Support details

This document pertains to HP and Compaq Desktop PCs with Windows 7, Vista and XP.
An error appears that contains a filename ending with msi. The error can appear while Windows is starting up or when a particular software application is opened. Error examples (your error may appear slightly different but still involves a filename that ends with msi):
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in the box below.
    or
'HPProductAssistant' the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Figure 1: Example of an MSI error
    Figure 2: Example #2
After clicking OK, another error message appears:
  • The path 'c:hp\tmp\src\aio\Setup\TrayApp.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp.
These types of errors happen because installation of a software application has not completed or a software application is attempting to repair itself because a file is missing or a registry entry was removed.
To correct these errors, if you have an installation disc that is associated with the msi file, insert the disc and click OK. If the error persists, you can search for and browse to the file on your hard drive or reinstall the entire software package.
Common msi files and their associated software applications that come with HP and Compaq products:
  • aiosoftware.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
  • documentviewer.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
  • ezarc.msi - Sonic MyDVD
  • HpSdpAppCoreApp.msi - HP Easy Internet Signup
  • hpproductassistant.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
  • mydvd.msi - Sonic MyDVD
  • Photogallery.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
  • TrayApp.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
NOTE: You should not attempt to replace only the msi file. Instead, you should reinstall the entire software package that is associated with the msi file. That is, if the error is associated with printer or camera software, reinstall the printer or camera software to re-associate all of the links to the files. HP software applications can be downloaded from the Customer Care web site or through an application recovery process if the software originally came with the computer.
For msi files associated with HP Digital Imaging software (HP Image Zone), insert the installation disc that came from the last HP printer, camera, or scanner that was installed into the top CD/DVD drive. If the disc is not available, you can download the installation software for the HP printer, scanner or camera from HP's Website, uninstall its current version from Add/Remove Programs, and then install the version that was downloaded from the Web.
For all other MSI errors, uninstall and reinstall the software associated with the msi file. For software that came with your HP or Compaq PC, like Sonic MyDVD, you can reinstall the software using Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers in Windows 7 , HP Recovery Manager (Windows Vista) , or HP application recovery process (Windows XP) .
To help prevent these errors from occuring, make sure that registry cleaning utilities and spyware removal utilities do not remove files and registry entries associated with HP software. Instead, if you want to remove a particular HP software title, properly uninstall it using add/remove programs.
If errors persist, you may be able to clean up the msi registry entries associated with the software installation by using Microsoft's Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (in English).
