Introduction
The HP Deskjet 610C, 610CL, 612C, 630C, 632C, and 640C series printers will not print and the resume light blinks or flashes.
Instructions
Ensure the print cartridge is installed correctly. Either the black or color cartridge may be causing the error. Follow the steps below to ensure the cartridges are installed correctly.
Step 1
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the parallel or USB cable from the printer (see Figures 1 and 2).
Figure 1: Disconnecting the parallel cable from the printer
Figure 2: Disconnecting the USB cable from the printer
  3. Turn on the printer again. The power light should be steady, not flashing or blinking.
  4. Raise the printer top cover. The Resume light should flash as the print cartridge carriage moves to the center of the printer.
  5. With the printer’s top cover open, verify that both of the ink cartridges are installed.
Step 2
  1. Lower the top cover of the printer.
  2. If the Resume light stops flashing and the print cartridge carriage returns to its home position at the far-right side of the printer, the printer has properly identified the ink cartridges. Try to print a self-test by pressing and holding the RESUME button for five seconds.
  3. If the Resume light continues to flash and the print cartridge carriage does not return to the home position, the ink cartridges have not established sufficient contact and have not been properly identified by the printer.
  4. Raise the printer's top cover. The ink cartridge carriage should be located in the center position.
  5. Remove the ink cartridges.
  6. Unplug the printer from its power source.
  7. Locate the ink cartridge product number on the front of the ink cartridge. Verify that the cartridges are the correct cartridges for the printer:

Step 3
  1. Clean the ink cartridge.
    1. Use a clean, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water. Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge.
    2. Clean the copper-colored strip with the dampened swab or cloth (see Figure 4).
CAUTION: Do not touch the ink cartridge nozzle plate, where the ink comes out. Fingerprints can damage the nozzle. See Figure 3.

    3. Clean the carriage contacts on the back wall of the ink cartridge carriage with a damp, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth (see Figure 5). Use a dry, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth to remove the moisture from the contacts.

Step 4
  1. Plug the printer into a power source and turn on the printer.
  2. Place the ink cartridges into the carriage and snap them into position. You will hear a click when the ink cartridge correctly snaps into the carriage.
  3. Lower the printer's top cover.
  4. If the Resume light stops flashing and the print cartridge carriage returns to the home position at the far-right side of the printer, the printer has properly identified the ink cartridges. Print a self-test by pressing and holding the RESUME button for five seconds.
  5. If the Resume light continues to flash and the print cartridge carriage does not return to the home position, contact the HP Customer Care Center listed in the printer User's Guide. There is no charge for technical support on ink cartridges.
  6. Turn the printer off and connect the parallel or USB cable to the printer.
  7. Turn the printer on. Try printing.
NOTE: The HP Deskjet 630C and 632C printers do not require both cartridges to be installed. These printers can print with only the color (51649A) cartridge. They will not print with only the black cartridge installed. To use a black cartridge, have both cartridges installed.
