This document only pertains to HP desktop PCs with the following PC case:
Before you begin
  • You will need a flat-bladed screwdriver.
  • Turn off the PC, disconnect all cables and transfer the PC to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the PC.
WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
CAUTION: This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.
Removing the front cover
To replace the power switch, the CD/DVD drives, the front I/O panel, the hard drive, or the memory card reader, the front outer cover must be removed.
WARNING: Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Step 1. With all cables disconnected from the PC, remove both side panels.

The front cover is held to the PC by four tabs at the bottom of the front cover...
...and four tabs at the top of the front cover.

The tabs on the front cover fit into four matching slots on the lower side of the PC...
... and four matching slots on the top of the PC.
Step 2. Press the release button to release the front cover.
Step 3. Push the four tabs on the sides of the front cover through the slots on the sides of the PC.

CAUTION: Be careful to not bend or break the tabs on the sides of the front cover. Keep a hand on the front cover to prevent it from falling free.
Step 4. Remove the front cover off of the PC.
Replacing the front cover
Step 1. Align the eight tabs on the front cover ...
... with the four slots on the top of the PC...
... and the four slots on the lower sides of the PC.
Step 2. Press the button on the side of the PC.
Step 3. Snap the front cover into position.
