe /sagerun:100
  12. Click OK and verify your password again if a window appears.
    Disk Cleanup will occur at the times you have set.
