Cleaning up Unused Desktop Icons in Windows XP

Unwanted desktop icons can clutter your desktop and slow system performance.
To remove unwanted desktop icons, perform the following steps:
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Appearances and Themes > Display . The Display Properties dialog box displays.
  2. Select the Desktop folder tab, then click the Customize Desktop button.
  3. Click the Clean Desktop Now button, then click Next .
  4. A list of icons displays. Select the shortcuts that you want to remove. Click to clear the corresponding check box for any icons that you want to keep. Click Next , then Next again to confirm your deletions.
