Recover Windows XP Operating System Using XP Operating System Discs (2001 to 2005)

  • PrintPrint
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs delivered with a Windows XP recovery CD.
Prior to 2006, several different tools and processes have been provided for recovering HP and Compaq Notebook PCs to their original operating condition
Performing a recovery removes all software and files saved to the hard drive, reinstalls the original operating system, and then performs an initial setup of the original programs
. For all other notebooks originally configured with XP or any other operating system, to verify that you are using the proper recovery procedure, see Overview of Recovering the OS or Reinstalling the Operating System .
See FAQ On Repairing Or Reinstalling The Operating System for answers to frequently asked questions.

See HP PCs - Looking for HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive? for replacement media.
Most HP and Compaq notebook PCs manufactured between 2001 and 2005 are shipped with an Operating System Disc (OSD) that contains a full version of the Windows XP operating system. Depending on the notebook model, the disc may be a CD or a DVD. This disc is useful when your notebook PC has software problems that require the operating system to be repaired or reinstalled. Follow the steps in this document to repair or reinstall Windows XP if necessary.
If the notebook was delivered with a XP Operating System Disc, and you have that disc, use the instruction in this document. If you no longer have the disc, you should order a replacement XP Operating System Disc, and then continue with the instruction in this document.
After you insert the Windows XP Operating System Disc into the computer, a menu is displayed and you can choose to either:
(R) repair problems with the OS without destroying any user files, or
(F8) continue to erase all files on the computer and reinstall a new instance of the OS.

Purchase a replacement XP Operating System Disc

HP provided operating system or recovery discs for most PCs made from 2001 to 2005, but stopped including recovery discs in 2006. If the computer is an old model and no longer supported, recovery media may no longer be available for your model. HP has limited supply of recovery kits.
If there is problem locating or purchasing a recovery disc on the web, you can click the Contact HP link at the top of the web page, and choose a contact option to speak to a support agent and order the replacement disc. There may be a fee for the replacement discs.
